......so I decided to work on my diaphragm and the next time we performed in March, I was able go the allotted time without sneaking in a breath or stagger breathing, and I didn't get nearly as exhausted. I sing first soprano so I use a lot of air when I sing, oh and I have asthma, but the song was like running a marathon for everyone. Choir is why I temporarily dropped clarinet, Orchestra practice was right after choir practice, and it was all before school even started. Too exhausting!
I played clarinet 5th-8th grade and did choir throughout grade school and HS. Isn't it easier to just strengthen and train your diaphragm to take deep enough breaths and to use the air properly to sustain the sound? I mean, I remember this one song we sang in HS that was like running a marathon. We performed it once in Dec and on the long notes I was doing a lot of stagger breathing, and between the constant short hard breaths in and the heat from stage I felt like I was going to pass out.....
@crazycellist973 It will get better the more you do it, but I still only use it as a supplement to real full breaths. The full breaths also allow you to get your chops off the reed for a second which really helps with endurance.
I can do all the steps in circular breathing except getting the air into my cheeks. I can blow air out of my mouth with my cheeks while breathing in, and while doing all this, I can even get it out of my lungs. The problem is, when it gets out of lungs, I can't get it into my mouth, because it always goes out of my nose. Any suggestions or tips to fix this problem?
@Starbirdy9999 From your description, it seems that you're missing one step. When you are pushing the air out of your cheeks, the lungs should be pulling air IN through the nose. Try puffing out your cheeks and breathing in and out your nose just to get the feel for it. Then work to breath in through the nose while expelling air from the cheeks. It takes a little time to get the feel for this coordination. it's not a normal way to breath, but it's a great tool.
@Starbirdy9999 BTW- If I'm not quite reading your description right, send me a video to show me what you mean ad I'll see if I can offer any better suggestions. Thanks!
@klbtree Srry but my description was a little vague...I meant that when I was blowing air out of my mouth with my cheeks, I couldn't get any more air into my cheeks afterwards, but that problem is solved, and now I can circular breathe (of course I still need practice). Thanks for ur help!
My friends are amazed at my ability to circular breathe on my oboe. No one ever taught me how, i taught myself in 7th grade when i had to hold out the same note for 37 measures and i didn't want to stop lol.
The best thing you can do is find a professional oboist in your area to help you get started. Even if you can't take lessons full time, a little help as your getting started will go a long way. In the meantime, try some of the exercises in my reed games video. They should help a bit.
1. Absolutely, you have to find the balance in the embouchure to make it work. Try dropping the jaw about a mm if it's going sharp on you.
2. I'm not intentionally puffing my cheeks, that's just where the air seems to end up. So if you can do it without- cool. Though I think pocketing the air in the cheeks does help me keep it away from the embouchure a bit and prevents that "sharp" issue.
3. It's possible to tongue, it just depends on the passage.
alright thanks a lot, a few other irrelevant questions though, since u seem to be very knowledgeable about the oboe
what is the proper tongue position for double tonguing?
and i have this reed that is really irritating, it is super flat so when i squeeze to play a mid/lower note like an Ab, it jumps up an octave. what should i do with this reed?
and one more thing is when im doing my cyclic breathing, i usually go really loud as in pushing air out of my mouth, and if i try to push more soflty i cant get a good sound, any ideas?
Keep working with it and make sure your air stream is very steady throughout. Think of the air and the embouchure as separate components. My "reed games" video has some good exercises to help isolate and achieve a lot of control in this regard.
Double tonguing uses the regular "tip of the tongue to the tip of the reed" in front and a ka or ga on the rebound. I'll try to do a video about it at some point. A good way to practice is to do scales all on ka.
do u know jennette ingle?! i am taking lessons with her at Vaplaraiso University... please tell me if you know her... shes 7th ranked oboist in the world!
I've met her on several occasions, but haven't had a chance to play with her yet. How long have you studied with her? Having a great teacher is the best thing you can do to improve your playing.
I've been thinking about doing something along those lines., it'll take me a little time to put my thoughts together...so stay tuned. I will talk about it eventually. What are you playing on now?
uh! im soooo bored with my selmer...... I'm in 8th grade, and play at a sophmore in high school level D: My brother is in Junior year, and is amazing, but takes all the instrumnt possiblities, with his wats, and thinks he needs a new instument every few months!
I play clarinet and im trying to learn oboe but these low and high notes are annoying can u do a video to help ?!

My air is still getting stale if I do it for more than three breaths - is there any easy solution to this?

@Starbirdy9999 No worries, now I know what you mean and that does take a little patience to figure out. Sounds like you're on the right track!

@Xternium There's nothing like a complete lack of rests to motivate you to learn the technique! Who writes 37 bars of the same note? Eek! ; )

I play the baritone horn and this helped me to play an uber long note in my band song with taking a break

i have several questions
1. is it possible to use cyclic breathing without going sharp?
2. i can do it without puffing my cheeks out, is either way better?
3. is it possible to tongue while doing this?
