I've seen Conrad pick up dudes straight up and out of convertibles, lift and throw 250 pound guys around like nothing, and the dude was pretty impressive in the physical sense. Just started watching Cannon, the show is outstanding! Also note that during WW2, Bill Conrad was a fighter pilot. This guy was no pussy.
Fortunatley I dont htink its our hero taking the fall, see how his gut becomes far more satisfyingly Frank-like when you get the close up, TWICE as big as the falling guys.
I liked it when he threw the odd punch at a villain and knocked him out! Notice he cant lean into the punch in case he fell over on his face! (Thats why fat people like to wrestle and not punch, although the UFC's David 'Tank' Abbott is an exception he still has to lean back to throw and his reach is only 18 inches passed his stomach...
Frank Cannon's fall was a 9.0 on the Richter scale measured at the Caltech Seismological Laboratory. rf-great to hear stories from people who have met stars like William Conrad in person. He was a radio star on Gunsmoke, played tough guys in a number of movies including The Killers and after Cannon did quite a bit of great narration work. He was a fine talent and apparently also a good person.
I'm too young so I really don't know him but my dad talks about him all the time. When I first saw this I was laughing so hard! Especially when he's sliding down the stairs on his back while his legs are on the rail!
1983 I flew to CA to meet this man! Caught him at home in Sherman Oaks, gave me 15 minutes of his time and was VERY friendly. THE HIGHLIGHT of MY LIFE. R.I.P Bill, you were AWESOME!
rf396,Man,really you got to meet him? Did he offer you some food or a drink? Did he have a large kitchen and book collection? He looks like he is as nice in person, as he was on the small screen..I miss him too..
It would be great to have 'Cannon' re-made into a movie..They re-made a lot of other 70's shows..Why not his??
He was really gracious. He had a vanity plate on his Mercedes that read Darnoc/ Conrad spelled backwards. I met him as he came home so we spoke in his front yard for about 15 min. I took some picks, then wished him well and left. A VERY VERY NICE GUY
@rf396 Now that is pretty cool. I remember watching Cannon, as a young kid in the 70's. Loved the show, and am now after all these years, watching reruns on retro tv. Think I may have to buy the DVD's of the series, as I don't remember them all, these days. Other shows from the 70's, I've seen many times. Till now, this one I don't recall ever seeing since the original air dates. Fantastic show. His character is great. Some great scenary in the episodes as well. Wish I could have met the man. A+
@SixSpeedSS My only regret in meeting him was NOT knowing just how accomplished he was. At the time I was a huge fan of his from Cannon but didnt know that he was the ORIGINAL Matt Dillon when Gunsmoke was on the radio for 9 yrs before it moved to TV, or that He'd been in some 7000 radio shows in his career, or that he'd been a WWII fighter pilot as well as a director and producer. He was the narrator of many 60's shows including Rocky and Bullwinkle. an amazing guy to say the least.
@rf396 That is a very impressive career. I'd looked into him a bit, but didn't realize he was that accomplished. I sure wish I would have been this interested in his work, years ago. Really a shame to have so many of the greats, no longer with us anymore. Or being so near the end of their time on this earth.
Thanks for the details on his prior work, I appreciate that. Very amazing guy!
@SixSpeedSS Oh my pleasure. you may find this of interest as well he was friendly with Jack Webb of "Dragnet" fame and appeared on radio with Webb in a number of shows as well as a great movie called "30". Its about one night at a big City Newspaper. Great stuff. You can find ALOT of old radio shows online and I reccomend them as an alternative to the garbage passing for TV these days. real actors, real writers, real entertainment, and Conrad and Webb were two of the best.
@rf396 Very interesting. I've watched a few different shows from back in the day, which had Webb's touch. Adam-12 used to be one I was hooked on, as a youngster. The radio shows were a touch before my time, but I certainly know what you mean about the quality of all those involved, and the end product being far superior to what is on tv these days. I've started watching my favorite tv series shows online, when nothing is on cable. Which is often.
It's true, a recurring theme in the show was Frank Cannon's large size and love of fine food and drink, which both he and others would poke fun at. Be that as it is, Cannon can still run faster and fight better than even his slimmest of opponents!
nah, not at all. You should have heard my 3 friends the first night we saw this..holy smokes! Actually I think the producers who staged this fall were trying to achieve that affect anyway.
I think jon cyhper was in this episode
