The secret melody to Elgar's 'Enigma' Variations is 'Ein feste Burg' (A Mighty Fortress) by Martin Luther. This famous theme is quoted in the works of Elgar's favorite composers: J.S. Bach, Mendelssohn, Meyerbeer, and Wagner. There are various musical ciphers embedded in the Variations confirming the identities of both the hidden Principal Theme and the hidden Friend. Wonderful, such a wistful and melancholic piece of music and so well presented. It reminds me of a historical period marking the beginning of the end of European culture just prior to WW1.
This must have taken days to rehearse to such perfection from the conductor's masterful control, through the orchestra's brlliant feel, all the way to the recording crew, this would make Elgar proud.
This is of the top student orchestra at the Conservatory at the University of Cincinnati. Yes they do sound fantastic as they always do, I played in that orchestra a good deal while I attended school there.
Thank you nottravis28. Elgar's music is, at times, underestimated, and only the most talented can expose its brilliance. I just finished A Genius in the Family: An Intimate Memoir of Jacqueline du Pre and was captivated by it. Of course, her mastery of the Elgar Cello Concerto is a wonder to behold. I do not think it is an accident that Maestro placed the Enigma IX on You Tube, out of all the works he has surely conducted over the years.
Mesmerizing! Conductor's movements are fluid and he appears to connect with each section personally. The single-note sigh at the beginning...the fade at the end with hands and sound diminishing simultaneously. OMG. Will you marry me?
Indeed. I consider myself fortunate to live in the Worcestershire countryside (Malvern Hills) that were Elgar's inspiration for this piece. Beautifully played.
just wonderful. i love the restraint you showed - its so easy to overdo it and make it sound cheesy. the strings were superb and the ending divine. congratulations.
Wonderful. Perfect. I also agree with prokofiev24 - it's a much more sensitive interpretation than Barenboim's and a better tempo (slightly faster). Visually a very good, precise conducting style too. I would love to play under him. What is that jangly sound in the background though, almost like a triangle lol.
This sounds very good. Is it a professional group or a good amateur one? It's hard to tell from this short extract. Good intonation. Did you video Troyte and Dorabella by any chance? Shame you clipped W.N. - that's my favourite variation of the lot. How did the cellist cope with that nasty little solo?
This just goes to show the high quality of American orchestras, even those not well known. The tone and depth are very impressive. The Americans are leading the way in classical music. I wish my country(Canada) would follow this example.

Makes ME proud, and I'm not even English.

Seems odd. University of Cincinnati playing such an English tune. Not complaining at all.
I can't hear this without feeling a tingle.

I can't say I like it as much as I like the one of barenboim with the CSO, but I still like it alot.

Wonderful! This is my favorite Elgar piece. I always love hearing this with "Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus" during Christmas time.

Listening to this was like watching an eagle soar on the wind, spiralling higher until its silhouette is swallowed by the sunlight.

I agree with prokofiev24. Much better. Also, Barenboim's version was spoiled by using too many microphones and tweaking the trumpets too loud.

I premsume this is part of the performance where the whole Enigma variations is being performed. The bit before it is the end of the 8th variation.
andy4226uk 4 years ago
It's the previous variation (no. 8). Nimrod is from a longer piece called the Enigma Variations.
