@bettsa15 It's a program for youth (18 & under)...there are a lot of different parts of it (everything from horses to livestock to cooking and sewing and so on) and you can choose which part you want to do. For the horse project, there are horse shows and other opportunities available for the members. It's just supposed to be an educational program to encourage kids to get involved in something, although the aspects can vary by state.
Did none of them have a crop for encouragement over these fences when the horses refused? But, maybe they would have gotten crop happy had they had one...
@DallasFreak3 So you've NEVER had a bad jump or, heaven forbid, a bad class? These are the bloopers. Some of these horses/riders had successful rounds with just one "bad" fence, and that's what I showed on video. Some did have an all-out bad round...but there were only a few that I would say really weren't prepared (and even then, maybe they normally did great at home and just had a meltdown here). A lot of these bloopers are just simple, ordinary refusals...the kind every beginner has.
@DallasFreak3 actually maggie its not. because these kind of things just happened to you with dallas, at a past show, and did that mean you weren't good enough to jump!? NO. it meant you had a bad day, and so did they, they are clearly good riders.
@LoveMyZora Most of the districts here don't offer jumping, because it's not that popular where I live (hence the reason we had so few really good h/j riders/horses). It's a non-qualifying class; anyone can show in it at State regardless of if you showed at District. So for a lot of these horses/riders, it WAS their first time showing over fences and/or showing in an indoor.
wow 4-H needs some help. its like this in our region's 4-h too. seriously need more training before showing. like a lot. this is why i love eventing. you kinda have to know what you are doing or else things could get ugly(er).
@nico4887 I don't think any of our district or county shows (for the counties that have them) offer any jumping classes. I know my district doesn't. Speed events and judged rail classes (Western Pleasure in particular) are huge here--lots of kids that also show NBHA, AQHA, etc. (even some that go to Congress/Youth World). Jumping isn't really big here, even outside of 4-H...there are a handful, but not as many as in other areas. So most of these kids probably never showed over fences before :).
@232CMack - According to your other comment, you've been a trainer for 25 years, but according to your channel, you're only 20 years old. And according to both your comments, you don't seem to realize that even the best horses and riders (and therefore certainly the beginner level that you see at a 4-H show) make mistakes. If you were an experienced trainer, you'd know that everyone has a bad ride occasionally. This is a blooper video. It doesn't mean there weren't plenty of good rides.
@jumpthemoon15 I'm sure they are just some 10 year old trying to put their two sense in and make themselves seem smart, when really they just make a fool of themselves.
this is why you don't try to learn to jump with 4-H. most of the time the kids are put on unsuitable horses and taught by unqualified trainers. the result (as the video clearly show) are horrifying.
The big black gelding from Rankin was at my trainer's barn for a few months :D My mare's stall was right beside his. He's a 3 year old Percheron X TB...that was the first course he'd ever jumped :) I was signed up, but I decided my horse needed a bit more schooling before I jumped him at 4-H. I wanted our round to be perfect and not sloppy like some of these.
Which barn/trainer were/are you at? I liked that horse, he did pretty well--you could tell he was green, but his rider knew how to handle him and he made a good effort.
@jumpthemoon15 I ride at Don Martin's in Brandon. And yes, he did pretty well for being young and inexperienced. Don said they came to him about a month before State and asked if he could get him jumping like that before the show xD I love Don, he's awesome :)
That's where I keep my horse now :). I had him at home forever, but when I moved because of my job, I moved him, too. I think that black horse is still there (that's why I asked--wasn't sure how long he's been there, and I've never seen him get ridden, so I wasn't positive it's the same horse). I love it there :).
@jumpthemoon15 oh wow!! Thats awesome! Haha...I might be coming over for a lesson next week, but my mare isn't there anymore. He had her for about three months, from the Open State show til the end of november. He worked wonders with her. We ended up getting 9th at State with her only being with him for a week (: He's an awesome trainer.
Yeah, he's great. I'm just boarding my horse, I don't have him in training, but he has helped me with him a lot. I moved him there in mid-October, so I would have been there towards the end of when your horse was there! What did you show in at State?
@jumpthemoon15 I did all the 13-17 speed events, halter and showmanship with my mare, and I rode Jean's horse Strider in the HUS. I ended up getting seventh in halter and hus and 9th in showmanship :)
Oh, ok, we weren't showing in the same classes, then. I'm in the 18 & over classes, and I don't do speed events, halter, or showmanship. My little sister was probably against you in the showmanship. I was supposed to do the HUS but ended up leaving early--I can't remember if my sister did the 17 & under HUS, but if she did, she would have been in your class! I just did the HMS, WP, and W/T...didn't have very good rides though. We won the HMS one year, I guess we couldn't do it again haha.
@jumpthemoon15 haaa cool. There was supposed to be like 30 people in the 17&under hus but there ended up being like 15 cause it was so late lol. And Don's girls all got top 5 in the 18&over horsemanship :D It was awesome.
typical 4-h show all the greenies acting like the jumps are 20ft tall! i show in 4-h sometimes and see this all the time, and i have had it happen especially on hot days when my horse and i are tired!
Just watching this makes me frustrated! If the riders would have a steady grip on the reins and a steady leg, their horses wouldn't be running out. If the horse stops or does run out, MAKE him go over it so he learns that we are going over this whether you want to or not. They are just rewarding and accepting their bad behavior by letting them run out and stopping by not doing anything about it and just fixing the problem...
Some of them didn't have bad rounds, just one blooper (which is what was shown here)...only a few of them were complete disasters. It was a 4-H show, so there were a lot of green horses and riders.
I was there! Woot! Lol, I ride gaited horses.. That big TB cross was pretty nice though.. havent even watched the video yet lol, not sure. I loved the pony on the front of the video! lol.. me and my friends love to "claim" horses in events.. the pony was mine when I saw her schooling! Found her in the barns, her name is Ellie May Clampett.. too cute!
Wow...i saw me twice on my 2 different horses!! lol. I remember that, it was a GREAT experiance and it's making me work a lot harder in training my 2 horses.
I'm glad you see it that way! My jumper--now very successful in the Hopefuls/Level 1s--started out a lot like this...couldn't get him over a fence when I first started jumping him. Now I couldn't hold him back from most. We did the jumping at the 4-H show until I aged out.
i feel so bad for the horses and the riders. that must have been embarrassing, but its good experience to go through the bad courses cuz it teaches u lots of things! were the horses afraid of the fences?
I think some of them were afraid of them--they weren't very scary fences, but a lot of these kids (and their horses) hadn't shown much before, so it was new for them. Others were either being brats or responding to a poor ride.
Yes, there were some good rides! I have a video of an adorable pinto pony and his winning equitation round, but I haven't put it up yet. I didn't get videos of the others (my memory card was full, so I was keeping the blooper clips and deleting the rest as I was watching). But there were a lot of mistakes, more so than you'd see at a typical h/j show--probably because most of these kids haven't done a lot of showing outside of 4-H (once a year).
The good thing is none of them came out of the saddle and on to the ground!! :)

people, keep in mind that some of these horses may have never been in an indoor arena before....

@Unbridled396 If they've jumped before AND qualified for State, the chances of NEVER being in an indoor are slim to nothing.

@LoveMyZora my horse has never shown in an indoor arena AND we showed at both counties and districts, so therefore it is possible.
