@Jorgelicious1: Canada also played a very large role in the liberation. Canadian troops were responsible for liberating the crucial port at Antwerp, Belgium. Without that success, the entire Allied invasion might have failed for lack of supplies. Canada was also responsible for securing most of the coastline of Northwest Europe. You might be surprised to learn that 100,000 British, American, Polish, and Free French troops were under the command of First Canadian Army in Holland.
In hindsight the Alies should have just sat back and let the Russians do all the hard work. At the end the could have marched int Berlin just in time for the Cold war.

Also in 1926, the Balfour Declaration stated that Canada, and other ex-colonies were: "equal in status, in no way subordinate one to another in any aspect of their domestic or external affairs, though united by common allegiance to the Crown, and freely associated as members of the British Commonwealth of Nations"

@chrismallyon Not saying it was only because of the US that the Allies won WW2, but without our Lend-Lease loans, the supplies given to the British to fight Hitler back, the most likely thing to happen would be that Britain would have lost. Not to mention if you did still manage to save Britain, the rest of europe would have still been in controll by the Axis. Also Japan would have easily taken Asia without U.S supplying China or bombing Japan

@MrDrewpweiner Dude, not just any beach. Juno was by far the most dangerous one. It was totally flat, except for the barbed wire, and after about 200 feet is ended in a 40 foot high cement wall. It is a credit to the Canadian forces that it was taken at all.

However the reason the British couldn't open a 2nd front straight away was because they had just got destroyed in France. During the evacuation of Dunkirk they lost nearly all their heavy equipment, it would have been nigh on impossible to relaunch an amphibious assault so soon.

If the British lost North Africa then the oil fields would be in Axis hands

im 17, im a american and i have tremendous respect for the heroic men that had more guts than any teenager today to land on d-day knowing that they might not return to there loved ones. i tear up knowing that a soldier died on D-Day gave up his life so he could begin mine. The wars key points were a lot of things:
Great Britain standing tall and strong.
France and it's resistance liberating Paris, providing a beacon of hope for west. Europe.
America defeating the Japanese by themselves basically and playing a major role in Europe, liberating France and the west.
The USSR withstanding Germany's constant onslaught and pushing them back with valor, notably at Stalingrad.
Kudos to all countries for doing their best to free Europe.

Without that success, the entire Allied invasion might have failed for lack of supplies. Canada was also responsible for securing most of the coastline of Northwest Europe. You might be surprised to learn that 100,000 British, American, Polish, and Free French troops were under the command of First Canadian Army in Holland.

@chrismallyon Not saying it was only because of the US that the Allies won WW2, but without our Lend-Lease loans, the supplies given to the British to fight Hitler back, the most likely thing to happen would be that Britain would have lost. Not to mention if you did still manage to save Britain, the rest of europe would have still been in controll by the Axis. Also Japan would have easily taken Asia without U.S supplying China or bombing Japan

@MrDrewpweiner Dude, not just any beach. Juno was by far the most dangerous one. It was totally flat, except for the barbed wire, and after about 200 feet is ended in a 40 foot high cement wall. It is a credit to the Canadian forces that it was taken at all.

What's not widely acknowledged about the D-Day invasion is that Canadian troops, despite comprising only 10% of the invasion force, were first of any Allied troops to reach their initial D-Day objectives. Juno Beach was said to be second only to Omaha Beach in terms of difficulty.

@jferr49 actually recent evidence and research done on the issue of the Holocaust and specifically the eastern front shows that the Wehrmacht was very much involved in the slaughter of Poles, Jews, Gypsies, Gays and others of slavic descent. While the SS and the einsatzgruppen were the primary parties responsible for the mass murder, units of the Wehrmacht and several officers knew and participated in it as well. None were completely innocent.

Why bother negotiating a demarcation line when you can have it all! And Also...if you think the Russian military was So great...I would have assumed you would have come up with a better plan than charge the masses towards the enemy...masses of troops, masses of tanks, masses of planes. If you did not have such a large population which your commanders deamed 'expendable,' then you would not have survived any war versus the superior armor and doctrine of Germany, just as you would not have survived a conflict versus the allies afterwards if that occured.

@SuperGoodman44 First of all no-one can deny the fact that the titanic struggle of WW2 was fought between the Wehrmacht & the Red Army. Soviet losses cannot even be compared to the Western Allies. However the reason the British couldn't open a 2nd front straight away was because they had just got destroyed in France. During the evacuation of Dunkirk they lost nearly all their heavy equipment, it would have been nigh on impossible to relaunch an amphibious assault so soon.

@SuperGoodman44 Remember at this early stage in 1940 Germany & Russia were still not at war. They had only just finished carving up Poland after signing the non-agression pact. France had surrendered and Britain was left to fight alone because not even the U.S. was involved yet. The reason then that the British had to contend North Africa first was because of the Italians launching an attack there in June 1940. If the British lost North Africa then the oil fields would be in Axis hands

In fact if you read Heinz Guderian's memoirs you'll see he noted North Africa as being a defining moment in the war. In his view if the Germans had attacked in conjunction with the Italians in 1940 then they could have secured a vital victory.

im 17, im a american and i have tremendous respect for the heroic men that had more guts than any teenager today to land on d-day knowing that they might not return to there loved ones. i tear up knowing that a soldier died on D-Day gave up his life so he could begin mine.
