  • I have a question. Which word does he use when he says "five" at 1:13. It doesn't sound like "fünf" to me.

  • @FlitkoSLO he says funf dude

  • perhaps the greatest sub scene in any movie ever made

  • 5:47 what the hell happend with that guy?

  • Dislike people 1 und 2... los!

  • I'm so glad they made a movie showing the war from the "other side". So sick of seeing "We're the best we defeated the Germans" bullshit British and American war movies. War is war, and 9/10 soldiers on both sides hated it.

  • @DeepOKAY2009

    you're absolutely right

  • Swear the subtitles are all slightly different on each version I've seen, not that it matters, so long as they get the general "idea" and thrust of the conversation across.

Better then that shitty english dub anyways.

  • What is the German word they call the Captain? Sounds like: "Herr Kerloin".

  • @DanielBrennan9 Herr Kaleun, short for Kapitän Leutnant. I don't know if the term was used for u-boat commanders irrespective of their actual servicerank. From Leutnant up to Korvetten- or Fregattenkapitän.

  • @NielsC68 Thanks. Just got the book today actually with it in.

  • @DanielBrennan9 You're quite welcome. The novel is a treat alright. :)

  • @DanielBrennan9

    Kapitän- Leutnand

  • @udkrause

It`s "Kapitänleutnant" (one word). And even it`s often written and spoken KaleuN, it`s KaLeu without an N at the end. Due to german military tradition calling an superior " Herr Dienstgrad" "(Mr. Rank)" "Herr Kapitänleutnant" would be just too long so it`s shortend to Kaleu. The same reason why all "Kapitäne (Captains[Navy])" are adressed as "Herr Kaptän"

  • Could someone please answer me this: why do they have to adjust the target inside the turrent and why must they know the angle on the bow?

  • @Juggernautakog The observations are relayed from the bridge (or it could be done through the periscope of course) to the crew operating the Vorhalterechner (Solution Calculator or TDC in English). You can look up Torpedo Data Computer on e.g. Wikipedia.

Very briefly: AOB matters because it's important if a target is five degrees to the port or starboard, and it matters if the target moves left or right.

    Cheers.

  • lol that music at 0:15 and 0:20 is strange

  • Hate this new youtube interface. it sucks

  • 6:41 So creepy.

Its scary thinking about, that this happend, for both sides of the war.

damn, i would shit my pants if i should be a marine on a uboat from ww II. Shit, Rest in Peace for all soldiers who did'nt make it.

  • The ships coming apart is spooky

Why are they so worried about noise if they have the disel engines going ?

  • They are diving, before they worry about the noise. They cannot dive with diesel engines running, they would die of gas.

  • @Proudnewfoundlander1

Submarines were not able to use combustion engines under water because they need lots of oxigen, which is not available under water. So they used big rechargable batteries --> this was very silent. Also the diesel engines would have big disadvantage under water: you could track the boat simply by looking for the exhaust bubbles.

The whole thing changed with nuclear submarienes --> they don't need oxygen, so they don't need to surface every few hours to recharge.

  • He says: "Anlauf beginnt."

  • Is he saying

    Anlauf beginnt

    or

    Angriff beginnt

    ?

  • Anlauf beginnt!, which pretty much translates to "starting approach!"

  • Its so sad to hear the sailors begging the U Boat men to save them as they burned alive and drowned...even one of the bridge crew can be heard crying if you listen...this shows you how terrible it was in real life

  • He shouldve known better than to assume there was no escort just because ther werent visible

  • Yeah, one of the crew remarked "the crazy bastard just runs in like that"

  • in the book they got depthcharged

  • Hearing the ships sink is QUITE erry though.....

  • yeah, very vivid part of the movie

  • I think there is a mistake in the movie: from the bridge it appears they fired the 4th. torpedo. Once underwater they only listen for 3 hits....anyone else notice that?

  • "Time's up for the third torpedo..."

    (Explosion)

    "Number three."

    (Ships sinking)

    "Two going down."

One of the torpedoes missed. Number 4 wasn't far behind 3, so when the navigator tells you time is up on 3, it's running a little slow or the estimated range was a bit off, but four has missed it's target entirely.

  • Apparently, but you'd think they'd comment on #4 if they commented on #3....

  • Too busy celebrating getting some hits.

  • @PotatoGunsRule

Howdy, the point is when he said "Torpedo 3, Los" hte one in the sub replied "Rohr 3 ist ausgefallen", which wasn´t translated with the subtitles. That means in english " Tube three is out of order" ;)

  • OK....but torpedo #3 hit....so was it torpedo tube #4 that was out of order? (Thanks for the translation, German is such a cool-sounding language!)

  • Hi

yeah it was torpedo number three, because there were just three fired. So actually torpedo tube no. four fired the torpedo with the number three ;)

I never thought that someone from outside like the german language, because it sounds so hard in contrast to french or italian, but thank you for this! =))

  • No, he said " Schuss aus Rohr 3 ist gefallen" that means "the shot was done"

  • Wrong, he said Schuss aus Rohr 3 ist gefallen.

and this means, the shot was done.

Why one Torpedo doesn't hit ist more a torpedo dump I think. Maybe because of this Speedboat attack, a crewman later said.

Original said: Die schwimmen Falsch, war ja auch ein Schnellbootangriff. Drauf und dran."

  • i can feel what it must have been like in WWII. Although the films are still lacking the reality.

Das Boot did really well as a film.

  • simply amazingly done for a film!

  • think of how many weeks they were out on patrol, and it all comes down to these eight minutes.

  • Comment removed

  • Before the building of SOSUS fixed-acoustic detection system , It was practically impossible to detect a submerged submarine

  • Its spooky hearing the ships break up

  • The ships coming apart, the sound they make is spooky...

  • great ending, just one of thousands of war efforts that turned out to be pointless for the men who accomplished them, war is ironic in a weird way

  • what was sad was the end of the movie, the crew went home after all that abuse to only get killed.

  • We only saw four get killed. Still it was the only way the film could end, making it even more sad.

  • The entire WAR is the sad thing !

  • The sad thing is the boat the sunk most probably has children in it the destroyer was there escort

  • Wrong. There were no kids on those ships.

  • Why would cargo ships be transporting children?

  • Most of the soldiers fighting in those days are to be called children!

  • At one point in WWII, the British thought it would be a great idea to evacuate children to Canada through a war zone in the Atlantic as part of the Children's Overseas Reception Board. The SS City of Benares was sunk with a high loss of life, including children in Sept., 1940.

Those children who WERE evacuated to Canada spent the next five years completely seperated from their families.

    Who thinks these things up?

  • I suppose having their towns and cities razed to the ground by the Luftwaffe (not to mention the looming threat of an amphibious invasion) drove them to a certain degree of desperation.

  • I'd have sent my kids to Wales. That would be an act of desperation. Sending them through a war zone is an act of insanity.

  • government bureaucrats with no sense of real life nor reality

  • can someone please tell me the song in this! i cant find it anywhere!

please! i saw the extended movie yesterday and it was awesome!

  • The song is called simply "Convoy" and is on the soundtrack as composed by Klaus Doldinger. Look for it on Amazon.

  • @MindBullets2142 nope its not "convoy" it is "u96" also on the original soundtrack

  • @MindBullets2142

there are two soundtracks in here convoi, and angriff, you can download them free on mp3lemon just search there Das boot, whole album there for free

  • that was because sonar, and the allied escort ships had more firepower and better technologies at the end of 1941. wich lead to the heavy losses on the german side. but do not forget that a lot of warships were sunk by the germans.

  • Actually they held their own against escorted convoys until the Allies created new technology. It would see-saw back and forth for 3 years before the Allies secured a technological and numerical advantage. Stuff like escorts carriers, Hedgehogs, and Magnetic Anomaly detectors sealed the fate of the U-boat crews.

  • @SpenzOT You Talk Utter Shite, the battle of the Atlantic was over by Feb 1942, with the RN having sunk 75%

    of all Kriegsmarine.

No new technology,, Other than Ultra ! aka Station X Now Jog on Wanker

  • They didn't lose like puppies. Until centimetric wave radar, U-boat night surface attacks were immensely effective. And why would they want to be good at killing ships that can fire back? Submarines have no armor and depend on surprise for attack.

  • Their purpose was not to attack war ships but merchants. With somenthing about 100.000 BRT sunk to average per boat they were very succesfull at that. Later in the war the Allies developed outstanding countermeasures. That and the unwillingness of the german high command to adopt the type XXI earlier or to notice that "enigma" has been decoded made the german sailors cannon fodder in the end.

  • The U-boats sank their fair share of Allied destroyers. Ever heard of U-47 penetrating Scapa Flow?

  • Gunther Prien ? Royal Oak?

  • Ayup.

  • @g3st470 Yeah I was visiting Orkney Islands, Scapa Flow and read about the Royal Oak in the Library in Kirkwall. Went to pay my respects at the Church there too. There's a huge brass bell taken from the Oak placed as a token of respect for the loss of so many lives. 833 to be precise.RIP!

  • that was intinse

  • Outstanding action sequence. Thanks for the sub-titles. Very authentic to hear it in German.

Unlike some cornball movies, this one shows the professionalism of the men of war in combat.
