Watching 1080p on a 600p screen is utterly pointless anyway, but its nice to see theres a slight difference.
It should be able to run 720p easily when configured properly. So obviously have Linux or WinXP on it and configure VLC to use any form of hardware hooking of the Intel "GPU".
Simply opening the box and thinking thats ok is a giant mistake and a waste of your money. These things suck out of the box, hard.
Using the combination of Core AVC (codec) Haali Media Renderer and KMPlayer, I've managed to get my eee 1000H to play 1080p h264 media almost flawlessly. I was kind of surprised as last year I tried a pretty similar set up and it could only play 720!
1080p is fine for desktops or even laptops but on netbooks its playback is irrelevant, unless you were using video out to a 1080p monitor.
720p is probably the best bet, especially considering netbooks have the standard 1024x600 screen, anything more than 720p is a waste.
To be honest though on my netbook I prefer videos at 624x352 with 1024-1512kbps bitrate. they look great. Remember the screen is only 10" so you can get away with a lower resolution, especially with higher bitrate.
So if I were to buy this netbook, would it be able to play HD Youtube videos without a hitch? Thats the only thing holding me back from buying a netbook. Either this or I'm waiting for the Lenovo S12.
no netbook currently on the market, or upcomming ones with nVidia ION playback HD Youtube videos without being choppy, because although Adobe announced GPU-accelerated Versions of the Flashplayer, they aren't out yet.
So essentialy every netbook relies on the CPU to decode flash video, and since all Netbooks use either the in terms of speed virtualy identical N270/N280 or even the much slower Z520, no netbook will give smooth HD flash video until Adobe comes out with a new flash player plugin.
IF you want a netbook to play 1080p real well, you need want to hold off until the nvidia ion notebooks come on the market. The Ion GPU will use GPU acceleration which will allow even the puny ATOM CPU to run 1080 p material b/c of the GPU offload. If you already have one of these netbook you might want to check out CORE AVC codec, which is arguably the fastest software solution for playing HD videos.
CCCP is an embarrassment. Before this I ran XP codec pack and played 720p videos fairly well (and occassionally goes out of sync). Hearing that CCCP was supposedly better, I installed that too, and this time none of my 720p videos played well. All of them were out of sync for the whole duration.
Then I installed K-Lite Codec Pack, and that solved everything. It totally outclassed XP codec and CCCP by a mile. My 720p videos have never been out of sync on my EEE PC ever again. Clear, Sharp, fast
Just curious, how is video playback with 720p. I would figure that it would have some problems with 1080p video but honestly, there really should not be that much of a visual difference if you watched 720p on these little machines and it would be a lighter load for it to handle.
They play 720p nearly flawless, as you probably figured out. That's all I expected from one anyhow, since 1080p on a screen that isn't even 720p isn't gonna do me any good when I'm moving around.

I get really tired of idiots posting this kind of crap, you'd think they might just do a little research on how to run these machines instead of opening the box, and just switching it on. The 1000he is a gr8 little computer and runs netflix and DVd movies flawlessly.
The point wasn't to show web video or DVD playback, but 1080p HD video playback. Both of these machines are perfectly capable of playing standard definition video or web video just fine. Neither is really up to the task of handling 1080p video, but the 1000HE is *slightly* better at it than the 1000H.
awesome video! its nice to see what can be expected with n280 and this video effectivily demonstrates the increase in playability :-)
ive also created similar videos of dreamcastplayability on eee901 and put it on youtube. if i get the chance i will make a new dreamcast video with atom n280.

the point of videos like these is not to show that a machine live up to its specs... the point is to show how much further beyond its specs it can go :-)

How about just a regular DVD playback for a plane ride or something? And how is the full screen, even more choppy?

If you want you can use Youtube Downloader to download the MP4 file directly from youtube then play it inside an efficient player like KMP or MPC. :)

I get my 1000he tomorrow and I'll try it with the Combined Community Codec Pack and Media Player Classic. I'm pretty sure that would work flawlessly.

try VLC and also overclock H using eeectl. mine o/c up to 2041mhz stable with 2 gb 667mhz crucial ram. should run 720p smoothly.
HE can be o/c with setfsb. goes up to 1.9-2ghz

Did you used the normal high performence of 1.66 ghz at the 1000he or did you overlocked it to 1,75 with super high performance.???
If not, could you make the test once more...
Maybe the 1000he gets a little better?
MuKo18 2 years ago
Both models are running in Super High Performance mode, which means 1.75GHz on the 1000HE and 1.7GHz on the Eee PC 1000H.

Do the netbooks have 1 or 2 gigs of ram installed?

all netbooks has 1gb atm, you can most of the time upgrade it to 2gb.
sometimes only 1.5gb
