Jocwalk - They are all good at their instruments. They work well together. They have a good balance of letting different people step out in front and are responsive to each other's playing. The backup is varied in texture. Only a little "showing off." As this song shows, they use diverse styles. Even with traditional styles, different songs have different vibes. Good stage presence. As you mention, their singer is good (understatement). It makes for a band that is great.
Is there a fiddle player out there who could please explain to me exactly what she is doing around 1:50 (that rhythm thing) and how can I learn how to do it? Many thanks!
I love The Cherryholmes.. It is far more talent compared to the obnoxious/repetitive rap music which is so popular.. I looked up bluegrass bands back in 2003 or 2004 and stumbled upon these great musicians.. I need to see them live...
Please don't blast me but I have a question. Is the appeal their talent or the novelty of the family thing? I say that because the mandolin is average, the fiddle is below average (not in the same league as Andy Leftwich, Hunter Berry or Michael Cleveland), the guitaris pretty good but doesn't compare to guys like Josh Williams or Cody Kilby, both in their mid-20's. The female vocalist is good. I'm not ripping them. I'm just trying to be objective in comparing them to other bluegrass bands.
i think both. they don't go by "cherryholmes family band" because there is indeed a novelty attached to family bands that they believe could make listeners not take them seriously. but most can't deny their talent. a personal tragedy transformed them from a once non-musical family into a recipient of IBMAs entertainer of the year in 6 short years. i think the age of the kids is also a factor because all of them were under 15 at the start. this video just isn't a great display of their talent.
Well, buddy, I understand your view here, but I think if you tried to pick up one of those instruments, it may "appear" harder than you may think. The Cherryholmes are very good, and their pros defenitely outnumber their flaws.
You have a good point there Jocwalk. They are good musicians though, of course they're not the best, but they do have some amount of skill. And I would say the fact that they're a family has a certain amount of appeal. Considering the divorce rate in the US, it is cool to see a family out there playing fun music.
How on earth can you call her fiddling "below average"?? Her sound is absolutely brilliant! And you can't compare fiddle players like that anyway - that's just your personal opinion. Every other individual will have a different view. No point comparing good music!
"Considering the divorce rate in the US, it is cool to see a family out there playing fun music" Ditto, and a bigger Amen for your concern of this ever-increasing tragedy. I love this famous quotation; "what God has joined togeather let not man put asunder" The problem is that God, for all intents and purposes, is left Out!" Oh yeah, the CherryHolmes for me is "mostly" about Cia's voice plus that Cherry red lipstick! i think they have a great energy!
that just totally made my day! As a birthday present to myself last November I got myself a miniDVD camcorder, didn't like it, and traded it for that exact camera. I haven't gotten a real good chance to use it yet, though. Now I can't wait to take it to festivals this summer and try'er out! If my new videos come out anything like yours..wow! =)
Cherryholmes are one of the most amazing musical stories ever. The whole family getting so good in such a short time is astounding. Thanks for posting this!
nice!
