My socks are Oscar Worthy. Must be these days. However, not sure of how "Extraordinary" it actually is.
"Look here! A normal sight for millions of people in northern countries! Lots of snow and blurred spotlights in the distance behind all the frozen water that is falling from the skies!"
Yeah, it's good and all, but what's about Academy shit? Nonsense.
I don't like Roger Ebert--he claims his personal views (as we can see giving 2 out of 4 to Kubrick's masterpiece Full Metal Jacket) as the only acceptable truth, and thinks one he likes is the best thing ever. Apparently this one got his attention and for no reason it gets praise like never before.
not to look too far into this but i think this kind of shows how after all the technology and advances the human race has made we still cannot conquer mother nature (i.e. the cars getting stuck, streets and street signs covered, etc) mother nature will always come out on top
I actually really love the chopped up scenes at the end. The different instances of people struggling in the snow and eventually succeeding was pretty special to me.
It's cool enough, and certainly brought back some fond memories of living in the north, but I don't understand how this video is as popular as it is. And apparently no one else does either, considering the comments made on here. Nicely made, very lovely imagery, decently edited, but Academy? Let's be reasonable, shall we?
Not excellent. An untold number of 20-something-year-olds with DSLR cameras make videos identical to this one on a daily basis and have never once been considered for an Academy Award. And there's a reason for that.
I love how people see right through the plot... Yes, there is a plot. Snow comes, people panic, Cars get stuck, but people triumph. This is excellent.
ok.. If I had an HD camera and walked outside into a snow storm and filmed street signs and people walking around doing shit I just might upload something that looks a lot like this. Mr. Ebert, you not having a jaw has had a serious impact on your brain.. Stop talking.. if you can even to that.
The first time I watched it I didn't think about it that much and just enjoyed it's playfulness. When you watch it with no music there is such a sense of urgency, it's quite scary. It opens as if we, the audience, are the camera and creep towards a terrible disaster. We stay as the main character and observe the storm as a monster that transforms and engulfs the city. We later witness the struggle of the cites citizens fight their way out. Beginning, middle, end. Great use of color, Kurosawa!
Ok, I am not a person to comment on videos, but how did you shoot this without destroying your camera and lenses? I went out last night to shoot the snow, I live in PA and I almost destroyed my lens. And how on earth did you switch lenses in such conditions? You need a medal for just that.
I really don't mean to "hate" or something but how Roget Ebet found this film ? There are beautiful shots indeed but you can see far better ones than that all around youtube or vimeo...
While this is a nicely shot, well made video, I personally don't understand the huge hype (and by hype I mean Roget Ebert saying that this should win an Academy Award for best short film).
It's a great video, but it is just a series of largely unconnected sequences in a blizzard. Not Academy Award-worthy.
@callycap3 really? that's all you saw? i saw a complete story, it started with a small snow fall, peaceful and pleasant, turning into a problem with it growing larger and trapping peoples cars and such, ending with the snow melting on the window. it was really deep and well thought out if you ask me, but hey art is defined by the observer, whatever you make of it, that's what it is to you.
@callycap3 An argument that only belittles another opinion is useless. e.i "Your comment is just a a series of letters and words, largely unconnected with a sense of art." What made your comment popular is how youtubers saw something in it.
Mr. Ebert, saw something in the short film that he thinks is Academy award-worthy, and I agree.
The camera movement is critical on sending the viewer right into the blizzard. Its cuts are accurate. Its almost as if the shots are building pieces of a big puzzle.
Love the static shots and the use of black & white and color. The film definitely gives you a sense of the blizzard escalating to the point of overwhelming everything: the buildings, cars, people, animals. I think the music does help the film, but the imagery is still beautifully shot. The transition from black & white to colors and the transition from things to people is done nicely. I find the black transitions a bit distracting at times, not sure why they're included, sense of time passing
Man in a blizzard is a stunning display of living in the natural world. In the First few scenes the storyteller immerses the audience with a variety of shots to unveil the city.. As the time of day steadily changes so too does the city itself, or the "men" and the "blizzard." The use of static shots intertwined by moving shots progressively advances the narrative to convey mans difficulty of living in a blizzard, and how they collaborate with one another in order to survive.
What kind of camera was he using? A Canon? I read somewhere it was a Canon video camera, which might mean it's a 5DMKII.
I think this film was a nice exercise, I would've liked to have seen the dog's face, less cars and more people- of the few people you might find on the streets during a blizzard. But I love the snow (being from Australia, it's wonderful to see) and as a photographer I think it's interesting to ppl playing with these cameras and filming a kind of photographic storyboard.

A blizzard is not defined by the amount of snow but by the wind that blows the snow that is falling/has fallen. This is just gorgeous but I felt like it was a car commercial. Was it?
You know, the first time I watch it I was like "oh, please, I have a 7D, I have a tripod, I have snow...." what's the bid deal.... But I keep watching it. So I guess I have been hypnotized by it :)
There is a poetry to the movement of this film, and the haunting music sounds like both the howling wind and slow plodding treds in snow mounds. Those who disdain and compare this well-made film with their own feeble attempts, well, delude yourselves. This one's lovely in many, many respects.
I thought it was a Volskwagen commercial. I love how the description is "extraordinary film"... Bergman and Kubrick must be rolling over their graves. I'm going out tomorrow when it snows with my tripod... Oscar for me too?
Me tinks Mr. Stuart (or Mr. Stuarts trust fund creating parents) sent Mr. Ebert a nice check. Thats why. I agree. Its a nice short - no doubt. But IMHO, it's not Oscar quality.
New Yorkers always seem to think that when they get a lot of snow, they are the only ones in the entire history of the world who have ever had a blizzard.
No denying there was some good shots; the close ups with macro-diopters were interesting.
But what really should be heralded by Roger Ebert, besides Stuart's stamina to be in a storm, is the choice of music. And more improtantly how important music is in film!!!
Especially this one.
Without the music there is nothing here but esoteric shots of the city during a snow storm.
As seen on Good.is; Roger Ebert has declared that Idiot with a Tripod, shot by an amateur filmmaker named Jamie Stuart during this week's snowstorm, should win the Academy Award for best live-action short subject. His reasoning is as follows: (1) Because of its wonderful quality. (2) Because of its role as homage. It is inspired by Dziga Vertov's 1929 silent classic "Man With a Movie Camera." (3) Because it represents an almost unbelievable technical proficiency.
I especially like this pace - like looking out from under your hood every once in a while. The scenery changes but the white-out remains constant. I think of drifting off into a long solitary walk with just my thoughts and the quiet sound of snow flakes falling.
I think the amount of thumbs down on this video is misleading. Most people aren't going to give it a thumbs down because it's not bad. However, I think that if a survey was held asking these same viewers whether or not the film deservs an Oscar, it would have considerably more thumbs down than up. It's a fine film, but far from great, and not thought provoking in the least.
@demilovovatofan1 yea umm obviously you have never been up north in Canada... Colorado is nothing compared to that and plus i live like 500 km away from there north, to, you know nothing about Canadian weather
the last minute of this is amazing, the editing is brilliant, everything stuck becomes unstuck, the cutting back and forwards of the stuck cars, dog, motorbike etc, the last minute says everything about this videographer....that he's an artist, that he held those shots to begin with, I mean I'd have probably filmed clips of those scenes if I'd have seen them but to film each from start to finish showing the outcome just brilliant.
OH LOOK AT ME I'M CANADIAN HEAVY SNOW TO ME IS LIKE AIR BLABLABLA
Then why is it that when I walked out to my local ATM wearing a t-shirt (i.e. no winter jacket on) here in Calgary when it was around -15, people were looking at me as if I had just landed in my UFO? I had to flip some idiot off as he was driving by. So stop showing off, Canadians.
@PanekPL yea for real.....im Canadian, and i think that people saying stuff like "this is a wednesday to us" just feeds into the stereotype that to be honest, a lot of American people think is true, that Canada is just a frozen tundra and everyone lives in like igloos and shit. And it's still considered a blizzard in Canada because of the high winds and snow and sleet. Just goes to show that there are idiots in all cultures and countries
@bb0ypants what are you talking about? we dont live in igloos but we are frozen for most of our year and the summer is usually dominated by cold rain and the spring snows more than the winter. the only area where this doesnt happen is vancouver. its a beautiful country we live in but its cold. thats a fact not a stereo type.
@fearloathing420 what are you talking about? the summer it gets hot, and not dominated by cold rains. and it doesnt snow more in spring than in the winters...well it usually doesnt but it did last year lol..and by last year i mean dec 2009 and on. And what you said about Vancouver is wrong. Ontario doesn't have what you said. And the igloo things was just an example of how people believe in things that are absolutely wrong. The country is beautiful, yes, but its not always cold, that was my point
love how the guy thought he was gonna get around town with his fucking scooter on that day what a dumass and pick up ur dog u dum bitch fcking let it sit there in the cold!! just watching it like a retard
As a Canadian myself (one who grew up in Saskatoon which never had school snow days unless it was hailing baseballs and -50c without the windchill), you guys should give the guy a break. Most of the states don't have the preparations in place for that much snow like we do because they don't expect that much snow... Like we do. The video's well done. Quit with the semantics.
@neoblast1 the point of this video is that no matter how cold or harsh the weather is, we are man enough to go through it and keep on moving.. but basically, for us canadians.. this is just.. nothing..we don't even need to be man ourselves.. its just nothing.. -__-
No word of a lie, up here in Canada you'll still find people riding their bicycles in this weather. I'm proud to be one of them. Also, here in Winnipeg, the slurpee consumer capital, you'll spot plenty of people carrying a slurpee in all weather.
THIS IS A BLIZZARD?!?! CMON! I've seen worse weather in my freezer! As a Canadian I cant even take my snowdogs out in this... They will barely reach the exit of my igloo.

Shot with a 7D nice! I'd love to see the original HD file output. Excellent video.

I think the amount of thumbs down on this video is misleading. Most people aren't going to give it a thumbs down because it's not bad. However, I think that if a survey was held asking these same viewers whether or not the film deservs an Oscar, it would have considerably more thumbs down than up. It's a fine film, but far from great, and not thought provoking in the least.

the last minute of this is amazing, the editing is brilliant, everything stuck becomes unstuck, the cutting back and forwards of the stuck cars, dog, motorbike etc, the last minute says everything about this videographer....that he's an artist, that he held those shots to begin with, I mean I'd have probably filmed clips of those scenes if I'd have seen them but to film each from start to finish showing the outcome just brilliant.

18" of snow in NYC is nothin' to sneeze at, despite how much it snows in "America-lite".. ;)

PanekPL 1 year ago
@PanekPL yea for real.....im Canadian, and i think that people saying stuff like "this is a wednesday to us" just feeds into the stereotype that to be honest, a lot of American people think is true, that Canada is just a frozen tundra and everyone lives in like igloos and shit. And it's still considered a blizzard in Canada because of the high winds and snow and sleet. Just goes to show that there are idiots in all cultures and countries
bb0ypants 1 year ago
@bb0ypants what are you talking about? we dont live in igloos but we are frozen for most of our year and the summer is usually dominated by cold rain and the spring snows more than the winter. the only area where this doesnt happen is vancouver. its a beautiful country we live in but its cold. thats a fact not a stereo type.
fearloathing420 1 year ago
@fearloathing420 what are you talking about? the summer it gets hot, and not dominated by cold rains. and it doesnt snow more in spring than in the winters...well it usually doesnt but it did last year lol..and by last year i mean dec 2009 and on. And what you said about Vancouver is wrong. Ontario doesn't have what you said. And the igloo things was just an example of how people believe in things that are absolutely wrong. The country is beautiful, yes, but its not always cold, that was my point

if there was a real "blizzard" you movie would be a 3:35 minute long white screen.
Made4DBZ33 1 year ago
As a Canadian myself (one who grew up in Saskatoon which never had school snow days unless it was hailing baseballs and -50c without the windchill), you guys should give the guy a break. Most of the states don't have the preparations in place for that much snow like we do because they don't expect that much snow... Like we do. The video's well done. Quit with the semantics.
LeftOfToday 1 year ago
canadians call it an average hourly snow fall.
haha

Is it just me, or should the guy on the moped be shot?
I didn't like the video, but I also didn't dislike the video.
The music fit the video rather well...I'll give it that.

yes in Canada we call this winter. In minnesota it means time to go icefishing. In Alberta a chinook is coming

hmmm ok... theres snow, theres people, theres car, theres dog, theres grandpa on a moped, theres some emotional music...now, the point of this?
neoblast1 1 year ago
@neoblast1 To waste your fucking time.
counterclockwise123 1 year ago
@neoblast1 the point of this video is that no matter how cold or harsh the weather is, we are man enough to go through it and keep on moving.. but basically, for us canadians.. this is just.. nothing..we don't even need to be man ourselves.. its just nothing.. -__-

OddeyeDL 1 year ago
No word of a lie, up here in Canada you'll still find people riding their bicycles in this weather. I'm proud to be one of them. Also, here in Winnipeg, the slurpee consumer capital, you'll spot plenty of people carrying a slurpee in all weather.
