I was right where you were but to the right of Max.... I wanted to make a huge banner for the night behind the stage that read.... "tear it down, throw it away" ...... I ended up making my mom a sign that read "throw me a kiss for my big 60 birthday" Bruce finally saw it in his last steps off the stage after Rosie and threw my mom a kiss!"
Thanks for posting, I was there just to the left of this video, What an awesome show this was. Last time I saw him at the Spectrum he opened for Chicago in '73 great venue
Amazing. As always. I don't want to sound bitter, but that is the one song I've been waiting for him to play for a long, long time. We didn't get it for the last show in Jersey. Oh, well. Philadelphia is a lucky town. Until the Yankees kick their asses! Let's go Yankees! Thank you Bruce! Can't wait to see you guys again. Maybe NYC.
House seats Monday were 4th row, right in front of Steve (yes there were seats in the pit back then). John Lennon was killed that night. Both shows were great, but palpably different given the post-homicide tone of the second.
Oh, and because of the Lennon connection, I came to learn many years later that my wife was also at the show, 10 years before I met her.
Ironically, my Dad, who was a firefighter in Baltimore, knew the guy who had helped design the fire safety procedures for the Spectrum. That guy got me 4 house seats for the Monday night show, which I parlayed into a seat for the Tuesday night show as well. "Just across the county line, stranger passin through put up a sign that counts the men fallen away to the price you pay. And girl before the end of the day, Im gonna tear it down and throw it away."
2 hours later, the "new" Ticketron computer system - which previously rewarded fans who camped out at the venue, but now, on that day, treated the haggard and cold folks in the parking lot the same as someone who wandered into King of Prussia Mall at quarter to nine - shut most everybody out.
Now the rest of that stanza came true "Theyve come so far, and theyve waited so long, just to end up caught in a dream where everything goes wrong."
True story. Camped out 2 nights in the parking lot of the Spectrum in 1980. On saturday morning around daybreak a guy with a stereo blasts The Price You Pay. "Where the dark of night holds back the light of the day And you gotta stand and fight for the price you pay" Everybody cheered.
No idea when we saw him do this in Dec 80 in that bldg during the River, that it wd become such a rarity. Happy for all those who got to see it last nite.
Let me be the first to say 'what an amazing performance, biggest surprise of the tour?' even allowing for it being soundchecked...now why couldn't have done that at GS5?!!!!
A truly historical moment to open the legendary final show of this magical 4 night stand at the old Spectrum in south Philly... Absolutely Amazing... to say the least!
Free At Last Free at last lol!! I never thought I would see the day again when this song would be played again. one of my all time favorites and definetly underated songs!! thanks for posting !
