Grab it from neck, there is some loose skin there, when cat is grabbed from there it becomes more relaxed as that releases some endorfines to cat body, mechanism nature has put to cat so their mom can carry kittens from neck.

Cats can be also scared by sound of water is making, like when water hits the tub it is like loud hissing, so it helps to put water into bucket before cat is put to tub and then take small amount of water so there is no such scary noises. That helps with my cat.

And how warm does the water have to be?

Quite warm as cat body temperature is lot higher than human body temperature, so they feel our warm colder than us. But not hot.

Cat shampoo if you use shampoo, but I use only water, it cleans most of mess what my cat has gotten into, ashes, mud and such, cat don't need regular washing, only when some accident has caused cat being messy with stuff it should not lick.

Also make sure you are not bent over a cat, it can feel threatening to cat and then cat will panic and scratch.

Tips I found about missing cats include leaving his/hers fauvorite food and toy outside and if possible leave porch door open, sometimes cat can be quite near but never in right place at right time. If cat is not trapped inside some building, then it usually can manage somehow by it's own, but it will revert to wild creature after such long time so it won't show up if person is standing or facing towards it. String is good tool also.

But maybe you know those already.

LOL! I'm sorry but I can't help but laugh...hahaha, your poor cat XD you did give some good tips tho. My cat is waaaaaay more difficult then yours (lucky you!), but clipping and filing his nails will make things easier when i try to bathe him again...

I just fill the bath with water , then i put my cat in a cage and then I drop the cage in the bath....when bubles stop coming to the sruface I pull the cage back up.
