the "Japanese" way is faster and it is neat. The point of this video is how the USN recruits HAVE to fold their shirts in Boot Camp. Once they are out, they can use the Japanese way if they want.
When I went to boot camp we had these coffin racks that you can open up to store things in. Well when we would have inspections on our folded shirts, some of the guys would fold it, spray the shit out of it with starch, and place it in between the bed part of the rack and a locked compartment part of the rack which would press the shirts. After sleeping on the rack, the next day these guys would essentially just have a stack of bricks.
I like the US army's style of folding shirts better. Well it's more of rolling then folding but it's small takes up very little space. And it makes a great little projectile to throw at your annoying little siblings
too funny. each branch kinda has thier own ways of things, but its all similar, all HAS to be the way they show you and in whatever drawer designated lol. brings back memories!
I haven't noticed any. The key is to use your "recruit irons" and smooth everything out. I use this method for my undershirts but my tee shirts I use the Japanese shirt folding method so I can see what shirt I am grabbing
oh god, just remember the it goes from the larger shirts on the bottom to the smaller at the top..thank god I have a nice closet to put my stuff in right now instead of those horrible RTC racks.

Learned to fold T-shirts like this in 1967 and still doing it. Some things learned in boot camp stay with you forever.

This is the same way I did it when I was in Navy Boot Camp in 2001. Too bad I never made it through boot camp.

It's actually a western method.
The Japanese are usually just very neat (speaking from experience) so this way is just usually associated with them.
