why is it that so many people refer to god as something outside of themselves, I am not a christian however I do believe that god is within us, as we are within god. There is no distance between because we are god.

Everyone creates their own personal reality, some people allow others to create a large part of their reality because they are unaware of who they really are. I cannot "fix" it so you can win the lotto, that is your reality not mine. If your "intentions" are to proove a point then you will miss the mark every time.

When I was younger I thought similar to you: Going within my own mind, creating my own reality, mediating for hours on end. I even went to India and lived in an Ashram to follow my Guru etc. So Ive been there done that.

speaking of discernment, I have a friend i was just reunited with, who by everything I can see, truly desires the truth according to God...He was a Christan most of his life, and then ran into a very sharp Jewish apologist which shook his faith immensely. He seems officially unsure what he believes- generally references himself as a deist. besides prayer- any books? or webistes- apologists that deal more specifically with Judaism, instead of the usual counter protestantism ones?

Great conferences! The road to hell is of course paved with good or well intentioned desires. St Alphonsus stated that good desires and zeal are completely essential for attaining sanctity, but they certainly must be accompanied with practical resolutions and much prayer (especially mental prayer).

We are all called to chasity. Do you mean abstinence? If so, we must pray to know what God wants from us, our own wishes aside. When we discern that calling, we ask for the fortitude to carry it out. Peace replaces frustration. Ask to desire holiness. Even if you aren't inclined, live as Christ wishes. Remain steadfast, as the Evil One is not easily uprooted. Even married persons can have sins of impurity. Married persons must live chaste, too. It is a narrow path we walk.

He talks about "even Mary" -- Magdelene after her conversion, became chaste, and lived as a virgin. Could this mean there is hope for me, who has sinned and was sinned against? Because I DO very much desire the virtue, through the priest who helped me get there first, but then now, because God has helped through grace to stay that way? Is there truly HOPE for ME??? Oh, how my soul would SING to have that HOPE in purity and FAITH!!!! Thanks be to God for this priest!

Yes, there is hope for you and for all of us. Father/St. Thomas said, you must desire it, you must desire it, you must desire it. Your own words are, "...I DO very much desire the virture".

So... Go to Mass as often as you can. The Mass is the greatest prayer that there is, and the shortest way to heaven.

Oblationem: I just happened to have come back to the computer to work on homework, and saw your post to me. THANK YOU! I DO so very much desire it, desire it, desire it: to live chaste, and re-find/refine myself (therefore example it for my kids and their friends --) sexual chastity and purity. I DO go to daily mass, and I am on my knees frequently, since I left my abusive marriage. I hope, like Rita and Elizabeth Seton, to find my way to a monastery some day SOON! He's saying you're saved from your sins by your own effort instead of faith alone. I "want" to be pure has no power to overcome temptation. Only believing that the rewards of purity are greater than the immediate pleasures of sin AND that it is worth waiting for this reward.

Our desire is directly related to and comes from our belief that God's purity is better than sinful pleasure. It is faith alone in God's promises that saves us. No effort on our part, just believe.

If one takes the 'faith alone' line of thinking, one would most likely never get out of or stay away from a sinful life. One needs to have faith, but sometimes one needs to work very hard at getting out of and staying away from sin. Father said you must challenge yourself and form good habits, and to be a Saint, you must desire it, you must desire it, you must desire it.
