  • @DarkEmoE

Steel phantom was built in 1991 and the inversions were extremely rough. In 2001 Kennywood (with the help of Morgan) extended the drop from 225 to 232 ft, removed the inversions, rebuilt the last section, and repainted abd rethemed the coaster. If it hadn't have been for the changes, people would still be tortured by this Arrow fail today.

  • wtf why would they get rid of all the inversions.

  • they could fix this ride with 5 words :MORGAN TRACK AND NEW TRAINS

  • bring back this amazing ride!!

  • what camera is this?

  • There is a difference between phantoms revenge and steel phantom

  • they took it out before i was tall enough to ride it, eff being short.. :/ it needs to come back.

  • is this the same ride as phantoms revenge

  • @CBnRD2217

It is yeah, but without the inversions. Plus the second drop was extended by 5 feet. Never rode Steel Phantom, mainly because of the distance of the Atlantic Ocean, but have since ridden Phantom's revenge, and I love it.

  • The screaming in the back is crazy lol

  • What I don't understand is that if they can build the skyrocket which is soo smooth to ride with all kinds of loops & corkscrews, why not rebuild the old phantom? It has the same sort of set-up with the seats. I mean, I love the phantom's revenge now, but still. It's kind of disappointing to hear that they tour down such a good ride..

  • bring this thing back? it looks like murder on your neck and head o_o

  • im just got 5 foot last year im 13 years old and just last year i got to ride my 1st rolar coasters but now i lov them

  • such a great ride....i remember i was just tall enough the last year they had it i went to kennywood like 4 times that summer just to experience the ride enough before they took it out...i do remember it hurting my neck though

  • i wish i was tall enough to experince this ride back when it was all awsome.

But people had o complain and when i finally got tall enough it was already changed.

  • @kaykayababy same here !!!! :(

  • It's the phantoms revenge now

  • @Bostonsports2000 the difference is that we went from awesome to lame

  • this ride was awesome! never should have been changed

  • thats why thy brought inthe sky rocket

  • That second or two at the top of the first hill were the most exhillarating(sp) and nerve-racking moments.

  • this was the ultimate rollercoaster. it had a hell of a big drop, really fast, and had inversions

  • THIS was a roller coaster.

  • i get dizzy just watching it:D

  • come to kennywood.. where half of all the pittsburg people with be....the other half is split between three rivers and primanti brothers.

  • The above statements are true about the Steel Phantom before it became Phantoms Revenge. I saw a women get off the Steel Phantom holding her neck, I knew she didn't keep her head against the headrest like they tell you too.

  • gotta love dubbed in screams XD i have this movie =]

  • @Bostonsports2000 In the 2000-2001 off season the original Steel Phantom was modified into the Phantom's Revenge. The 4 inversions were removed and the trains were modified to eliminate the over the shoulder restraints that everyone complained about. This past off season, the remainder of the original Steel Phantom track that was still present on the first half of the ride was replaced. The whole ride should be pretty darn smooth now.

  • I'm a huge fan of Arrow coasters and the original Phantom was definitely one of my favorite. Rough and painful is the name of the game when it comes to Arrow, if you can't handle it, don't ride them.

  • this looks more fun than it is now. 225 foot drop and it has 4 inversions. unbelieveable

  • wtf only ONE corkscrew?!

  • i wish i got to ride you steel phantom cause they build 1991 and i was born 1999 and bring back the steel phantom

  • 0:49 there is nothing in lost Kennywood. It's amazing how much things have changed there over the years.

  • i used to have the tape which this was featured. the screams are FAKE!!!!!!

  • @creamcitysista1970 I know. The people sound like deranged monkeys at the tamest points of the ride! And that Eric Boardman guy wouldn't stop shouting WOAH on Batman The Ride hahaha.

  • wow, excellent camera work on this one. For as much as this ride jolted you around.

  • Yeah i grew up and still live in Pa... they should have let it how it was...:(

  • Loved the phantom but the sound on this video is very fake.

  • I have this disk.

  • go to Giant Eagle and get a discount :)

  • Well, we at least know that this was filmed after 1995.

  • @dandy97 I thought this was taped in 1994.

  • this is cool to watch, i was having a hard time remembering what the loops were like.

  • phantom's revenge > steel phantom

  • Bring back Steel Phantom

  • ..... *vomit*

  • They should have replaced the shoulder harnesses with lap bars and did nothing with the track.

  • That's a very intense coaster compared to Phantom's Revenge! I wish they could bring this back!

  • @evilportrait Trust me, The part with the loops is just like scream machine was at Great Adventure and phantoms revenge is way better.

  • This Looks Alot More Intense Than Sky Rocket

  • That picture at the beginning and the ride itself are 1000 times more badass than Phantoms revenge. Ironic that the new ride is even called Revenge cause the original was way more pissed off and rough than the new one is, but it was iconic. I'm a pretty skinny guy, but my neck is 18 inches mostly from trying to keep my head from bouncing around on this ride as a kid. Good times

  • 80mph straight into a turn in one of the damn Arrow trains must have felt GREAT...

still...I would have gladly given it a spin!

  • This looks so much shorter than I remember it...but it always was about the second drop really, anyway.

  • this looks intense

  • i used to ride this with my dad when i was younger. i miss it a lot!!!

  • NOOOOOOO COME BACK I WANT T RIDE YOU

  • Everyone now says to bring back the Steel phantom, but when it was here all everyone did was bitch about how painful it was. Thats why all the inversions are out. I personally loved the steel phantom there was just idiots that didnt know how to ride it and keep there head back.

  • @rody1350 If it's so "Painful" DONT RIDE IT THEN!! Stupid bitches.

  • @rody1350 I'm not much of a speed coaster fan, but I do like roller coasters with inversions in them and all I can say is that I wish Steel Phantom was there still, but because of the complainers and the sue crazy people they had to take it out! My dad said this ride there's nothing to it if you keep your head back and that's what I do on roller coasters with inversions. People told me that Fahrenheit at Hershey Park hurts, but I rode it last week and it is a fun ride I didn't hurt my neck.

  • @rody1350 The Phantom's Revenge still hurts like hell. Those bunny hops at the end are guaranteed whiplash.

  • @sokkerking12345 phantom's revenge is actually really smooth the only rough spot is the first bunny hill after the third pass through thunderbolt

  • those are guys screaming i hope you know that

  • I hate the fake screams they put in these.... And the phantoms revenge is crappy compared to what the steel phantom was. Considering I too have ridden over 50 coasters, the phantom revenge is nothing... Coasters include stealth, tatsu, déjá vù and gotten stuck, x scream, firehawk, nighthawk, colossus at thorpe park, kingda ka, millenium force, chang at sfkk and alot more.

  • I remember riding this thing right after they built it when I was around 11 or 12 years old. They got rid of it?

  • @SweatLaserXP no they got rid of the loops and renamed it

  • The Phantom's Revenge is awesome, but it is a coaster for those new riders. Considering I've ridden over 50 roller coasters in my life, and I'm 11, I'm probably a more major coaster, being that some of the coasters were: This one Superman Thunderbolt Racers X-Scream coaster Top Thrill Dragster Kingda Ka Batman The Jokers Jinx Front Twirl Speed Rocket lots of others
  • i was like 3 when the steel phantom was there .. they should make it that one again

  • @PredatorsGoodorBad same here

  • Only had the chance to ride this one a few times. It was extremely intense, much more so than the redesigned ride that replaced it.

Most people say that for the first part of the 1990s, this was the baddest coaster on the planet! I believe it.

  • @999beme Worst Or Badass?

  • Enough of the inversions already. I'm not a HUGE fan of inversions but I do really like the zero-g roll/horse shoe roll on the Maverick at Cedar Point though.

  • Im suprised this goes as fast as the Intimidator!

  • There will never be anything like the original. Your head felt like you had just woken up after downing a bottle of scotch when you got off. So intense, so fast, so fun. I'll never forget my last ride on SP. I miss it :(

  • @PhantasMc86 i miss the steel phantom to yo. i miss this ride so so much : (( wish they could bring this ride back

  • This ride was ruined when the inversions were removed. Sure the inversions and shoulder restraints caused some peoples heads to bang around.

There was also low ridership because of the issues that some people had, but I rode the original ride for years between 5-10 rides per my trip and experienced no massive head trauma or headaches from the ride.

I may have felt slightly weezy after a few rides, but just like many drugs it was a good feeling and the original Steel Phantom was like crack!

  • Now instead of inversions we are left with a bunch of lame bunny hops which have no chance to damage peoples heads, but can instead bruise ones ass.

The original ride was more exciting and a classic. The redesigned Phantom's Revenge will never come close to the original.

I can only hope they'll once again redesign the ride some time in the future, and keep the first 2 drops again and change the rest of the ride to make it better.

The end of the ride is now bland, and bruises your ass!

  • MINIClipPRODUCTION......

The new Phantom's Revenge doesnt have the hills because of the massive head trauma and headaches people got. And it's still a pretty cool ride

  • how awesome it was obviously the head bumping situations with the shoulder restraints is why they removed the inversions. they could of saved money if they just replaced the cars and the shoulder restraints with non head bumping shoulder restraints its very simple

  • they dont even have lost kennywood yet

  • this ride hurt the hell out of my neck. that's why i only rode it once. but it's good to see the vid. phantom's revenge doesn't compare.

  • they took out the loop cause 1 day 12 ppl complained about there neck herting really bad it was extream rickedy dont ask why i no this lol im just good with rollercoasters

  • Where did you get that info from?

And why is your spelling so terrible?

  • oh sorry rude bitch on wheels

    lol pwned u

and i am awesome ik things that u dont so bye looser

  • Just noticed how old you are... LOL

    Good luck in life.

  • rude much wow

good luck with ur rude no class life

  • I miss this! :( The new one is okay, but this is better!

  • BRING BACK STEEL PHANTOM

  • new roller coaster at kennywood next year!!!!

0-50mph in under 3 seconds, three inversions, and 90 degree drops

srsly, google it. I'm pumped =)

  • they soo should have kept the loop in the steel phantom i only ever got to ride the phantoms revenge now kennywood doesn't have anygood rides with loops the phantom's revenge is still really fun though

  • I know they should have kept the loops, the reason was the ride was to rickety the shakes people around to much so they redid the ride. But alot of rids they ruined. Old mill And Gold rusher.

  • Wow, too bad that they took out the inversions. That batwing looked amazing!

  • a guy fell of in and died (splat) on the loop

  • lol i jzt saw the video u took this from

  • the OLD steel phantom was one of the first roller coasters i rode back in 1992-3, and now, nothing compares to it, it was the best roller coaster ever built. the phantoms revenge SUCKS. i rode it once, and have been disappointed with kennywood ever since. the only ride that comes close to this is the Great American Scream Machine, at Six Flags in jackson NJ, but even that, its not the same, rebuild the old phantom!!

  • the phatoms revenge is still fun. But what they ruined was old mill and gold rusher. Bring back the gold rusher and old mill.

  • revenge is better

  • yea right

  • the phantoms revenge is the same until it goes under the other roller coaster

  • well the loops are gone the first half is the same

  • i rode the revenge

  • Rode this once-LOVED IT!!! Yeah, i was only four, but i was with my mom, so i got on.

  • Why did they shut it down? It looked fun.....

  • theres like 5 loop-di-loops! My friend and I went on a stimulator for this that actually moved and we went upsidedown and you could see out hair shadow on the stimulator screen!

  • simulator where?

  • why?

  • cuse i always wanted 2 go on the steel phantom nd now that its gone a simulator is as close as im gettin lol

  • no thay took out the ride because it was giving some people a wiplash on there neck

  • are you serious?

  • yeah. it would throw people around becaouse it was too rough. you had ot take out your earings while riding

  • There are still rides that require (or advise) you to take your earrings out (ie, Maverick). These old Arrow coasters were just too rough for their own good, so Kennywood decided to upgrade, versus destroying the entire ride like Busch did with Drachen Fire.

  • Indeed yes, kennywood kept the tradition. But this was my first big boy roller coaster, bitch threw you around but fun!

  • i love Kennywood i go there every year..........i wish they could build a new park around pittsburgh that would be pretty awesome

  • i miss the loops, but not the whiplash and severe pounding you had to endure on that thing. It is as smooth as butter now.

  • one year at our school picnic, it was somewhere in the late 90's like 96, 97 or maybe even 98, i was watching the phantom from the line of the pittsburgh plunge, the cars started up the first hill, right before the first car started over the top, it stopped, it was there for a little while, then you seen a couple of the staff walk up the walkway and get everybody off and they all had to walk down the walkway... wish i could see a video of that on youtube... someone has to have it.

  • go pittsburgh!!

  • Phantom's Revenge is infinitely better than the old Steel Phantom. There's a reason it's now rated one of the best steel coasters in the world while Steel Phantom was never rated nearly as high. Loops/inversions don't equal a good ride.

  • I don't understand why they had to actually had to take out the loops and inversions? Why couldn't they just fix it up, get new shoulder restraints with some new cars. You know fix it up, make it smoother. Not remake the whole thing. I mean I love the Phantom's Revenge but my mom said that the Steel Phantom was one heck of a ride!

  • u took the words from my mouth! lol

like every1 is like it was rough so they took out the loops and cork screw umm heres an idea just fix so it smoother ughh hopefully the new onwers will put a loop coaster we need 1 so bad!

  • Looks like a reeeeeally cool ride.

    Where is this?

  • Used to be at Kennywood but they renovated it to make it smoother and its called The Phantom's Revenge, and its still at Kennywood in Pittsburgh, PA.

  • Actually its in West Mifflin :)

  • the renovated and now it sucks because it gets old so fast wow 2 big hills then it bobs u up and down a couple times

  • they changed it waaaaaaaahhhh!!!!!!!!!!!

  • phantoms revenge is better (smoother and got bunny hills). Except I miss the inversions.

  • wish we still had that instead of the Steal Phantom's Revenge. they need a roller coaster with a loop/corckscrew...something more thrillling!

  • This was the fastest, longest, and biggest (highest) in the world when it first came out. Bigger than the Magnum at Cedar Point at the time. Pretty good for a little park unheard of to most.

You can have your bankrupt Six Flags you LOSER!

  • Comment removed

  • @darlingdino fastest and highest yes, but at 3,000 feet not the longest. If you met longest drop u r correct

  • @darlingdino Six Flags isnt Bankrupt anymore and who was that at?

  • Yeah they definitely didn't take the loops out because they were too "scary". Hundreds of coasters in the world make you go upside down some with out shoulder restraints. It was because the inversions were rough.

  • I've only been to Kennywood once, back in 1995'ish. I rode the original Steel Phantom and I remember it being very uncomfortable. I was only 14 and was a roller coaster fanatic, and I couldn't ride this one more than twice. I had to take some tylenol and rest after the second go round. I love loops, so I wish they would have just figured out how to make smoother loops. I'm going to need to take another trip up there, and check out the new Phantom.

  • lol i have the video this was taken from! i wanted to ride this soo bad and was so mad when i found out they took it down lol.

  • ive ridden the phantoms revenge alot its fun at first then it gets kinda boring wish when they changed it to the phantoms revenge they would have kept some loops in it at least one

  • I think it's a good thing they remade the ride. I've heard that the old Steel Phantom was so rough and intense it was unenjoyable for half the public. I prefer airtime hills and an unique, breathbusting double down rather than rough and seen before arrows inversions! But I respect all opinions.

  • You're right, I've rode both rides and the new phantom is the superior ride hand downs. The old ride just whipped the riders head back and forth and it just hurt. It was an AMAZING ride though. I miss it sometimes. there was something so thrilling about it. Maybe the fact that it felt like you got a concussion every time you rode it!

  • omg i never rode this and i lived in pittsburgh all my life....i was always too short i wish it was still there...

  • ahhh! the steel phantom looks so awesome! when i finally got tall enough to ride it, the phantoms revenge came out... =P i still love the Phantoms Revenge though.

and whoever is saying bad stuff bout Pittsburgh, stfu

  • Thanks so much for posting this! I rode this back in 97 when I went to visit family out in PA. I rode it at least 6 times that day. I LOVE that drop through the Thunderbolt!

I was pretty bummed to hear it was redesigned. I didn't mind getting knocked around. That's what older coasters do! It's part of the fun!

  • would so much rather have kept this than phantom's revenge!

  • @markazz218 me to i never even got to ride it i was to little then when i finally get tall enough they take it out

  • Phantoms revenge is a much more fun ride then when it was the Steel Phantom. That damn thing was poorly designed. I remember getting off and thinking I had sprained my neck. I think they had to change it for fear of lawsuit.

  • this ride looks so much better than the new one

  • You do not know how bad i want to ride this. And they got rid of it. D:

  • well your name deffinatly suits you. pittsburgh is one of my favorite cities and the steelers will kick your teams ass anyday.

  • yea 5 time superbowl champs, suck on that

  • ima tell ya'll somethin. steel phantom was the most legendaries coaster on the planet, and i miss it to death, but the revenge. wow!!!!!!!! kicked steel phantoms ass. revenge is top dog now.

  • I dunno i kinda liked the old one better, wish kennywood wouldn't have taken the loops out

  • Why did they take the loops out?

  • cause they hurt...

  • B/c people are tards and started suing for sore necks and shit. Someone always has to ruin the fun for everyone!

  • ik..stupid ppl now we have a shitty smooth coaster that is boring as hell

  • 6!!!!!!!!! 6 TIMES BABY WOOT! lol

i love the steeler and Pens..pirates suck ass

  • I miss the old loops. The ride was pretty rough but I've been on worse. I though taking the loops out was a big mistake. The old ride was better.

  • It was better this way with the flips

  • this is from an old ass roller coaster video. the screams are fake haha.

  • o crap my parents went on that 4 the 1st time nd my dad hates rollercosters hahah X)

  • holy crap it does thats much?!

    im going in 3 weeks

  • They took out all of the loops. The ride is faster and smoother now. It has a few nice camelbacks for added air time as well.

  • the steel phantom isnt there no more its now the phantoms revenge its the same but they took out the loops now it doesnt go upside down. i went today and rode it. =) Gotta Love it!

  • I don't understand how i got on the phantom bfor i did on the thunderbolt cause i was 2 short at the time. Like if u can get on the thunderbolt u can deifinetly get on the phantom. I don't kno u had to be like 48' to ride the phantom but u had 2 b taller then 48'to get on the thunderbolt. Like the thunderbolt doesn't seem as extreme as the phantom's revenge.

  • I was 2 young at the time to ride ths bfor it was destroyed. But it looked kool 2 ride. one of the girls was screaming bloody murder and sounded like sumone was getting killed or watever.

  • The old ride kicked ass they shouldn't have changed it.

  • The loops were removed because it was a very rough ride and people were getting hurt from it. Nothing serious, just very umcomfortable. It was the best ride in the park, but they had to destroy it. Then, when the time came, they decided to just remove part of it, put in a new hill, recolor and rename it. For a family style park, its still pretty extreme, and it still reaches about 70 before it goes under the Thunderbolt. The lift hill is 180 feet.

  • RCDB lists the lift height as 160ft with the second drop at 228ft with a top speed of 82mph. Morgan MFG did the new part of the ride and it's as smooth as glass but very short.

  • This was not a ride for wimps.

  • around 80-90

  • the people on the ride scream like there being murderd

  • what is the max speed on this?

  • At the bottom of the 2nd drop before the loop

  • Wow

you have footage of the original Steel Phantom (years before Youtube and mini cameras). Good job. I really miss this coaster and the loops it had. The Phantom revenge must be the ONLY steel coaster without a loop. I think Kennywood took out the loops because it was pretty rough and there were so many lawsuits.

Anyway, glad you have this lost footage :)

  • This was a poorly engineered ride from the start. Rode it once in 1994. It was the worst coaster in the park. Ed

  • I went on this with my father (I didn't want to go on it, but he did), and we both ended up with sore necks after getting off the ride.

  • i never got to ride this nd i was rlly mad

it looks alot funner then the phantoms revenge...

    =\

  • Yeah, the loops were out for whiplash. Everyone who says 'no nobody gets whiplash' that's not true. Whiplash is the most common deadly... thing... that happens in a theme park.

  • yea i kno wht you mean bout the whiplash..

cuz me nd my mom sat in the back seat of the thunderbolt nd i got whiplash...my neck really hurt after...
