I don't think they are controversial...these photos are composites...I am also a photographer and they don't really hang a baby in a hammock or place them in bowls with legs and arms hanging out, these are composed of two photos combined.
I think the poster was confused about these being "conroversial". These babies are actually SLEEPING. The controversial pics are the ones of babies "BORN SLEEPING" aka, dead. I did have a baby who was born sleeping and I am forever grateful to the photographer who came in and took pics of her. Pictures of our little angels keeps them "real" as once gone, nobody ever wants to talk about them anymore or acknowledge that they ever existed.
I don't know where some of you people came to the conclusion that these babies are dead. I know this photographer and she takes amazing pictures of newborns. Any of the poses where the babies head is propped up or hanging in a sling were supported by a spotter and then the hands were photo shopped out. This photographer is very particular about safety.
And how is this controversial? They're not dead...DUH. They're ASLEEP. I'm a newborn photographer and believe me, we take the utmost care in protecting the babies we photograph. That means everything from trimming our nails so we don't scratch baby, to using assistants to hold baby and then Photoshopping their hands out to create a composite image. That is what any of the "controversial" images are made of. If you Google "newborn photography safety," you'll see how these shots are created.
for those who say it's a safety issue... most of these are composites, someone was holding the baby's head or body in position to keep the baby completely safe, and their hands were edited out later.
The only troubling thing I find in some of these pictures (baby hanging in the stork basket) are the people who think that they are capable enough to go and take similar ones of their own, not knowing that the baby was not posed like that on it's own.
I agree, I dont see anything wrong at all with these pictures. Theyre not exploitive, or dangerous. I cant imagine the parents or the photographer...or anyone in the vacinity would allow it to happen if it were. And youre correct, the danger lays within people trying to do these pictures at home. If anyone could do this...her picts, and anne gettys wouldnt be so famous.

@vanderwoodsen90 The hanging ones are the controversial ones.....the baby could be in danger. Unless you see the set up...they usually look more scary than they are (mom's and lot's of cushions underneath or someone holding them and then photoshopped out.
Im 35 weeks and 4 days pregnant with no 4, I would love to take some lovely nice photos of my own baby, when my baby arrives, love taking pictures of my own children since they were babies.
I remember taking my newborn daughter to have a pic made in 1988 they made me wake her up or they wouldnot take a pic .I have these horrible pics of her screaming her head off ...... I would have much rather had these ...... :(
@Treemeadow when babies are in the womb they are contorted in so many different ways. so them being outside the womb is no different. they are capable of having extreme flexibility
In the womb they have a thick layer of amniotic fluid and their mother's skin to protect them. Why do they say "support the neck" when holding a baby? The womb is extremely different from outside.
Their necks break easily and they suffocate even more easily. Thats why SIDS is such a big deal.
I think the pictures are great. Whats the controversy, babies look dead? Stop being pussies and have to argue about everything to make you feel you have a purpose. Don't like don't watch. Great photos!
These are actually all from my home photo album. These are all kids taken from strollers that I photographed before I proceeded to eat them. I would eat adults but baby meat is so sweet and succulent, and tender when grilled.
Some people may find this upsetting because they have lost a baby. For those that are saying they don't look dead, have you ever seen your dead child lying in a casket? I have. I've seen my 3 month old son lying in a casket. That's the last memory I have of him. It can be upsetting to see pictures like this. So, before bashing someone that might say the babies look dead, why not stop and wonder why they are upset by that and think before posting. Showing a little empathy can go a long way.

I took unpro pics of my daughter in some poses such as these( I am a crocheter) So I make a really cute bright pink hat for my daughter with a big pompom on the top and it was beautiful. it just takes some time to get them in the posses.
LOL, how is it possible to pose a baby after sleep, when mine feel asleep anytime I moved her I would be greeted with a harsh cry as to say: HEY MOM! What do you think your doing D:< Im comfy there! They look real none the less :)

the little bowls and small objects the babies are put on/in is just a way to emhpasize the smallness in the baby.. we need something to relate to in the photo, or it´s difficult to get how small they really are.. the photos are really cool, except maybe for some that looked uncomfortable or unsafe for the baby

im a photographer, and getting shots like these are near impossible, its a huge skill, and the baby has to be photographed in the first 2 weeks for it to work. any later than that and they will not stay asleep as easy! :) these photos are gorgous!
Raver does amazing work. I'm not sure what's controversial? These babies are adorable and the work is inspired. These people aren't making their babies "dolls or items" or putting them in "distorted" poses. Through a slow and very delicate process, they are making memories that the family will share for a lifetime. The key to successful newborn session is making sure the baby is comfortable, supported, and cared for at all moments. If any of these babies were uncomfortable, you'd see it.
i wish i was as flexible as those babies look, one of them have there leg next to there head and theyre sleeping like nothings wrong lol, babies are cool
I am a photographer that specializes in newborns and most of my models sleep the whole time. It is a very long process for me because I want to keep mommy and the baby comfy the whole time. The baby has breaks for feedings, etc. These images are absolutely amazing. People that view these as controversal do not have children. They don't know what it is like to go in at night and watch their new baby sleeping and think to themselves...how lucky am I to be the mommy or daddy of this perfect baby!

Babies are wonderful and that is why some of us react and find it so strange that photo sessions can bereave the babies from that natural beauty. have any of you ever dealt with a newborn? they're like ragdolls.. they don't give a crap how you position them or what clothes you put on them. they're tired. they'll sleep through it..and its not hurting the baby. its simply something people like doing..its frggen cute too. i miss when my daughter was a newborn. they are amazing.

I can't understand why these are controversial. They may not all be to my personal liking, being that I'm not real fond of some of the silly hats, but otherwise they're just sleeping baby portraits. The "controversy" was most likely due to it being a really REALLY slow day for 'real' news.

so dumb! They lived this way for 9 months or so! They are very comfortable in these poses and actually feel safer this way, that's why doctors swaddle them super tight, not only for the cold but they like it that way. Anyways for those who think this is not ART, whatever. This IS ART and i totally love it! I'm a baby photographer myself.
I just don't understand the fuss. No harm no foul. If I don't like the way you smile in your portrait thats my problem not yours. So why interject your opinion on someone else's photos. These pictures are beautiful! Those of you who think these babies look contorted and 'dead' are ridiculous! Newborns generally sleep in the fetal position until they are a couple weeks old, and sleep most of the time. These pictures are simply capturing the natural beauty of the baby.

I have seen gorgeous pics when they are just babies and not like in this photosession above. One exception though and that is the very first one with a small baby in his dads ( I suppose) arms.

@nmaster13 First question: NO!! Second question about Moses: YES!! But how could you compare a cartoon with children? They are used in a commercial context that is repulsive and they are not cute at all in these photos. They just look strange and weird. So I keep on separating cartoons and human beings in real life.
Newborns shoots are done within one to two weeks after birth, when infants still naturally like to curl up in the fetal position ect. The rooms are keep nice and warm and the infants are fed just before a photo shoot so they are happy little campers. All of you who think they look cold and lifeless or ugly certainly don't enjoy the natural beauty of an infant in their first days of life. This is what an infant does, eats and sleeps. A few props here and there make wonderful newborn pics!
I agree, the popular look nowadays are trying to get the babies to look as cold and lifeless as possible. The photographer could have picked cuter babies, but those are rare. The majority look like aliens when they're newborns, so I don't understand why everyone keeps saying "Aw, so cute!" A puppy is cute, not a newborn human child.
Thank God! I am not the only one who think this is awful, A newborn baby, filled with life and what is made of him/her? A lifeless dead "thing" without clothes like an animal but the silly winterhat seems to be mandatory. A newborn is a miracle to his/hers parents and if they look like aliens or not I don´t know but they look awful on these pics. And their distorted strange body positions are weird and grotesque.

Strange kind of fashion where babies are supposed to look as unhuman as possible. Their bodies are kind of distorted and the angles are strange but I suppose this is a smart business strategy. They don´t look cute but weird except for the last smiling one in a bag. I suppose the photographers make a lot of money and if it make parents happy to watch their babies look dead so why not. No one gets hurt....

These photos reminds me of a photo from my grandmothers childhood where they had a photo of her baby sister lying dead and dressed for funeral. I am not joking but they took those photos in the beginning of the 20th century and these babies look dead. They really do and I can find much cuter photos of babies where they are crying, yawning and whatever is better than these naked preborn-like photos. They look scary! And babies are so cute....when they look alive

These are actually all from my home photo album. These are all kids taken from strollers that I photographed before I proceeded to eat them. I would eat adults but baby meat is so sweet and succulent, and tender when grilled.

Some people may find this upsetting because they have lost a baby. For those that are saying they don't look dead, have you ever seen your dead child lying in a casket? I have. I've seen my 3 month old son lying in a casket. That's the last memory I have of him. It can be upsetting to see pictures like this. So, before bashing someone that might say the babies look dead, why not stop and wonder why they are upset by that and think before posting. Showing a little empathy can go a long way.

there posed omg lol sorry i didnt read any comments except the one above. But the newborns don't move as much. I took unpro pics of my daughter in some poses such as these( I am a crocheter) So I make a really cute bright pink hat for my daughter with a big pompom on the top and it was beautiful. it just takes some time to get them in the posses.

the little bowls and small objects the babies are put on/in is just a way to emhpasize the smallness in the baby.. we need something to relate to in the photo, or it´s difficult to get how small they really are.. the photos are really cool, except maybe for some that looked uncomfortable or unsafe for the baby

im a photographer, and getting shots like these are near impossible, its a huge skill, and the baby has to be photographed in the first 2 weeks for it to work. any later than that and they will not stay asleep as easy! :) these photos are gorgous!

Raver does amazing work. I'm not sure what's controversial? These babies are adorable and the work is inspired. These people aren't making their babies "dolls or items" or putting them in "distorted" poses. Through a slow and very delicate process, they are making memories that the family will share for a lifetime. The key to successful newborn session is making sure the baby is comfortable, supported, and cared for at all moments. If any of these babies were uncomfortable, you'd see it.

I am a photographer that specializes in newborns and most of my models sleep the whole time. It is a very long process for me because I want to keep mommy and the baby comfy the whole time. The baby has breaks for feedings, etc. These images are absolutely amazing. People that view these as controversal do not have children. They don't know what it is like to go in at night and watch their new baby sleeping and think to themselves...how lucky am I to be the mommy or daddy of this perfect baby!

Babies are wonderful and that is why some of us react and find it so strange that photo sessions can bereave the babies from that natural beauty. have any of you ever dealt with a newborn? they're like ragdolls.. they don't give a crap how you position them or what clothes you put on them. they're tired. they'll sleep through it..and its not hurting the baby. its simply something people like doing..its frggen cute too. i miss when my daughter was a newborn. they are amazing.

I can't understand why these are controversial. They may not all be to my personal liking, being that I'm not real fond of some of the silly hats, but otherwise they're just sleeping baby portraits. The "controversy" was most likely due to it being a really REALLY slow day for 'real' news.

Apparently a lot of people hre think babies are standing up in the momy's tummy -_-
so dumb! They lived this way for 9 months or so! They are very comfortable in these poses and actually feel safer this way, that's why doctors swaddle them super tight, not only for the cold but they like it that way. Anyways for those who think this is not ART, whatever. This IS ART and i totally love it! I'm a baby photographer myself.

I just don't understand the fuss. No harm no foul. If I don't like the way you smile in your portrait thats my problem not yours. So why interject your opinion on someone else's photos. These pictures are beautiful! Those of you who think these babies look contorted and 'dead' are ridiculous! Newborns generally sleep in the fetal position until they are a couple weeks old, and sleep most of the time. These pictures are simply capturing the natural beauty of the baby.
I had a baby three months ago and got newborn pictures taken of him. Do you want to know what he did during the shoot? he SLEPT!!!!! Do you want me to wake up my baby to make him look more 'alive'??? Good Lord...

@farmerswife4life Did you put him in a bowl, put on silly hats ( for winteruse) or maybe you wrapped him looking like a christmas gift? Why do that when they are beautiful by nature. I have seen gorgeous pics when they are just babies and not like in this photosession above. One exception though and that is the very first one with a small baby in his dads ( I suppose) arms.

@wendawhite Actually they are sometimes wearing silly hats or wings and I don´t know any babies born with hats or wings or even cravattes. They are naked and they are persons to be hold in someone´s arms instead of being put in china or whatever. You put food on china, things in boxes and animals in baskets but babies are supposed to be held and respected and that is why some of us react.

Newborns shoots are done within one to two weeks after birth, when infants still naturally like to curl up in the fetal position ect. The rooms are keep nice and warm and the infants are fed just before a photo shoot so they are happy little campers. All of you who think they look cold and lifeless or ugly certainly don't enjoy the natural beauty of an infant in their first days of life. This is what an infant does, eats and sleeps. A few props here and there make wonderful newborn pics!

I agree, the popular look nowadays are trying to get the babies to look as cold and lifeless as possible. The photographer could have picked cuter babies, but those are rare. The majority look like aliens when they're newborns, so I don't understand why everyone keeps saying "Aw, so cute!" A puppy is cute, not a newborn human child.

Thank God! I am not the only one who think this is awful, A newborn baby, filled with life and what is made of him/her? A lifeless dead "thing" without clothes like an animal but the silly winterhat seems to be mandatory. A newborn is a miracle to his/hers parents and if they look like aliens or not I don´t know but they look awful on these pics. And their distorted strange body positions are weird and grotesque.

Strange kind of fashion where babies are supposed to look as unhuman as possible. Their bodies are kind of distorted and the angles are strange but I suppose this is a smart business strategy. They don´t look cute but weird except for the last smiling one in a bag. I suppose the photographers make a lot of money and if it make parents happy to watch their babies look dead so why not. No one gets hurt....

Babies are sweet human beings and not some kind of items where you earn money on grotesque arrangements. It is both insulting and gross!

@Tuvadog Just guessing...I don't think you've ever been around a newborn child? They don't look silly being naked, it's not like their genitals are showing or anything and the hats are cute. This is just an art form (not saying the children are mere props, they are just the object of the photo). The babies look peaceful and natural and if you and the other commenters think they look dead and grotesque, then you are sick people. I do agree that the positions are awkward, but again, it's art!

@Tuvadog Their parents and the photographer have bereaved the kids their humanity and the babies are pieces of something dead but pleasantly quiet and fulfilling their purpose. to earn money for someone else. They wear silly hats and it reminds me of animals in a circus or ridiculed dogs with clothes all to make their parents "proud". A baby is a miracle and something to respect and cherish and you know what, this business is disrespectful to the babies and very tasteless.

@Tuvadog I agree with you about the lack of good taste and respect in these photos. I saw recently a wonderful video where the baby was just a newborn baby held in his dad´s arms. No silly hats and idiotic bowls or boxes, or even put on plates, cloth or whatever. I just saw this beautiful newborn baby being itself and in his dad´s arm. So I know what you mean with your comments.

I saw another video with a dad and a newborn baby and THAT was natural and very beautiful moments captured by a sensitive respectful photographer. The newborn´s are miraculous in themselves and don´t need bowls or silly hats.

These photos reminds me of a photo from my grandmothers childhood where they had a photo of her baby sister lying dead and dressed for funeral. I am not joking but they took those photos in the beginning of the 20th century and these babies look dead. They really do and I can find much cuter photos of babies where they are crying, yawning and whatever is better than these naked preborn-like photos. They look scary! And babies are so cute....when they look alive
