Thank you for uploading the show, it needs to be on the net. I remember videotaping Dave's first show on CBS too. Too bad that tape is in some landfill somewhere by now!
It's weird...I had the same thought about this new set for Dave after he left NBC that I eventually had when Conan O'Brien, who had been in Dave's old studio for years, left for The Tonight Show. The set is too big. It looks nice...but late night always seems better to me when it's a little claustrophobic.
That was Calvert DeForest.... a comedian that Dave frequently had on until his death. He did a great tribute to him that you can find here on YouTube.
Larry "Bud" Melman....real name Calvert DeForest. Died in 2007....that guy was nuts. He would occasionally pop up on shows like Pee Wee's Playhouse too. But most people new him from the skits he did on Letterman.
how exciting....wish I was old enough to have watched these shows as they aired....and I also wish Dave put the same effort he put in his shows back then now
That's ridiculous. As if that was the turning point. I think he's gradually gotten a bit "soft" with age, as we all do (as our brains do), but after almost 20 years of doing the same job, I can bet you'd get a little lax at it.
Jay Leno said something very interesting a couple of weeks ago. He said that Dave was a "much better broadcaster" than he was, but that Leno himself was a "much better comedian." I'm a Dave guy, but I think Leno was probably right.
I used to worship this guy too, but he's become a warped left leaning kavetch. He should change his last name to Bitterman, because he never seems to be happy even when he is laughing through the gap in his front teeth.

Feel free to ignore anything you wish to ignore, what do I care, it doesn't change the fact that Letterman is a classless ass. Try Conan for a laugh you don't have to feel soiled over for having.

I totally understand you do not like the word worship, that is your perrogative. You seem sharp enough to understand that there are gradations in meaning between figurative and literal speech. One sometimes put things figuratively for effect not to be taken literally. I don't see, if you understand the difference, why my comment loses credibility. As a young man I thoroughly enjoyed Letterman's irreverence. Now he is just mean spirited and agenda driven. He's a bore. As in the Palin flap.
Later on, Alan Kalter took over as the announcer in 1995, if anyone can post Alan Kalter's debut announcer on the "Late Show with David Letterman", I be appreciate it.
To be fair, Letterman infamously cut Bill Hicks from an early Late Show appearance. And to Dave's credit, he had Hicks' mom on the show recently and they showed the whole routine uncut.
Amazing how good the first show turned out! Hasen't changed a bit! Well... Paul found his look. Didn't know he looked like that back in the days. Fun to see the first show :-)
this is awesome seein the old show again, I like the Sullivan intro, he's introducing "the Lettermen" a vocal group that's funny editing, I wonder who the "david" was?
David made the perfect move to CBS. Johnny Carson told him to do so. They weren't gonna give Dave The Tonight Show and he probably wouldn't be able to afford to buy the show from NBC. David Letterman is in a great place and has been for 15 years at CBS. He owns his show and The Late Late Show, he makes at least $40 million a year, and he can pick the guests he wants. Not just anyone famous like Jay tends to do. No dissing Jay, his show is great too, but David has more of Johnny Carson in him.
A joke that I still have going with friends to this day is that when Letterman moved from NBC to CBS, he ripped the Peacock's Eye out and used it for something new. *ducks tomatoes*
I was 13 and a big fan of Late Night when this aired. I remember waiting months for this show to air and unbelievably enthused when it did. He still, even at the stage the show is in, can make me laugh because i love his personality. When he retires it will feel like the death of a very close friend. I'm dreading it even now. Long Live The King Of Late Nights.
David stuck with tradition as like on Late Night, Dave's first guest is Bill Murray. David Letterman is the most powerful in Late Night. He is Johnny Carson, he's a great writer, interviewer. etc. Jay is great too. He is a professional too and he has made The Tonight Show really great but David's humor remidns me more of Johnny Carson's. Whereas Jay is more like Dennis Miller, conservative, more polished act, etc. David Letterman is the king though and I know Johnny would say that anyway.
There are so many things I wish I could do with my Dad, but I do also wish I could sit back and watch lettermen of Old with my Dad, late night like the old days. Carson, Lettermen and nothing else was like them.
TalkVid ! Thanks again for some great great stuff ! This is gonna be fun to watch. Hey, you don't have the weatherman clip when he congratulated the tropical storm on being upgraded to a hurricane do ya? My wife hasn't seen that.. Thanks for putting this together for us all!!
