Nope. It was a franken turret. From what we know Ratman was alive in the events of Portal 1 but this game has to take place at least a 100 years later since the facility has grown THAT thick of a plant habitat (whick I never got I mean there underground)  Or was it Ratman you refered to with ``he´´

Yes, plants can overtake abandoned buildings that fast, it happens in real life. Do you remember the end of Portal? The big boom? Water, dirt, seeds, etc. can get it through that hole. Then it's all a matter of time.
