You can only play as infected in versus. You can system link it though if you know anybody with the game.

If you have PC version of L4D you can get a mod and write some like "Excex infected" in console and be infected in Single player. can link download if you want and have it for PC.

@ghostgory all you need is 2 controllers and select one infected and the other a survivor but it will make it splitscreen but that is not a problem though if you have pc this will not work it is only for xbox 360 hope this helps:)

Quite possibly to confuse other teams. If they think you're a smoker, they probably won't be worried about you pouncing them, or doing the massive claw damage.
