  • The Lightning gate guardian at BAe Salmesbury is a bloodly disgrace. The condition of this great aeroplane should make the management hang their heads in shame. Come on get the paint and polish out and restore it to it's fomer glory.

  • i love these kinds of jets, they are giant engines with wings

  • I can see why the English have such fond memories of the Lightning. It kinda reminds me of the one lady you see in every local dive bar. You know the one; a little old and past her prime, big with a bit of a pot-belly. She's damn ugly but most of the guys like her because she's really fast, has a pair of Red Tops up front and has to go home right away after the deed is done. Think about it. (If you know anything about the BAC Lightning your laughing your ass off right now.)

  • In British Airways trials in April 1985, Concorde was offered as a target to NATO fighters including F-15 Eagles, F-16 Fighting Falcons, F-14 Tomcats, Mirages, F-104 Starfighters - but only Lightning XR749, flown by Mike Hale and described by him as "a very hot ship, even for a Lightning", managed to overtake Concorde on a stern conversion intercept. how many modern plaes could catch it in sustained flight?

  • This was the only plane capable of catching Concorde on a sustained supersonic run, others could on a short burst but would have to be in the right place at the right time, Concorde was also capable of exceeding design speed set to maximise the life of the airframe figures of 2.04 and 2.2 mach are quoted -

  • Awesome :-) Would love to see one of these flying again.

  • @ay76 Romania still have MiG-21 Lancer (an upgraded version) in service

  • Whata wet day that was.I was soaked to the skin out on the runway edge with the rest of the LPG crew. But a hearty meal was had after in the pub.

  • Wow, i ve seen many jets engage afterburner on take off, F15`S, f16`s , Tornado`s etc , but i ve never seen acceleration off the block as this lightning at 1.25. Probably not at full afterburner either as it was a static run with breaks on after a few seconds. Like a space rocket , what a beast !!

  • As much as i like cold war era jets the lighting isnt that impressive, the opening scenes of top gun with the F-14 tomcat is way more impressive and those were second generation power plants.

  • The aircraft is pretty much ariworthy, bit it is not permitted to fly in the uk by the CAA (Criminals Agains Aviation)!! Nothing to do with noise, more like its a mach 2+ jet from the 50's = Bit too risky for the caa to certify! The maintenance schedule is immense.

  • I wish I saw this fly, I was too young to see this before it was retired from service.

  • only uk could make this. usa just confiscated our materials so they could reach mach 1 before ourselves, they even claimed the rear flaps at the back were there invention, no, britain made these, fyi they were to stop shockwaves stalling the mechanisms

  • @nickjarvis01 Those top secret rear flaps that you claim the brits invented are called elevators which are attached to the horizontal tailplane, just like the ones used in ww1 all the way to the jet age.Only until bell aircraft produced the x-1 with rocket power did us yanks find the need for a full flying tail plane and the russians solved it a few years later.By the way the shock waves at subsonic speed negated elavator authority,it did'nt cause the aircraft to stall. Limey dipshit!!!!!!

  • @ThePolyweave "The shock waves at subsonic speed"? Are you sure you didn't get that a bit mixed up? I didn't think there was much of an issue with shock waves when flying subsonic....

  • we need this to become airworthy again to make airshows more interesting :)

  • @xxxdarkheartedboixxx Why isn't it airworthy?? I thought it wasn't allowed to fly in the UK because of the noise it produces?????? I remember James Mays flying in one of these superb machines on the BBC but he had to go to South Africa to do so. Which I think is preposterous.

  • @Caracalla23 The aircraft is pretty much ariworthy, bit it is not permitted to fly in the uk by the CAA (Criminals Agains Aviation)!! Nothing to do with noise, more like its a mach 2+ jet from the 50's = Bit too risky for the caa to certify! The maintenance schedule is immense.

  • @b18boost Actually it's more to do with lack of spares + money + no airworthy engines + a million other reasone, CAA is one tiny aspect and they are not as bad as people make out, far from sticking up for them, but they are not the main reason why there are no flying Lightnings.

The LPG do an amazing job keeping these girls alive, but I got that info direct from one of their key members and can't think of anyone more qualified to give an answer.

Just enjoy the Lightnings that taxy :)

  • it looks like a fat dog.

  • Lol. Love the lurch at the start. She really wanted to get off the ground! Great video.

  • Pure power. Notice that you have to put the brakes on to control the taxiing speed without even setting up the idle. Three minutes from release of brakes to the cruise altitude of a commercial liner, and higher IAS to boot even if you are still in the optimum descent profile (about 30 degrees). Quite an achievement.

  • these bad boys could fly at 1500 mph. 1500 mph is just beyond comprehension.

  • @TheMrDobbins Not if your an AMERICAN!

  • When this jet retired you had to pry the pilots out of them.

  • What an awesome jet. Think of all the USSR cold war air crews who looked out their window & saw 1 or 2 of those coming up on them...i heard the lightning was only jet to ever catch the Concorde & intercept either SR71 or U2 or both...

  • @matapan50 No way it could intercept the SR-71!! Russain Mach 4 sams couldn't so why would you think a mach 2 fighter could.

  • @matapan50 Your higher than ten hippies, catching the concord is easy for the lighting as it would outperform the concord.they both have a service ceiling of 50 to 60 thousand feet. The sr-71 can exceed 80 thusand feet and do mach.3 plus. There is a famous russian pennisula that the russian would send up mig 25s to intercept the SR.The sr pilots would dump fuel to create a vapor trail so the mig pilots could spot them but in the end the SR was half way to alaska with the mig boys jerking off.

  • Thats not a jet its a bloody monster.

  • This is at Bruntingthrope (?) ??

  • Yes it is :)

  • What's up with the "pregnant-belly"? Extra fuel tank? Not suprised; it only carries a couple gallons as it is! LOL. I love when the afterburners light up, the way they flicker a bit. At least the rainy grey day makes a good contrast. I wonder if I can find a video of a lightning firing up after dark?

  • I have a video of a night static run if you're interested :)

Yep, the "pregnant belly" is the ventral tank, they needed all the space they could get for fule :)

And to answer your other question, the engines were stacked because it minimised drag. The downside was that it left very little space for anything else, it was litterally a seat on a rocket lol :D.

  • Yeah, I'm interested. Sounds cool. I was just thinking, was the ventral tank a fixed tank, or an odd style of drop tank like the "slipper tanks" the Brits used in WWII? I can sorta see how the stacked engines cut drag, since the plane would have to be taller than wider to fit the pilot anyway. But other planes use L-R engines; the engines are sort of "hidden" behind the wings. Seems like stacked worked for the Lightning, but it's not ideal. I wish I could see one with a single BIG engine!

  • @justforever96 Its called an F-8 Crusader, lighter and faster. The f-8 required new plexiglass tech as it would overheat the canopy, distorting the view.

  • @ThePolyweave I don't see how an F-8 Crusader counts as a single-engine equivalent to the Lightning...the F-8 was a dogfighter, went well less than Mach 2, and used guns. The Lightning was an interceptor, went over Mach 2 (a bit faster than the F-8, you think?), and used missiles. And it looked way cooler. So, I'd STILL like to see a single-engine Lightning.

  • @justforever96 The ventral tank was an afterthought. Early models did not have it. When fitted it actually improved the area ruling slightly (made it more aerodynamic). Dad used to fly these in the 60's and 70's. As a kid I used to go and deafen myself by watching them taking off at RAF Gutersloh where dad was stationed and we lived 200 yards from the end of the runway. Plenty of afterburners then when there was a Russian incursion into NATO airspace.

  • Nice! I can't believe how skinny the tires are! (oh, okay, I guess they're "tyres" on a British jet XP) I never knew about the Lightning until last week; it's one of my new favorites. Such a unique plane; I love the planform. So cool looking! And the stacked engines; anyone know why that idea never stuck? I can sort of see why, the way jets evolved. Funny all the similarities with a MiG-29. I guess they are for the same thing, high speed interception, and from the same era too.

  • @justforever96 Whoops...I meant to type "MiG-25", not MiG-29! This doesn't look much like the MiG-29 at all. Now, I'd say the MiG-25 is about as close to a single-engine Lightning you'll ever see. Roughly the same speed, same purpose, both have nose intakes and shitty range. And it you cut triangles out of the trailing edge of the MiG-25's wing roots, you'd even have the same planform!

  • i would love to fly that over london or new york and set all the car alarms off!!!!

  • Even to be in the cockpit on a run up is an easy enough privilege!

  • Dont feed the Troll !!

  • But it's fun XD lol

I didn't mark this as spam btw :(

  • Yay the not spam button works again lol XD

  • Again about the Lightning in this clip I think its need a fat removal operation or a

hernia operation, look at the "tummie" protruding from the bottom of the fueslage ha ha ha

  • Well whatever you care to dream mate! I suspect you quite like the non-Irish MiG 25 just a little.

As it happens, I think the MiG25 is rather good too - you just can't compare the two different aircraft - like chalk and cheese!

Incidentally, the Lightning had a greater rate of climb than the MiG - but then the Saturn 5 rocket was several times faster still! Crap Lightning - clearly!

As for the "tummy" - as a fuel tank, at least it has a purpose, unlike the penis attached to your forehead!

  • Perhaps if you had the intelligence to read, you might have noticed that I referred to the Lightning as "crap" after comparing it to the Saturn 5 rocket! Since sarcasm is clearly lost on you, you might like to research the Saturn 5 - it's what was used or the Moon landings! The moon is that large round white thing in the night sky that you clearly howl at.

  • I very well know that Saturn is a planet in our solar system and 5 is the fifth element in the set of positive integers. And Moon is the Moon and you know what moon landings never happend it was again due to the British u know.

  • Having scoffed my chalky repast, I've now realised that we're all wrong, and that yours is a lone voice of sanity among we band of backward peasants, and that the Lightning was nothing but a pathetic heap of junk. Britain never started the Industrial Revolution, nor have we ever invented anything technological at any time. Thankfully we have Russia and Ireland to thank for everything, including this interweb thingy - Tim Berners-Lee will be disappointed. I'm off to look for my tiny penis.

  • You are so candid!, Back in my mind I knew that you were not the typical British dumb ass. Now you know the truth, it is good to see that you, by yourself realized the truth, another Brit might have needed to consult Uncle Sam or even the French to know the truth.

Hey, if you need any cheese just come to Ireland we Irish are happy to share our cheese with you and best of luck in ur adventure to find your own cock, i can realize from your attitude that its gonna be an arduous task. Good luck!

  • at least we don't get beaten by Belgian colonists!!

    LOL!

  • Lmao

  • vnck25 - when you are knowledgable with your comments, then you will be taken seriously. Until then.......

  • Look at that belly in the lightning its resembles a fat ass British grandma!! lol

This shit was no match to the Russian Mig 25, and Mig 31 which were like hot Russian girls , still operational. Fat ass Brits cannot do anything right.

  • vnck25 - are you aware that the Lightning entered service a full ELEVEN years before the MiG 25? Your comparison is as daft as saying that a wartime Spitfire is no match for a new Typhoon - of COURSE it isn't! The Lightning's closest Russian comparison was the MiG21 - which was 150mph slower. Even the American's F-104 Starfighter (from the same era) was 170mph slower!

Lightning was faster than any other comparable fighter of the time! I suggest you get your facts right next time vnck25 ;)

  • Well yes true it was faster than the

MIG -21 but still its was no mach for the MIG 25. An the English Lightning was not English it was Irish the damn British stole the idea from an Irish Areonautics Engineer

  • Erm, the Lightning P1 was designed by W. E. W. (Teddy) Petter, who was English, and EE's chief engineer at the time.

  • Well, the ACTUAL designer was Teddy Petter - a Brit! Who are you on about then?

And what's with the MiG 25 again? That's a completely different aeroplane from a much later era. If your comparison is fair then I'll gladly point out just how much better the BAe Typhoon is than your precious (Irish designed I guess!) MiG 25 is!

  • BAe Typoon is not as fast as the MIG 25 which is a legendary airplane not a single British airplane can match the MIG 25. The MIG 25 is a pure Russian plane, no Irishman is involved in it.

And if you do your research you can find out that Tedy Petters mother was half Irish and his grand father ( fathers side ) was Irish too. No bloody Englsihman can make Aircraft, look at them play cricket they are even loosing to colonies like India, Sri Lanka Pakistan...

  • Excuse my ignorance. Is there a Lightning that is operational in the U.K??

  • None flying, the only flying ones are in Cape Town, South Africa.

How ever there are 4 (that I know of) ground running lightnings that (fast) taxi in the UK.

XR728 and XS904 (the one in this video) with the Lightning preservation group at Bruntingthorpe.

XS458 at Cranfield (which isn't open to the public sadly).

And XR724 which is stranded at what is left of RAF Binbrook.

There is also one in the US but no idea what is happenng with her.

  • I would be grateful if anyone can explain why the EE Lightning so little range had ?

It dosn`t appear to be a very small aircraft - or were the engines "greedy"

  • Yes, the engines are very "Greedy", they will empty the tanks very quickly, especially if left on full after burner :).

There were some lightnings fitted with over wing fuel tanks, to extend the range.

  • i would just have to take off if i were the pilot. who`s gonna catch you??

  • i think that any pilot who claimed that (as professional as he may be)wasn't tempted, would be a liar...

  • B.A.C. showed the world what the British engineers can do with this aircraft

  • What a tease! Damn, I'd love to see one fly. Somebody said they still fly them in South Africa. Is that true?

  • Yes it is true, they fly out of Cape Town, SA (search google for Thunder City).

They have 4 Lightnings, 2 two seaters and 2 single seaters. They also have 3 Buccaneers and Hunters.

For a lot of money you can buy a fligt in a lightning.

  • i remember this when the reheat kept failing but it was a good day and boy is she loud lol

  • nothing says made in britain quite like a lightning.

  • i love the electric lightning, its the best fighter jet ever, i have it on the flight simulator i have an its the easiest to fly, way easier than than the hawker hunter and the gloster javelin

  • Best fighter jet ever.

  • HAHAH < did you hear the car alarm go off

  • i was there a bit to the left, it was absolutely chucking it down, even if he wanted to i don't think he could have landed it again, fantastic plane though, set all the car alarms off for about 150 yards, hah!

  • You can just see she wants to hop...fully-reheated Avons roaring. I wonder how many times the pilot has wanted to just pull back and go vertical in it?

Now the 'Bears' are back over the UK thanks to Putin...the RAF may want to revert back Fireflash missiles and F.1's on High alert....at least as a plan 'B' say the Typhoon's fail.

    Hey..it worked with the Shackleton.
