none if these meathods are cruel or inumane. most horse dont mind it. it helps the horse be calm because it is taking their mind off of the situation. if yall have ever had to restrain a horse then youll know it isnt that bad. and you NEVER leave the twitch on for long periods of time.
@afccapt07 Twitching a horse does not make it 'calm' They stand still simply to avoid having the thing around their gums/nose/ear being jerked on and causing more pain. Put a chain around your own nose and see how 'calm' you are. Horses who are calm don't strike, or try to trample you when they are 'calm.'
I disapprove period. The last vet who twitched my mare I ditched and got another. Restraint that uses force is pointless, stupid and outdated. We have gentle methods, it just takes a brave person to use their head instead of muscle. No one wants to take the time to be nice.
@nyzbii the problem is in a veterinary setting, sometimes twitching is the only way to keep the animal AND the person safe. Taking the time to 'be nice' is not always an option, depending on an emercency, or more likely some horses are only going to behave to their owners. I as a veterinary assistant am not willing to 'be brave' and get myself kicked. That wouldn't help the horse, the clinic, or the insurance company.

Poor technique--the twitch should never be left dangling over the wrist like that.
