This symphony is a sort of well of aesthetic power that never fails to slake the thirst for beauty no matter how many times one dips one's bucket into it.
This is a stunningly original performance of a beloved familiar symphony; as if the piece had been "cleaned up" like a famous painting. I have read that Kleiber infused his conducting with meticulous detail and a rhythmic balletic flow. This is very evident throughout, especially in the last movement. I am overwhelmed with joy every time I watch it. Thank you so much for this gem!
He paints the majesty of sound using the rich colors of the instruments and the great players. The brush strokes of his hands, arms and body bring the glorious sound to life. A rare privilege.
Thanks for posting this great symphony conducted by this great maestro. Kleiber's laissez faire approach in the opening is appropriate for a world-class orchestra who knows this music intimately—more of a partnership than leader-follower dynamic. But that's a mark of a great conductor, knowing how much he (or she) needs to do at any given moment. I love what he does in the second theme, 3:56—only one of many magical moments.
Under Kleiber, at least for once, the second violin and holzblaser are heard... it's amazing! I didn't believe the fundamentalism of VPO "tradizione" first violin chauvinism permitted less than the usual display of musical backwardness... anything was possible under Carlos Kleiber!
Magic. Poetry. As intimate as any orchestral playing can be. as far from sensationalism as any conductor can be. Did anyone understand Brahms as Kleiber did?
Simply wonderful a truly great conductor

What could we say? Just magnificent, possibly more than that. Human, heartfelt, deeply moving. But please correct the year, it was in 1992.

Un lirismo cosmico: la frase (musicale) di Kleiber è recitata con una giustezza e una genialità analitica entusiasmanti.
