In 1944 I was on leave from the RAF and heard RICHARD TAUBER sing at The EMPRESS THEATER in Brixton London it was during an Air raid and afterwards I met him in the basement of the theater he was a gentleman and it was an Honour to meet him he has one of the finest voices in his range never tried to reach a note above his level just marvelous control to compare him with others is ridiculous! He stands alone and should never be compared he is an ICON
..................with regards to Tauber "Flirting with the camera"....... this WAS for a movie, so what did you expect ragnaroekk? him to turn his back?
As I said, when listening to Tauber, compare him to no one! just enjoy 'as is'.
Tauber at his best!!! I love this song and to me, it's Tauber at his finest, that can only compare to, (my mothers fav song), 'Trees'.
Nothing comlicated here, just a fine, smooth voice thats a pure joy to listen to.
I know Tauber is not up there with Gigi, or Bjorling, but due to his variations, is so easy to listen to any time of the day, and your guaranteed to find a song for all.
The Best way to listen to Tauber, is not to compare him to anyone! Just listen to him 'as is'.
@DerryCummins It's all subjective taste of course. Yet if you heard either Gigli or Bjorling's renditions of certain arias & songs, & especially Lehar songs, then compared them To Tauber's, you might reconsider the idea that he was not fully their equal. Certainly Tauber lacked high C, but within that range he was just superb. There isn't a tenor in the world, then or now, who can bring a grin to my face like Tauber whenever he hits one of those fantastic Bb's!
I first heard Tauber when I was about 14 on the radio singing You are my Heart's delight ,one of his most famous songs written by Lehar. i cannot say he was the greatest tenor ever but his was the voice I loved best .Songs like The Whispering of the Vienna Woods ,the Blue Danube Waltz are enchanting. He was the essence of Old Vienna !
This flirting with the camera is some of the most tasteless ad disgusting I have ever seen. The singing is uncultured and the voice has a strong tremolo.I can now perfectly understand Karl Kraus who said about Tauber: "I have never seen something as pukeworthy as him".
@Ragnaroekk Like any other of the great tenors, Tauber's voice & style were distinctive & unique enough to polarize opinion. I can accept that he is not for you. But to suggest that his singing was uncultured, when he was world reknowned for his superb musicianship & enchanting lyricism, & his voice afflicted with tremolo when in fact it had perfect vibrato, - is so wide of the mark as to only invite ridicule of your comment.
62 years after his death, he is STILL beloved with good reason.
I like Tauber. He is a great tenor and he sings with his heart. I love listening him sing Schubert's Serenade. He does a great job. Great musician and great vocal chords to match.
Where ever did you find this? This is GREAT! Despite Tauber's goofy leering at the camera and the fact that he looks more like Harold Lloyd than Franz Schubert, it is an amazing little gem. A piece like this that we've all heard a million times (and often not done well) is given a new life by Tauber's uber distinctive voice and superb technique. His little effects don't bother me at all. A great musician. Although he looks better in his top hat and monocle than in this fright wig. Great post.
agree but love this clip. great piano playing and singing. harold lloyd would have the piano collapse after the song. ROGHARM or have glass and shatter the glass with his great voice.
Honestly I don't know what some peoples problem is with glissando. This is such a played out tune, I'm glad to hear somebody adding a little color to it. I thing Tauber does a beautiful job with it. Other than Bjoerling's carnege hall recording, this is my favorite to listen to.

God Almighty what schmaltz! Leaving aside the ridiculous Liberace channeling Groucho playing Schubert aspect of this vid, Tauber doesn't start one note on pitch. You need a couple of Dramamine to survive all that scooping without being sick.
Kind of charming in an weird sort of way. I think the schmaltz is intentional, and the quality of the recording (to my speakers) is not so good. I am dissappointed in the scooping too, though he is playing the piano, reading music ,and trying to act for the camera all at the same time. I enjoyed the performance anyway, kind of a sit at home late night after a drink charm. Good thing he picked one of the most beautiful songs ever
gtimny. Tauber was a superb musician & it shows here. The fact that he had the freedom to express himself by using rubato, enhances rather than diminishes the song. It is after all, a serenade, & would be diminished by an inferior musician who sings it to a metronome beat & is too 'precious'. Tauber's singing style is one of an incisive attack, - he was not given to slurring. Yet an instant rise to a note is also unmusical in singing, & he avoids this. His pitch is spot on, your criticism isn't.
what a wonderful voice, excellent tenor Tauber, here personifying Schubert himself, and with the most beautiful melody composed by that genius, and to think how many heavenly pages he left after his early death when he was 31 years old. his symphonies, his piano pieces, his lieder, his masses, I can't understand why these type of inmortal geniuses had to die in extreme poverty and so young, many of his wonderful pages were discovered after his death
Besides, he looks creepy. I half expect him to stop playing, advance towards the camera with his ominous smile, and say, in a ridiculous German accent "I vant to suck your blood".
Hi everyone. This video made me a member of this youtube community! He sings beautfully he is also a skillful pianist. I'm looking for the words in german. I have the score but I need the german words! Thanks! He makes a coloratoura at the end, but every singer can do that. He can justify it in the peace perfectly.
Yes, you're right, he has done a little improvisation at the end, but it's good and so is the entire piece, rare to see a singer also a top class pianist.
The recording is terrible regarding the sound quality, which is no wonder as it is a track from a 1933 (?) movie. But one can still hear the the warmth of Tauber's voice. He takes great liberties with the score and the text, but the way he does is convincing (and it is a movie, remember!, not a concert performance) and his articulation and phrasing display his quality as a great classical singer.

Although Tauber was an artistic singer, I cannot abide his basic vocal quality, which I find nasal and harsh. And the bleating vibrato is offputting. Ditto Helge Roswaenge, Josef Schmidt, and Jan Peerce.
Sam, I have been listening to Tauber since 1944. Sure some singers can equal or even surpass him in some songs but overall Tauber has a place in the great tenors of all time. If you do not like him - do not listen to him. I never ever listen to Mario Lanza because I do not like him, but I do not compare him with others.
My last comment was meant for Samurai9. Historiwa, listen to 'mario lanza sings ave maria'. What is it that you don't like in his voice? He may have done some tacky films, but his voice.. I love all the greats, Caruso, Bjorling, Gigi, Martinelli, Tauber etc. Lanza was a great tenor, and making his way back to the stage(Milan I believe) before he died. He was only 38!
Wonderful!! Thanks for this. I had an old uncle who died a couple of years ago who looked very much like Richard Tauber and also sung a lot of his songs as he played his piano, so this has brought back many memories.
I love this so much ;)

Was this taken from the film?
I agree that there is an uncanny similarity with the composer.
AS far as the comment about the "bawlers" is concerned; fair comment, but I don't think Herr Tauber tackled a full Chenier or Otello on stage :),
so Sr Del Monaco would be an unlikely Tamino...
Horses for courses. I love singing like that of Herr Tauber in arias and lieder like this, but hot blooded verismo has its place too.
