Since when was there a definition of Jazz! Critics panned bebop and Miles Davis as well as Herbie Hancock for adding electronic elements to jazz music! Jazz is iso many different things you can't piegeonhole it into one style! The jazz of today is far removed from some of the jazz from the 50's!
Da tradition of jazz is also to move forward. Steve has studied with both Jackie Mclean and Anthony Braxton, as well as contemporary music composers. I think it's the Ableton staff who named the video "Jazz with Live and max/msp". I know Steve and he doesn't claim the word jazz for his work. @ Don Pohlino: just 'cause you don't like or understand something, that doesn't make it a bullshit.
@DonPohlino I'm not going to call it bullshit; most music has some degree of validity, but I was having a hard time finding any Jazz there. This is some kind of modern variation on European "art" music, a 21st century update of what they used to call "Third Stream" perhaps, but that in and of itself separates it very distinctly from real Jazz. (Yes, REAL jazz. Y'all know what that is, or *should*...) The bit at the end was kind of in a 70s-80s fusion vein, so OK, but the rest of that stuff...
@thatsmypeanuts That's a little dated as a definition, but I hear where you're coming from.
Here's *my* peanuts: Wayne Shorter--from ANY period, but let's start with the second classic Miles quintet out to, maybe, Atlantis. 'Gets no better. This stuff would not compare remotely favorably.
@MagMusic Actually, I was being sarcastic. I thought that was clear from how dogmatic my comment sounded: Jazz HAS to be this, HAS to be that.
For what it's worth, I love the second quintet also, but comparing electroacoustic new music w/ improvisatory elements to Miles Davis is a tad apples-to-oranges for my taste. I love Steve's music.
@murderbydeath222 This is the inevitable result of other people believing they are entitled to speak when they should respect their positions as visitors. But some people believe they have the right to define any and everything and that's when you get this. Nothing against the music, but I'm not sure Jazz is the proper "home" for what he was playing.
