@levanyzzuf Stupid? to some perhaps but its only a regional joke. From reports of all who knew him Ben Johnson was one of the most genuine people you would ever meet. The boy left Oklahoma but Oklahoma never left the boy. His awwwwww shucks charm help make him endearing. Its sad that no more are like him in Hollywood.
@missourigal82 Did you not notice the time link I placed in my last post? I was suggesting that Sally Kellerman's comment was stupid. Indeed, it is completely nonsensical and factually incorrect. As recently as 1968, all five nominees in this category were being nominated for the first time. This was also the case in 1965, and no doubt many other years prior. Also, it stands to reason that the first year the award was given out, all five nominees were first-timers. It's a no-brainer.
Ben didn't have to act, he WAS Sam the Lion! I love how he very pointedly mentioned that Polly Platt was *still* Peter Bogdanavich's wife, even though the director dumped her mid-shoot for young Cybill Shepherd.
Many thought Jeff should have won. Perhaps. But it may have weighed very heavy on his career. Instead he was able to carve a unique career. As for Ben-- it was well deserved for a long career in supporting roles. A great man. Sadly he passed while doing the sequel to TERMS OF ENDEARMENT. Maybe it would've been another Oscar.
Here's a triva note: that teenage boy with waist length hair sitting 2 seats from Ben? The one with braces? It's future 70'S teen idol Shaun Cassidy!!!
Richard Harris seemed happier than Ben Johnson was.

My favourite role played by BEN JOHNSON was Melvin Purvis in "Dillinger" by John Milius.

Harris' enthusiasm was genuine: he and Ben had worked together on MAJOR DUNDEE.

Now that's what I'd like to see. The presenters showing excitement for the winner. The winner was even more gracious. A lovely speech.

All the nominees were there. That was very rare in the late 60s-early 70s.
