@youtwittface01 Thanks, I appreciate that. Yea, it's a question I ask not just for my videos but others that are so good and I figure that there are people who just plain evil, or jealous, or ignorant of what the video is about, and/or just dislike for the wrong reasons.
@mapexmason98 Perhaps sticking-wise, but if you close your eyes and listen it's rhythmically in sync, so it's not truly an "interpretation" because I'm tracking closely with Phil's drumming. I wouldn't know about renditions "everyone" has played because I've only heard Phil.
@HCSC0UT No problem, I admire your honesty. The audio file I'm playing to is the released version which has only one drummer: Phil. The other drummer, Chester Thompson, played live w/Phil, which allowed Phil to come out front and sing. If you listening to a recording that has both drummers, that may account for the "flamming" as as two drummers playing together rarely land on the same place of the beat.
@HCSC0UT I just listened to the song track I used and there aren't any flams on the recording. The way I play it in this video is the correct rhythm and voicings. I studied this drum pattern very intently before I played it. The only difference may be in that I used alternating strokes & I once saw Phil play this with Clapton & he used unison sticking, but these are considered "non-essentials". BTW: I am an expert on drumming having played professionally for 48 years.
I don't consider myself an expert but I believe the first bit goes like: Flam - tom 1 Flam - tom 1 Tom 1 & Tom 2 Tom 1 & Tom 2 Flam - Tom 2 Flam Tom 2 Tom 2 & floor Tom Tom 2 & floor Tom Floor Tom (count 1 and) Floor Tom (with base drums put in after every switch except last base drum)
@rune237 Your audio system doesn't pick up ghost notes as there are ghost notes through out and the flams are spread between the snare and toms which aren't really flams. This rendition would work for the song either in the studio or live as if the rhythm, the pulse is correct as the rhythm, the feel - the soul of the playing is right, these are the "essentials".
I was wondering when you'd get around to covering Phil Collins. He's not too serious about his drumming technique from what I remember him saying on various shows. I mean this in the good way.
@powergirl901 Yes, I did this 9 months ago. I want to cover Easy Lover. Phil plays with a deep groove, so whatever he lacks in technique he makes up for with his feel.
@rune237 You don't expect me to believe that do you?! Every once in awhile someone like you turns up who is, for whatever reason, not in their right mind. Either they are ignorant of drumming, jealous, or trying to pull something over on me with their b.s., or just plain evil. And they never explain "WHY" it's wrong.
@rhythmantic I wouldnt worry to much about it Sal. Your playing is out of this world. For the most part, this is why I usually dont do covers. I rather all my own stuff. This way no one can say "you played it wrong". The only thing I see Sal, that you would of done wrong, was too not play it, record it, and share it with us. Since you did, youve done everything right. :)
@williamwilbur I do the selecting in pre-production. I have most of the major drum sample software: Addictive Drums, Superior Drummer, Studio Drummer, Steven Slate Drums, BFD2, Infinite Player, Ocean Way Drums, Drum Masters2, etc. and each has it's own sound & so I choose the one that will match the song. This Nick D'Virgilio Gretsch kit, with all it's processing, was perfectly matched for this song, (Phil Collins plays Gretsch).
@williamwilbur That's nothing to LOL. I did that for the benefit of my fellow drummers, or anyone else who may be interested, to demonstrate the beat pattern that is made more clearly without the backing song track. I will do that on occasion with my covers. Purely tutorial.
I'm a newish drummer and really interested in playing this when some one asks if I can play well. Are those drums you have there lined up in order? IE: snare, high Tom, medium Tom, 3rd tom, and floor Tom?
@ZILOGz80VIDEOS By all means, do it. Let's see what those Simmons drums can do. I had the first model back in the early 1980's, those awful hexagonal shaped and hard counter top surfaces, terrible sound, almost as bad as the Syndrums. I would think today models are better all around. Yea man, as Frank Zappa once said: "whip it out!"
@rhythmantic it's not actually a syndrum set, it's that one they did with the fiber glass pad but instead of a connecting to a drum brain it has a knob in the side which connects to a sort of internal drum brain, he picked it up second hand so I'm not sure if it was modified to be like that. The electronics inside died so he replaced them with the same things he uses to convert practice pads.
@ZILOGz80VIDEOS Yes, I know the one you're referring to. I still can recall the sound they made. On Billy Cobham's first solo record, Spectrum, the Syndrum was used.
@ryannorthall I'm not playing the drum machine part at the intro if that's what you're referring to. I'm only covering the drum set part, not the drum machine part, understand? But the big drum sound is me playing. Listen to the outro where's it's just me and you'll see what I mean.
@FIFAPROSID97 That's a tough question to answer, because some days I don't practice and a lot of what I practice doesn't make its way into these covers. I've just been doing this for about 48 years and have played in 100s of bands of lots of different styles of music, both original and cover. A lot of club, road, and studio gigs too. And these days, a lot playing in church worship services.
@TheEPIICxGAMING Good for you, I hope this helped. After I did this song I saw that Phil played the fills unison-handed. So that's a tip for you, it's another way, a more economical one, to play the fills.
@madladuk1 I'm sorry, but currently there is only time to cover the song. I hope someday to do more tutorials, but it would mean putting aside the covers 'cause I can't do both. Thanks for watching.
Once again as always awesome, hey i have an idea you know that song Sister Christian by night ranger? well the drummer of that band sang it and I dont know if its your style or not but you should do that song and sing it while you play the drums
@therailwizard1994 Thanks. Yes, I know the group & the song. Well, the thing is I used to be a singing drummer and sang & drummed on all kinds of songs, so thanks for the idea. I'll have to think of the ones I used to do and cover it. Light My Fire by The Doors comes to mind as does Devil w/The Blue Dress, Slowdown & I'm A Loser by The Beatles, Jealousy by Gin Blossoms, etc.
