Really the shaving horse isn't cheating. In the stone age times, a child or friend would've most likely been holding the bow steady like that for you. So it's fine.
i have a bush bow but i don't know what wood it's made of. the bark is wrinkled in places from the shaping, the bark is, never mind when i get new bataries i'll post a video of it.
wet wood is much easier to work on, hence it's softness, but a good bow has to be dried out before the tillering process, so that set and other unwanted qualities keep at bay.
Paeloaelo, did you dry the bow out after floor tillering it?
Yea, the bow was dried for about 2 weeks between working sessions. The wood dries really fast when you thin it out. Just weigh the bow as you go. When it stops loosing weight for a period of about a week, the wood is usually dry sufficiently.
i read a book and it had a chapter on native american tribes. some would let wood dry for a season, some for 2 years, and a handful dryed their wood for 5 years
@LALAKIStro sorry it took way too long to catch you comment bro. Tillering means removing wood from the belly of the bow. The wood must be worked so that the bow bends evenly. This distributes the stress in the bow evenly and makes the bow funktional.
Hey Tom, I'm stuck on finding ways to make a bow without a bow horse. Can you show us a video of your lashing idea or some other methods? Pretty pretty please??
Man this is awesome!Return to nature...it's so relaxing to watch this and listen your voice...it seems to me that you're a so calm man....BIG RESPECT FROM CROATIA..
PS you'll live 100 years cuz you just don't give a fuck to anything
ive got a tip for people dont go and get a stave when everything is wet i did once and i thought i found a perfect one it would bend past full draw then i let it dry for overnight and i bent it 3 inches and it broke :( luckily i tested it before i made the whole thing lol
I love your work bench. I am going to make me one and then make a bow like yours. I've got plenty of river cane growing in the back yard for arrow shafts and lots of chert in the creek for arrowheads. Done my share of knapping of thick glass and thick glass makes a good arrowhead.
Making a bow is easy but making a good bow is difficult. Finding good bow material is difficult and the quality of the material is very important. You need to work different way with a various of wood types.
Tillering is difficult, you have to learn it carefully. Making a bow is lot of fun and relaxing hobby. Don't give up with your first one or the second, you need to learn it! Do not try to make strong bows at first. Don over dry your wood material.
Im not sure what its called but for the people who dont have the stones you can use the paint scraper thing you use too scrape the paint and wallpaper off walls
hey man since i don't have any of these stones and i can't find anywhere to buy them. can i just use a regular jack knife to make these? and will it come out with the same results?
it takes a lot of practice to use these kinds of stone tools anyway. You'd certainly be better off trying metal tools first. A couple of different sizes of knives (e.g. a pocket knife and a sheath knife) is an excellent way to make the same kinds of bows, but using stone age tools adds more sentimental value to your bow I've found.
Great video, faved...Also, i'd like to point out that i love how you get all into it thinking "oh ya, this is how they did it back then" and then you hear a plane flying overhead Lmao.
A lot of different types. Ash, oak, walnut, hickory, privet, toyon, yew, juniper, Italian Cypress, maple, osage, ipe, and maybe some others I can't remember! Thanks for checking out the video. Tom

How would you split a much thicker piece of wood? Say, 3 3/4 inches thick in diameter piece of oak?
Thanks!

you could use a vise, wrap the bow with a cloth or between two blocks of wood. It will hold tight, but be careful not to damage the wood
