Dude, suck it up and buy sony vegas. It's awesome. You can even get a lower level version for less than 100 bucks. I used to use WMM, too, but it does crash like that randomly. I've had projects that use the same source video but for some reason, there's something about that particular project that crashes it. I don't think it's necessarily the source material. But anyways, Sony Vegas is more powerful and reliable.
But seriously, I hate people who say that. I don't even have a Mac. I have a PC. And I use Sony Vegas and it works great. But it probably costs a lot of money. I don't know how much it costs, my bro gave it to me. Movie Maker usually sucks.
It could be that WMM doesn't like the compression of the video files you included in your project. I'm guessing they're either DivX or XviD. One thing you could try is use WinFF to re-encode all your video files into WMV(windows media video) format. The reasoning behind this is that Movie Maker should support WMV by default rather than relying on some other codec to play video. Then you could just replace the video files you used with the WMV ones and see if that works.
The best thing to do is ger a new editor. I had wmm Crash on me a lot so i.got ulead and later vegas. Ulead would be the best for you. Its very simple and reliable. Contact me for a copy
Matthew, you have my sympathies. I tried making Windows Movie Maker videos and while I had some that work fine, there were some projects that would die/corrupt/ etc. My suggestion, if you are going to do it on Movie Maker, Make back up copies every time you finish a part.
I'd say try different software. If you still have problems, check your media from the top layer down...in fact, not a bad idea to copy to different media before you do anything.
I'd suggest just upgrading to a better movie program. I'd recommend Final Cut (I use it for my videos), but that's Mac only. Avid, Sony Vegas, and Adobe Premiere seem to be the big ones outside of Final Cut; if money's a problem you can try to get the lower end versions of them (e.g. Adobe Premiere Elements rather than the full Adobe Premiere).
I don't really have any useful advice concerning your question. However, I wanted to ask you, whilst performing a possible tech overhaul, to please do something about the volume in your videos. Normally, it seems like the volume of movie clips is quite low, while your voice is very loud in comparison. As a result, I basically have to sit there adjusting the volume back and forth between 3% and 100%, which can be distracting. Not sure how you might accopmlish this, but look into it if you can pls
I do not know what your video editor is, but if there's a newer version out, it might be a good idea to upgrade it. Also, check what is the format of the video and audio stream for the video clips inside their container. Sometimes converting them to other format might do the trick. It might even be a problem with the codec pack installed on you system. If you do have any codec pack installed and there's a chance it's behaving badly, uninstall it and get the latest version of k-lite mega.
I don't know if you've heard this already but if your using scenes from the movie you could uninstall the footage you have and reinstall, or get the footage from some where else. That is my suggestion, hope you get this issue fixed soon.
Dont worry about the delays. I think most of us, excluding the impatient and the trolls, are willing to wait a little while longer. If all else fails, maybe something can be cooked up to generate some funds for the new movie editor or whatever you need.
Worst case scenario - why not just release it with audio only? I don't know about anyone else, but I usually just listen anyway. If that works, at least you know it's simply a corrupted video element.
Oh, if you want to try out Vegas go ahead, but you'll have to take some time learning how to use it. Dunno why everyones recommending a $100 program.
WMMs not so bad as long as you're using an older XP version, the Vista version I tried would just freeze quicker then ice cubes, they really messed WMM up.
If you can I recommend using longer cuts as Movie Maker seriously does not like short clips, especially if the speed up or slow down effects are applied.
Another suggestion is to use an older copy of Movie Maker, one for the XP. I've tried Vistas movie maker and its much more glitchier and picker then the XPs.
I would say it could be a codec but your last review worked so I doubt its that.
Well, I am not a Windows guy, but in basic terms, run a disk repair application. Something like Norton. I know Macs come with such a program pre-installed. Microsoft, I would imagine, probably has something similar. Just let it run to repair any issues with your harddrive. If the problem persists, then my instinct would be to see if there's an update to your video editor, or try different editing software. You might be able to download a trial version of Adobe Premiere to tide you over.

edit in sony vegas since you have windows. If it's just this project, you probably have a corrupted file in it. Try replacing as many of them as you can. Take new snapshots etc. Try converting the video file, if you use any, in to another format (there are several good free programs for this) and use that file.
I actually thought to myself the other day, "huh, wonder what's up with that not being posted already?" Now I know. Very considerate of you Matt. Sorry about the technical problems, I can offer nothing but my sympathies.
Oddly enough I had this problem with the last video I uploaded. I guess it might have been because it was almost 30 mins long. But for me cutting it up into to 3 parts did the trick.
Have you tried cutting it up into like 5 mins long parts?
I suggest you cut this video in 2 parts and then start new project and merge them into 1 since you'll only have 2 edits and WMM won't fuck up this time.
Windows Movie Maker crashes all the time. The bigger the video the more likely it will crash. you have to save constantly in order to get it to maintain what you are doing. Again get Sony Vegas. There are ways to get it free it you look.

Sigh, the life of a busy internet reviewer. I'd wager that your computer won't stand for a classic like NCFOM being bashed. Which is the computer kind of being a dick, because you've got the right to give the movie an honest review, so your computer can go to hell.
Anyway, I still haven't decided whether to watch your review since I liked the movie so much, but I hope you get the problem sorted out.
Good luck Matthew and take as much time as you need! Part 1 was the best laugh I've had in a while...
My guess it has something to do with the video codec of the movie file (Old Country for old men) which your taking clips from. Try getting a different copy of the video... With a different codec... Take a look at the video file and see what it says, it might be Xvid, etc.
make friends with someone who has adobe premiere or avid lol...also did you use a digital copy or did you rip it off a dvd yourself? if you ripped it yourself try ripping it again as a different file type. You said that you tried to segment it so did it throw errors on every segment? or was it just when you tried to stitch them together afterward? because if it was the latter then its probably not the footage. if it can't export the segments it could be the video itself.
1. Make sure whatever pictures or video you are using is not super hi res. if your computer can't handle big files it might crash. Get smaller versions.
2. Try setting everything up again, but render only the audio. Then render the video only. Then go back and make a new project and import the 2 files. (video & audio)
3. Get Adobe Premiere. Any version! Windows movie maker is a horrible program to edit with. I've used Premiere 6.0 for years (it's old) and it works gr
Hey Matthew. Maybe your video editor hates No Country For Old Men as well and simply refuses to have anything to do with the film. Sorry man I had to get that comment in. I don't have any advice for you (I'm not very tech savy either) but I hope you resolve the problem. Good luck man.
Tech problems like this drive me bat shit crazy so I can empathize when something like this doesn't go your way. If all else fails, stagevu.com/video/asiktvgqsyxr there's always downloading the fucker even though I'm not sure how using a different "copy" of the movie will resolve this error.
That's what I use for my videos, it's almost identical to the fancy-ass macromedia professional thing. Try giving the data a run through that thing - hopefully the error won't crop up.
Let it freeze/crash out. Right-Click My Computer>>Manage>>Event viewer. Try to find the ''error'' under applications then double click it and see what it says is the "faulting module" to see if it tells you specifically what file is causing the error.
@confusedmatthew I know that person who said "get a mac" was probably annoying. I go to extreme lengths to avoid even touching macs and I fully appreciate your love for Windows. Having said that, Windows sucks dead donkey balls when it comes to video. (To Be Cont).
@confusedmatthew Multi-threading operating systems, like Windows, are great for almost all forms of computing. They present you with crap like this when they try to edit massive files, like those found in professional audio-visual work. AVID got so mad with Windows that they stopped support for Vista altogether. (End)
seriously, i can't believe you've been using Windows Movie Maker this whole time. Wow, lol, someone with your YouTube popularity.. I'm impressed! I gave up on WMM pretty quickly.
Also, Matthew, is your entire computer freezing or just the editor? If the computer's freezing, you should check the CPU/Motherboard/Videocard temp, check all your your disks for errors, check the system log for unusual errors, and run MemTest86+ to test all your RAM.
Sometimes dust build-up can cause overheating which leads to freezing.
My early vids were done on Movie Maker. It was HELL. All it ever did was freeze, crash, and corrupt my project files. I had to completely redo my Shitload of Fuck videos two or three times each before I finally got them to render.
Since then, I got Sony Vegas. MUCH better. I suggest you get that, or hell, ANYTHING but Windows Movie Maker.
1. Make sure any clips you import have the same frame rate as your project.
2. Reencode any clips you want to import using a free, loss-free codec like Lagarith. (Video editors sometimes choke on typical .wmv/.avi) . VirtualDub (free) is good for (re)encoding.
3. Use PCM (no compression) instead of MP3 for all audio in the clips.
All this is just for the temp clips you import into the project, you can export the video as whatever you want.
I had this problem once. I HATED IT SOOO MUCH, but think I have som advice for you Matt. It may take a while but but try cropping down the video to see if any of cips are cerupted. First start with half the project. find the middle of it and lalect all of the end or middle clips. After that delete them but DO NOT save. press save to my comptuer to see if it save it not that means something wrong with the othe half of the video. Keeep doing ths untiel you find what problem. Hopes this helps ya.
@ZeldaWolf2000 I'm sifting through all of them one by one as we speak. My suspicion so far is that it doesn't like my copy of the movie its self. I may have to spring for another copy if that is the case; which is a real kick in the teeth for me since I didn't even want ONE copy of No Country For Old Men. lol.
@confusedmatthew CM could you please stop ignoring me, and please talk with me threw messags one day I have waited for almost a year and am really big fan if you so deserve it, please????????????
@confusedmatthew You didn't just Netflix it out? You actually buy the copies of bad movies you hate so much? Man, that is dedication! Was a firing range involved with your Minority Report disc after you finished reviewing it?
@confusedmatthew maybe this time your views on the movie are sooooooo controversial that it's forced your computer to become sentient just so it can disagree and prevent you from posting the review
@confusedmatthew I sometimes experienced crashes with WMM when I used mp3s instead of wavs and any other movie formats than avi. That was on my old XP system. so I just work with avis and wavs only. might be a codec compatibility problem of some sort. Also I never bothered to install the windos media player which is implemented in WMM.
What file type do you have of the movie? That could be the problem. AVI or WAV are the best, assuming you're using the version of Movie Maker you showed in the video. I use that myself.
Thanks for the update, Matthew. Take all the time you need.
If you were working on the same project each time (meaning the same project file/folder), I would recommend creating a new project and shifting all your audio/video stuff to that one. To put it another way, it's the same project from your perspective, but a different one from the program's.
Hope you find that helpful, look forward to the rest of your review, good luck and peace.
@DarkLordVegeta Hey Vegeta I realy think CM`s Minority Report review was incredibily childish, immatire, mean, awfull, spitefull, obnoxius arogant snd petilant, swearing at someone and insulting someone for hsaving a diffeent opinion he personally finds incosistent and calling it irespinsible which really makes him a hypodrite for acting flabbergasted about Chase finding him irresponsible and being mad at him, and also for always acting like he respects others views!!!!!!! what do you think????
I'm having a similar problem on iMovie, but this might help (assuming you can do this on windows movie maker). Render everything you already have, it will turn what you've done into just a video file, add it to the window where rough footage is typically located , drag everything you got into a new project, and continue working on the review. Again, don't bother with this if you can't do it on Windows Movie Maker, but it will most likely help if you have that option.
Don't worry Matthew, I will TRY to speak for some of us when I say its okay to take as long as you need on this project. I'd rather you work on it at times where it would be convienient for you rather than us pester you all the time to do it.
On a helpfull side, I suggest just getting a different video editor, or it could just be one of the files not working correctly. Try switching out some of the video to see if the pics are the problem. Other than that, I have no idea what could be wrong.
Maybe you're computer just has good taste.

Or - The file is too big as No Country For Old Men is a long movie. Try breaking it into two smaller files.

Hey Matthew. Maybe your video editor hates No Country For Old Men as well and simply refuses to have anything to do with the film. Sorry man I had to get that comment in. I don't have any advice for you (I'm not very tech savy either) but I hope you resolve the problem. Good luck man.
MegaBeamish 10 months ago
Tech problems like this drive me bat shit crazy so I can empathize when something like this doesn't go your way. If all else fails, stagevu.com/video/asiktvgqsyxr there's always downloading the fucker even though I'm not sure how using a different "copy" of the movie will resolve this error.

Open Source Video Editor: Kdenlive
That's what I use for my videos, it's almost identical to the fancy-ass macromedia professional thing. Try giving the data a run through that thing - hopefully the error won't crop up.

Let it freeze/crash out. Right-Click My Computer>>Manage>>Event viewer. Try to find the ''error'' under applications then double click it and see what it says is the "faulting module" to see if it tells you specifically what file is causing the error.

@elitejammist thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! I'll give that a try!

@confusedmatthew Do you wanna try Sony Vegas?
truthhopelove 10 months ago
@confusedmatthew I know that person who said "get a mac" was probably annoying. I go to extreme lengths to avoid even touching macs and I fully appreciate your love for Windows. Having said that, Windows sucks dead donkey balls when it comes to video. (To Be Cont).
BritishCommentWriter 10 months ago
@confusedmatthew Multi-threading operating systems, like Windows, are great for almost all forms of computing. They present you with crap like this when they try to edit massive files, like those found in professional audio-visual work. AVID got so mad with Windows that they stopped support for Vista altogether. (End)
BritishCommentWriter 10 months ago
seriously, i can't believe you've been using Windows Movie Maker this whole time.

Gammu 10 months ago
Matthew, you just need to go to the apple store and ask for the macbook pro with final cut express. No more freeze errors.

(finishes watching vid) Seriously, Matthew; Sony Vegas 10 Pro TPB. Google it.

Your computer is a fan of No Country For Old Men.
theFFVIguy 10 months ago
Tips that spring to mind:
Good luck.

ZeldaWolf2000 10 months ago
@ZeldaWolf2000 I'm sifting through all of them one by one as we speak. My suspicion so far is that it doesn't like my copy of the movie its self. I may have to spring for another copy if that is the case; which is a real kick in the teeth for me since I didn't even want ONE copy of No Country For Old Men. lol.

@confusedmatthew CM could you please stop ignoring me, and please talk with me threw messags one day I have waited for almost a year and am really big fan if you so deserve it, please????????????

@confusedmatthew Well you could torrent the movie, it would be OK since you already own the movie.

@confusedmatthew You didn't just Netflix it out? You actually buy the copies of bad movies you hate so much? Man, that is dedication! Was a firing range involved with your Minority Report disc after you finished reviewing it?
Killermike2178 10 months ago
@confusedmatthew maybe this time your views on the movie are sooooooo controversial that it's forced your computer to become sentient just so it can disagree and prevent you from posting the review
255ad 10 months ago
@confusedmatthew I sometimes experienced crashes with WMM when I used mp3s instead of wavs and any other movie formats than avi. That was on my old XP system. so I just work with avis and wavs only. might be a codec compatibility problem of some sort. Also I never bothered to install the windos media player which is implemented in WMM.
Skoenner 10 months ago
@confusedmatthew
What file type do you have of the movie? That could be the problem. AVI or WAV are the best, assuming you're using the version of Movie Maker you showed in the video. I use that myself.
electricboa 10 months ago
The Lion King Fans hacked your computer and don't want you to review another shitty movie that they love! XD
ETLyrics1 10 months ago
Thanks for the update, Matthew. Take all the time you need.
If you were working on the same project each time (meaning the same project file/folder), I would recommend creating a new project and shifting all your audio/video stuff to that one. To put it another way, it's the same project from your perspective, but a different one from the program's.
Hope you find that helpful, look forward to the rest of your review, good luck and peace.

@DarkLordVegeta Hey Vegeta I realy think CM`s Minority Report review was incredibily childish, immatire, mean, awfull, spitefull, obnoxius arogant snd petilant, swearing at someone and insulting someone for hsaving a diffeent opinion he personally finds incosistent and calling it irespinsible which really makes him a hypodrite for acting flabbergasted about Chase finding him irresponsible and being mad at him, and also for always acting like he respects others views!!!!!!! what do you think????

please dont waste 400 dollars on a program like Adobe Premiere. That is for actually films for students in film Schools or budding film makers.
If you do want another program YouTube or Google a way to "crack" it.
That when you download it (usually a few gig) then put a file in or generate a keypin for the program .
but dont waste money on it.
woodsy1234567890 10 months ago
I'm having a similar problem on iMovie, but this might help (assuming you can do this on windows movie maker). Render everything you already have, it will turn what you've done into just a video file, add it to the window where rough footage is typically located , drag everything you got into a new project, and continue working on the review. Again, don't bother with this if you can't do it on Windows Movie Maker, but it will most likely help if you have that option.
Greenknight1138 10 months ago
Don't worry Matthew, I will TRY to speak for some of us when I say its okay to take as long as you need on this project. I'd rather you work on it at times where it would be convienient for you rather than us pester you all the time to do it.
On a helpfull side, I suggest just getting a different video editor, or it could just be one of the files not working correctly. Try switching out some of the video to see if the pics are the problem. Other than that, I have no idea what could be wrong.
JohnIsUber247 10 months ago
Aww. this happened to me a lot before. I just copied the files to a disk and borrowed a friend's computer. It worked after all.
Can't wait to see the review, Matthew. I hope this works out :))
