This is not an agressive song, and this choir is brutally killing the original feel of this song. The conductor, who is responsible for this arrangement, has done so very, very poorly, gotta go back to school, buddy, and take lessons on the original version there.
And please boys, let the girls get a chance, 'cause you can defenetely not carry this song on your own. Your pitch is all over the place.
Woooow. They need help. Where are the sopranos? And is it me or are the tenors off?
Not a good song for this choir.
And to respond to comments below, just because you're only in high school doesn't mean you can't have an incredible choir. That isn't an excuse, it's simply what they choose to hide behind.
good, honest effort. but this was by far a poor rendition of this song. However, I still give you credit. This song is challenging on so many different levels. I have not heard one choir pull of this song to it's full potential. I do believe the men overpower the woman and pitches are are sketch at best. Every here and there you can make out good parts, Overall, I be your choir is pretty good. This song is just not for you.
Not the right song for this choir. I have sung in choir, but I've never been in one that was really good, so I gave up, and do solo work now. It's choirs like this that remind me why I stopped. lol!
2.22 kind of got a bit careless and turned more into a shout. :S off pitch all around right there. lol, but it wasn't BAD bad... its just not an easy song to perform.
their vowel shapes were all over the place. they sound very imature because their voewl shapes were so disoriented. on the places when they were excited, they let the adrenalen get the best of them and the pitches were all over the place. it wasnt the best...but it was alright.
i don't think the 'show choir' sound is quite the right thing for this song.
some parts felt rushed. like the show choir mentality was pushing them to burst out into song and dance, snapping and clapping with stage smiles abound.
the men should have been darker and rounder and quieter where as the girls should have been lighter and rounder and should have complimented the guys. they hit everything... but the name "show choir" doesn't mean stand there and sing, there is supposed to be a difference between concert choir and show choir, and the cord at 1:47 was horrible! but great job overall :)
yuck. you guys need to find better harmonizing notes. i know it's synced and everything when imogen sings it, but all of you sound like dying cats. and you all sound like you're trying to sing too loud, especially the guys. i'm sorry but i can't listen to this anymore.
i love it. even though it is a little a dark and there is like no sopranos. but, still being mean isn't going to make the people singing this feel any better. as a choir girl myself i can say that you ROCK!!!!!!
Umm. The tone here is way too throaty. Did this choir listen to the original Imogen Heap version of this song? It sounds like they like... are old people in a nursing home. Sorry. I didn't like it.
The "you won't catch me around here" bit was really half-assed. They didn't sing it, they just said it. Either way I'd say overkill. It usually sounds better with a handful of people.
So, is it their fault for taking on a work they couldn't adjust to? Oh yes; oh yes, it is. When one moves to a difference piece of music, one must ALWAYS keep in mind what the composer had in mind.
They failed this consideration, failed to feel the song, and failed to respect the work. Didn't even "make it their own" (or, at least, I hope they didn't).
The only words of kindness I can, in good conscience, offer is the idea that perhaps it was just one of their bad performances.
I'm afraid the have nots have it - this choir is not a great choir.
It may be a good choir in that it can perform the old-school, the classical works per se, that many high school choirs are accustomed to performing. However, a great choir is able to apply everything they're trained to do to various OTHER works of music.
Not very good. I don't care if you say it took a lot of work or it's very professionally performed. They were yelling in part of the performance. The balance of the tenors and altos is way to strong against the sopranos. It's just was never pleasing to listen to.
The Alto/tenor parts are not too strong because in this song, the Alto/tenor voices are the the melody in the verses. Sopranos just complain if they don't get the melodic lines. So go listen to the original version, and you'll learn a lesson. I will agree that it sounds like they're yelling however...
WTF!!!! WHAT HAPPENED HERE ON THE BEGGINING? well i've seen another covers from this piece...maybe they tried to modified some achords but sorry, it doesnt work, i dont feel dynamics and the achords they tried to modified
YOU ALL NEED A HEARING CHECK I THOUGHT THEY WERE GREAT NEVER HAVE I SEEN SOO MANY PEOPLE DOING A COVER THAT IS IN SYNC WITH EACH OTHER. THIS TAKES TIME AND A LOT OF WORK IF YOU DONT APPRECIATE THEIR EFFORT THEN GO WATCH SOME OTHER DUMB VIDEO THAT WILL WASTE YOUR TIME. out of a 1-10 points I would give them 100000000000000 gillon points!!! 0_0
Some of the lines that were mumbled by the original artist were bellowed by your tenors, I think. Some volume control is important. Unfortunately, many band and choir teachers ignore this need for the sake of getting their weaker students on-key.. and voice training comes faster with volume.
you guys just need to shut up. we sang exactly what we were taught to sing. we were singing in a church so the accustics of it are loud PLUS, you're hearing from a shitty little camera microphone. but honestly i don't care what you guys say because i know that I am proud of our work...i wouldn't change a thing cause there was nothing to change. it's a challenging song by itself. GO SHOW CHOIR '06-'07!!!
I agree with some of what you said. The acoustics didn't do you justice. And to take a line from G.I. Jane, there are no bad followers but bad leaders. Around 1:47, 2:24, 2:31, there were horrible pitch problems. 2:52 settle down guys. Other than that, it was a hard piece for a High School choir. Even professional acapella groups have trouble with this one. IMHO, it wasn't polished enough for professionals, but for you guys, couldn't have done it better myself.
They're pushing too hard from their throats. It has no emotion whatsoever. It's like they don't understand what they're singing. I give them credit for doing as well as they did though. ^-^
They are all trying too hard. They are SINGING the song like Choir Girls. They aren't FEELING the song like artists. Thats why this arrangement failed. It didn't come from the heart, this song is about the destructive effects of industrialization, people forced to accept the pollution. Pain, Hurt, Loss. Very few choir directors understand the concepts of the songs they teach their students. Its sad.
They are screaming!! I hate this arrangement and I think that is the problem with most of it. The harmony is off and many sound off key but that again may be due to the arrangement. Its a difficult song, I give it an E for effort. I think if they had toned it down some and work on the arrangement it could be much better.
The main problem with how this piece was performed was the balance between each section in the choir. There were too many lower parts that totally drowned out the sopranos. I do agree, it was stiff and loud, which is definitely wrong for this song.
I also felt that this song was sped up way too much and was sung to harshly. It's supposed to have a much, much softer feel too it.
I liked the balance of this arrangement, personally. Its more faithful to the original sound of the piece. Sure, it wasn't quite right in places, but I can let that go. :) Good job, guys!
im not even kidding when i say that you guys were probably one of the best groups to perform it. i wanna try to convince my choral director to do it next year.
This is by far the worst a capella of this wonderful song I've ever heard. Each of the singers are probably talented, but the arrangement and changes to pitch are just awful
I haven't heard any choir do this piece well. One problem is that the original was produced using electronic harmonizing equipment, not human voices, and thus the pitches are accurate to an inhuman level; sometimes the pitches are quartertones apart. The other problem is that this piece takes A LOT of time to rehearse and perfect, and no high school choir has the time to devote to doing this piece well.
PS: yodevo, it's "soprano," not "saprano." Idiot. Know how to spell your own voice part.
I can't agree with you more! The most groups I've heard perform this song either fake or butcher the quarter tones. The human voice is the instrument most capable of producing a quarter tone, but not without IMMENSE amounts of training (how do you check your pitch when no other instrument can produce a quarter tone accurately?). I honestly have to wonder why people keep doing the song. It's a good display of a group's ability to harmonize, but only if they can get the close harmonies right.
i think it's crap that you all should point the finger at us and say that we weren't as good as we should have been. we were in a church, those things echo. so when you go from silent to singing in a church, it's gunna be loud. plus, mr hogan was the one directing us. if it's too powerful or american for you...he's the director. and did you ever think that we might just be interpreting it in an american way?
i think it's crap that you all should point the finger at us and say that we weren't as good as we should have been. we were in a church, those things echo. so when you go from silent to singing in a church, it's gunna be loud. plus, mr hogan was the one directing us. if it's too powerful or american for you...he's the director. and did you ever think that we might just be interpreting it in an american way?
i really don't like the alto harmony, it sound like they're wailing at the chorus... but otherwise, ya, you should keep the diction the way it is, not american, as titanxcntry says, and really, they were wailing throughout the whole song, it didn't sound like music.
Good blend and tone for some of the performance, though I have to agree with maggersyo though with the american diction. What makes a great choir is the ability to adapt to the style of the music. There are several chords that sound wrong, could be the arranger's fault, or just could be the fact that since there are such tight harmonies the various sections aren't as confident on their parts, and have a tendency to "sink" down to a pitch that makes the chord sound more bland and normal.
It's always hard to tell how good a performance is based on a recording, especially if the equipment isn't very good (no offense). I liked it, though it isn't quite my favorite. But nice job, obviously it took a lot of time and hard work to perform as well as you guys did.
and for the people who think that the song seems like its the wrong pitch, they're singing it the way that imogen would have sung it, its just that she has a vocoder to make it sound distorted.
Honestly, the two times show choir did this was beyond amazing. They all worked hard, they all really put effort into it, give them credit. Plus it's the sound of the camera thats making them sound unbalanced. Because if you were really there and heard it, you would have been amazed. So save your crap, & show some respect. I'll miss all you guys. Show choir will never be the same.<3

Its not the amount of voices.
it's the execution of said voices.
1. they're singing too loud at the start.
2. the arrangement places the melody with the sopranos only, the tenors should eithe rbe on it, or an an accompanying line.
3. due to the placement and the volume of the men you can barely hear the melody, THATS BAd.

oh way too many male voices and they are too high at that and off pitch... ugh... that was ugly
clarinetmike88 3 years ago
ugh... songs like this should not have perfect phrasing with words....

Search Hide And Seek (Valencia High School Choir) They are extremley good singers.

It's a good display of a group's ability to harmonize, but only if they can get the close harmonies right.

i think it's crap that you all should point the finger at us and say that we weren't as good as we should have been. we were in a church, those things echo. so when you go from silent to singing in a church, it's gunna be loud. plus, mr hogan was the one directing us. if it's too powerful or american for you...he's the director. and did you ever think that we might just be interpreting it in an american way?

i've listened and watched a lot of choir 'Hide and seek' versions and this one seems a bit loud so to me.
Also strange contrast in the loudness of the voices and the complete motionless-ness of the singers.
Then again; i sing like you guys if i tried, and it must be great to sing a song like this together.

where did you guys find this arrangement? do most people do it themselves or can i find it online somewhere or buy it online?
marukasu 4 years ago
the whole point of the song is that its peaceful and quiet
if they'd just calm down and listen this would sound 20 times better

the guys sound like they're screaming

well
I personally think this choir didn't have a good grasp on this song
but for a high school, it's decent
I agree with the dynamics being harsh
there's no piano.. the dynamics are so narrow and aren't dramatic
it's either forte, fortissimo or OW

i really don't like the alto harmony, it sound like they're wailing at the chorus... but otherwise, ya, you should keep the diction the way it is, not american, as titanxcntry says, and really, they were wailing throughout the whole song, it didn't sound like music.

Good blend and tone for some of the performance, though I have to agree with maggersyo though with the american diction. What makes a great choir is the ability to adapt to the style of the music. There are several chords that sound wrong, could be the arranger's fault, or just could be the fact that since there are such tight harmonies the various sections aren't as confident on their parts, and have a tendency to "sink" down to a pitch that makes the chord sound more bland and normal.

its a little too broadway.
the diction is a little too american.
the performance is a little too loud.
but good job for a high school choir.
maggersyo 4 years ago
we werent that loud at the beggining, it had to have been the on camera mic
poiklpupoiklpu 4 years ago
I dislike how loud it is. I mean, starting out with a forte. dyanamics are off, really.
I don't think it's just the recorder.

It's always hard to tell how good a performance is based on a recording, especially if the equipment isn't very good (no offense). I liked it, though it isn't quite my favorite. But nice job, obviously it took a lot of time and hard work to perform as well as you guys did.

Every other performance I've heard has this same arrangement or very similar. My school is the only one that I've heard that is different.

i just wish they girls were louder. the girls aren't coming through enough

nice. :)
and for the people who think that the song seems like its the wrong pitch, they're singing it the way that imogen would have sung it, its just that she has a vocoder to make it sound distorted.
m0nk33b0y 4 years ago
uhh where are all the high pitched parts? it was good, but it was definately missing something

Show choir will never be the same.<3

wtf. doesn't sound like the some most of the time.
i think the chords are wrong, or melody isn't loud enough or harmony is too loud.
