Do you exclude areas from bluring? how many steps needs the blur for this quality, I would like to implement a vfx like this for mobile gpus via glsl es, but they aren't powerfull enough for complex per pixel ops. A raymarcher was possible (using distance fields) on such devices including your ao ideas, which aren't thus expensive
