Freshman math or high school math often deal with only numbers. As you go into more advanced math, ppl generalize to arbitary cases. Thus, grad students, postdocs and profs use *letters* and *symbols* to represent **any** number.
You can be a great mathematician but you can suck at teaching maths, you can be a great mathmatician and you can be also good at teaching it or you can be not such an excellent mathmatican and you can be good at influancing and teaching maths to other people, so you mr jasondh22 don't have any right to judge the intellegence of this professor.
As a math guy myself, I will criticize this professor and other professors by stating that even though he proves himself to be educated, he does nothing to show me that he is actually smart. Smart meaning that he is able not only to prove to others that he can think, but also teach those people how to think about math. Reciting a piece of theory one reads from a textbook (as many math profs do) is not smart!

Great explanation. Very true.

@birmingham1010 Advanced math often has nothing to do with numbers, in terms of its subject

There are at least three 1s and two 2s on the board.

@KillahCracka If there were numbers you would call it engineering, certainly not math ;P
