Andy Summers of the Police was in this band just prior to this gig. (Read AS's book "One Train Later"--Fascinating.) .....Sure would have loved to see Gong on here. Are there any videos of them from this gig?
This was the first gig me and my friend Ted went to. Kevin Coyne, Nico, Streetwalkers, Gong. We blagged our way backstage and drunk part of the rider.
Yes! I was there too and can't believe this footage exists. Someone mentioned Gong's paper plates - they had an enormous stack of them and were flipping them into the audience like frisbees.
Wow! My dad is playing on drums! What a discovery this is for me as its hard to get much out of my dad about the 'glory years'. He's a modest guy so doesnt like to harp on about stuff in the past...or he was just too stoned to remember it! Pleased to say that dad (Terry Slade) is still going strong and playing at 62.
Totally peerless. It looks like EMI/Virgin are releasing the full concert mixed from multitrack...which will be nice. Audio only, but then that's what it's about !
Have loved reading the comments from those who were there. Sounds like a great day,and free !
an odd aside-Kevin Coyne came to Stourbridge Art School 1971 as a visiting lecturer ( I was a student) and played us his choice of rock 'n' roll stuff-we were all a bit nonplussed because it was Frank Zappa, Beefheart etc. He was a nice guy but quite mad.
....Eastbourne Ladies flashing their knickers; Jackie in his boarding house, paper hat on head, pining for Edna, his love long gone. Lives played out in the shadow of the mental hospital on the hill where Coyne once worked. Max Wall singing the blues. A desolate, desperate, beautiful scrapbook of stories, a scuffed blues bestiary spat out by England's Gogol, the Bard of Derby, Kevin Coyne, dead at 60, coughing his lungs up, missed like mad. (Jeff Young)
Marlene is on the Majory album and was obviously also a single. It's very catchy/ commerial with great organ and guitar break, but obviously still Kevin. Nobody else could sing like Kevin! Should have been a hit.
Absolutely glorious. I remember a song called something like Marlene by Kevin Coyne being played a couple of times on the radio in the early 70s when I was a kid. I always loved it but this is astonishing.
Tremendous, but where is the first part? I bought the V sampler and played this track to death

Fantastic. If John Lennon had been American, Kevin Coyne would have been England's John Lennon.

This terrific recording exists officially in full on Virgin's double sampler called "V", released in 1975.

Ah, but did you try the green microdots, st3phenmason?
What a day indeed - Chapman & Whitney doing 'My Friend the Sun' just as the sun came out.. Gong's paper plates.. Nico making a dismal racket...

Mother me Marjory...one of my favourite Kev Tracks...but not here... with a silly British pubrock thing going on.

I think I was there. Rainy morning. Clouds floated away. Sun came out. Gong with Mr Hillage followed by Kevin. What a day.
