Yoga in the West has been severed from its Eastern philosophy. This includes the Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, the Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita etc. There is a code of doctrine that accompanies the physical practice. There are mental and spiritual disciplines. Who cares right? Take what you want. Trash the "integral" rest? Commercialization and cultural re-appropriation has turned yoga into a "trend," which leads to "18 million" cookie cutouts who aren't interested in efficacy. Intention is all.
@asana1973 i agree with you about Yoga being a trend in the West. While the mental and spiritual discipline is not a requirement, it is still being preached heavily in the places where i have practiced. Also one of the teachers teach the class while speaking Sanskrit, which is nice to the ears. I know what u mean about the cookie cutouts. A lot of people are coming to Yoga as an alternative to going to the gym, and not really worried too much about anything other than the physical aspect.
I agree with connerburnham. My input on American yogis is that the majority of them are doing yoga as an exercise and are not taught the spiritual side.
The best thing we can do for the planet is work on our own enlightenment. By meditating, the fluctuations and modifications of our mind are dissolved into their origins, resulting in oneness consciousness (Yoga.) Our clear, or clearer, consciousness can then radiate into the collective consciousness and bring about profound change. One enlightened yogi meditating in a cave could have more impact than millions running around trying to "save" the planet, if that's even possible.
Rod Stryker is completely right. We could have a positive impact. Each class of yoga students collectively.. As small groups we could be a large group of positive change.. This really would put meaning to our 'consciousness'... Lets each go to our class and suggest something, a small fundraise, an environmental concern, a petition, look up Amnesty International for causes. TED talks for ideas, Doctors Without Borders always need support! £50 can change a life for forever! Do it. Shall we?!
I hear ya!
