@thewildestkitty The "blackface" was a spontaneous idea of TACO on the set at that time, a hommage to the famous singer and entertainer Al Jolson, whom he greatly admired and who was also known as a famous "Blackface actor" of the 1920s! MTV had problems with it because they feared it might offend the Black American community!
You would have to be stupid to think the black faces were related to racism, he was from Indonesia! people just like to get offended without doing any research or even thinking. sometimes you just let stuff go even if it was racist, it was over 20 years ago, jeez
@RoCoMANAGEMENT really thats crazy, ive loved this song ever since i was a kid, do you mind if i ask what he thought about the black face paint controversy? i always thought it was ridiculous and was curious what he thought.
@whitearab2 Taco never understood the decades of discussion at all, because the blackfaces in the video had nothing to do with racism in the furthest as far as he was concerned. Actually it was just a spontaneous idea on the set at that time, a hommage to the singer and entertainer Al Jolson, whom he greatly admired and who was also known as a famous "Blackface actor" of the 1920s!
@xXRavenJayGrayXx IT'S A WALKING STICK! Why do people keep calling it a light saber? Why the hell would he have a light saber? A walking stick on the other fits right in with the lyrics, "Come let's mix where Rockefellers walk with sticks or umbrellas in their mitts."
I don't know why people were so touchy back then? There are "Mammy" bits in this video that I wouldn't have even noticed or been offended about. :p He wouldn't be able to get away with that in this day and age but I know that this is the least offensive video I've ever seen. :)
@CelesteK You are perfectly right! I never understood the decades of discussion at all, because the blackfaces in the video had nothing to do with racism in the furthest as far as Taco was concerned. @RoCoMANAGEMENT You're welcome. Culture Club did the same thing for their Do You Really Want To Hurt Me video and it garnered the same kind of negative publicity. Oh you can't have that in your video. I never would have thought of it as being racist because I was too young to even know what that term meant? But now that I look at it I don't see anything that's racist about it.
Puttin' On The Prom... Heard Taco's song the evening of Thursday, May 14, 1998. The night of my senior prom. Played Puttin' On The Ritz again and again while dressing. Felt so Taco in my blue pinstripe button down shirt, tie, and black slacks. Even bought a pair of black socks for the occasion. I was Puttin' On The Ritz. Was until I realized I never purchased shoes. Had to chose boots or sneakers. Oh, well. At least the accompanying music was ritzy.
