i saw this man at this ice cream shop in glenview tonight performing with a kid. they did a fantastic job. i took his card and tipped him well. love this music!
At one minute and half it was exactly like roland dyens and to tell u the truth i rly didnt like it because it was exactly the same(k r.d ofc better)but anyway almost, then u used ur own ways of playing and i liked more...(just my opinion...)
I am attending a competition next month, and one of the pieces in my programme is Tango En Skai. I would be very greatful if you could give me some advice about this piece. Anything. Thanks in advance.
Practice at slow speeds to attain consistant pulse and accuracy. Execute every detail of the score. The three against two rhythms can be tricky. Count them carefully and practice with a metronome. There are many sudden changes in dynamics and many accents to obseve. Don't fight the piece, play within yourself. Breath deeply, keep your posture erect and you will stay more relaxed. Above all, never forget that it is the composer, not the performer, who should impress the listener.
Thank you for your help Chris. I would like to inform you that I received a medal at the competition. I played Tango en Skai, Fuoco, Bach's 2nd Lute Suite's Gigue and Allemande.
Chris sorry to bug you but I got another question. On that first big scale from 00:19 to 00:21, are you alternate-picking or are you plucking with a bunch of hammer-ons? what fingers do you use? i can't seem to get that scale right. BTW thanks so much for that other piece of advice, I've been practicing it and i'm getting better at it.
It's a little hard to explain, but basically, if consecutive notes are on the same string, I use hammmer-ons, if they cross strings, I group the notes across three consecutive strings and use a p-i-m arpeggio pattern. I changed the fingering a little from what Dyens noted in his score, but his fingering would work as well. The music is published - I recommend that you purchase the score.
Well played....Chris I had a question if you could answer it, that would be great....from 00:24 to 00:26 when you do that chord and slide it up the neck of the guitar....does your left hand just strum down or is there something else to it?
Before strumming each chord I pluck the first string three times in quick succession using the ring, middle, and index fingers of the right hand. Using the symbols a (anular) for the ring finger, m for middle, i for index, and p↑ for down stroke with thumb, the pattern would read:
Very Well! Congratulations Mr Laughlin! Your performance is the best (after R.Dyens' of course). Being a proper student of this piece myself, I understand it's high difficulties and admire you. One day, maybe, I shall post my own performance,as a response to yours. You have taught me many things about this piece. Once again, I salute you.

I don't like his tempo/rubato. Roland's is the best by far.

I had to follow this guy in a master class back in 1990. He played this piece. I remember thinking, "God, you can just kill me now. Ok? Thanks."

Sorry about that. Looks can be deceiving. Some players hunch over their guitar and look smaller than you, I guess.
