@ladyattis Participatory democracy is at the heart of the 1st Amendment to the Constitution of the US. The 'right to petition' clause doesn't mean simply that you have the right to send complaint letters. It means you have the right to participate in all aspects of civil govt.
In fact, Thomas Jefferson intended to create a political system in which everyone could become "an acting member of the common government, transacting in person a great portion of its rights and duties."

@PostSurgeOperative Ben Franklin once said democracy is two wolves and a sheep deciding on what's for dinner. Bill of rights and the constitution aren't rights that the govt gave us, they are rights that the government can't take away. I could be wrong, but I think the Jefferson Memorial is public property, so freedom of expression should be allowed, they weren't going to cause a riot with their dancing...

@thebest Courtrooms are public property, yet 'freedom of speech' is not an affirmative defense against a contempt of court charge.
Freedom of expression is protected by the 1st Amendment to the Constitution, WITH THE EXCEPTIONS OF obscenity, defamation, incitement to riot, fighting words, harassment, privileged communications, trade secrets, classified material, copyright, patents, military conduct, commercial speech such as advertising, and TIME, PLACE, and MANNER restrictions. (emphasis mine)

@PostSurgeOperative well if you want to go strictly by the law then it is legal in the state of Arkansas to beat your wife once a week. It is also legal in the state of California to hit your wife with a leather belt no wider than 3 inches, unless the wife consents to a bigger belt. If I would do this in one of these states and showed you the law would you find me not guilty? Right and wrong have nothing to do with legal and illegal.

@thebest3526 Not a single example that you cite there is in any way relevant to the 1st Amendment, nor does it in any way relate to my previous comments.
If you want to bring a pickle to a gunfight, or speculate on the price of tea in China, feel free. However, I fail to see how any of that addresses, refutes, or in any way relates to the facts I asserted regarding the 1st Amendment to the Constitution of the US.
Get back to me when you have something more intelligent to say on this subject.

If you think that people dancing quietly deserve to be put in prison then in most people's eyes you are in the wrong, and this govt gets away with what it does because of ppl like you saying that the law is the law and it shouldn't be broken no matter how unjust or wrong it is. When the Osama was dead rally in front of the white house happened there were many drunks and pot smokers there yet not one arrest.

As a person who registered as a Democrat in order to primary out a lot of the Bush-appeasers and Obama-groupies, I approach the tea-party with heavy skepticism. Far too often the tea-parties end up having their idea of "fiscal responsibility" being cut everything Democrat and missing the whole social side of libertarianism. The first wave of Tea-party candidates look a lot like Bush republicans, in some cases even more than Obama does.

Tea Party Express is basically California NECONS, with a few Nevada NEOCONS as well. The Tea Party Express III was here is in St. Louis, and was one big music show and tent revival for flag, military and nationalism. I am truly sorry to see them here, without the proper bonafides...some that run back to Ollie North.

There is a group of people who think that as soon as an officer informs you that he will do with you whatever he pleases, and proceeds to do to you whatever, that he has every right to do anything he wants and as soon as you resist, you deserve a clubbing. Police, and by extension the State, own you.
To be fair, many of those people speak from effect: you shouldn't resist because the officer will use (unjustified) force. They don't think: you shouldn't resist because the officer owns you.

That is why the Supreme Court can say they can donate as much as they want to political campaigns. The part about the "rights" being created for this is my opinion, but it is fact that these "rights" are being use for just that. See documentary: The Corporation. I don't make the laws.
