@giotto0111 It wouldn't work, the sound comes from the formation and collapse of bubbles underwater. If it is not underwater it would make a little click sound.

@AceofDlamonds CORAL magazine would be the easiest for you to obtain that information. There are also many biologists that do research and a hit from a pistol will normally kill the mantis. However, I suppose it's the Goby that gives the Pistol the upper hand, obviously, there is no Goby here so maybe that was the Pistol down fall and it indeed came down to timing.

and you don't think a hit from the mantis will kill the pistol just as easily? the only difference is the mechanisms.....mantis shrimp actually use physical force.....while pistol uses indirect kinetic energy. There is much more room for the pistol to "miss" as in not hit with 100% force than the Mantis.

@morenoaguileramex Thats a hermit crab. They came with that free rocks i got from my friend. Before I put the rocks in my tank I put it in a bucket with water alot of salt and they call came out and I just dumped them in the refugium.

@romsoccer12 Then Dr. Roy is mistaken. Stomatopods are a type of crustacean distantly related to crabs, lobsters, and shrimp. Stomatopoda is the Order of the animal, just like Decapoda is the Order that covers crabs, lobsters, and shrimp.

Quick question. I'm thinking about getting a mantis shrimp next year. What kinda aquarium do I need (glass or plastic, since they can hit pretty hard). Can you pick it up without it crushing some fingers? What kinda food do you feed it (other than the occasional live crayfish or crab)?

the pistol shrimp has no chance no matter what. I have a pistol shrimp and i have never seen a crustacean of equal size to the pistol shrimp withstand a hit to the face (never tried it on my beloved mantis shrimp) If the mantis can survive that without being stunned it will realize what is happening (they are very smart) and will eventually learn to wait out of range until the pistol shrimp "fires" and then will jump in and hit him while he is "reloading"

note: by eventually i mean 4 hours ish

The mantis shrimp got shot in the face and it wandered off. I heard clicking from the pistol shrimp over night then the next day it was no where to be found. I suspected the mantis got it over night.

@romsoccer12 well the clicking noise that the pistol shrimp makes is actually a little air bubble it creates when it closes its claws so quicklly. The bubble's enough to break through glass :D.

actually it IS a crustacean [that is a stomAtopod]. Stomatopod is the class name given to mantis shrimp since they do not classify as a shrimp, crab or lobster. Can give you link if you want to check for yourself

@romsoccer12 Pistol Shrimp are extremely deadly. They shoot out a quick bubble that can stun. And for a millisecond, the heat in the bubble gets to the heat of the SUN.
