I just saw one yesterday (11/21/2010) at the Bay. It was outside of the white buoys (the two marking the rightmost channel when looking at the ocean from the beach), probably 20 yards outside of the buoys, right above the cable pipes on the bottom of the sea floor. It was feeding off the spawning of black triggerfish. I had never seen one at the bay. It was quite mellow and let me snap dozens of pictures. Right before, indeed, I had seen spotted eagle rays toward witches brew.
I have been to Hanauma many times and never had the opportunity you had to see a manta ray, please let us locals know of the area you were at to see such a beautiful creature, were you off the left or right side facing the open ocean from the beach? Obviously beyond the reef but how far and what month, thanks for sharing.
I don't remember what month it was. It was just outside the reef behind sandman's patch. If you out the channel in the middle and to the right. It was when there was a full moon. I have only seen manats a few times. I have seen spotted eagle rays more often near Witches Brew.
Thank you that was very helpful as I had imagined that they are more open water and do not follow the shelf leading into the bay along the clifts at the mouth on both sides. They said a couple of Hump back Whales were spotted inside the bay probably more to the center last month [February] . Keep filming so we can continue to be inspired by your ability to spot a rare sight. Mahalo

Nice find! Closest thing I've seen there is a spotted eagle ray. I saw a nice school of about 60 jacks there too.

MetalAddicted666 2 years ago 2
that's the exact same way I am! But I'm gonna do it anyway, a little pain is a small price to pay for the beauty of the ocean =]
AND, you can always wear a wet suit I hear you can't feel jellyfish through that

Are you sure this is Hanauma? Looks a bit deep, but you could've been pretty far out.
Gorgeous footage! It's videos like this that showcase the beauty of our oceans =}

Wow! I've seen/heard of turtles, eels, octopus, and cuttlefish, but never a manta ray in Hanauma Bay. Pretty cool.
