  • I'm going to college right now and working part time as a dental assistant. Does anyone know if when I'm applying for med school It's good to put working as a dental assistant good for the admissions?

  • That and research, GPA, and MCATs are met as well.

  • I like your voice.....sounds like your nice...and I think you are nice! And nice advice!

  • I'm currenty a student in the UC system. I don't know how things work at other universities, but my school doesn't offer a pre med major. You can major in anything, even Dance, and apply to medical school. The pre med requirements are known as the Core Life Sciences which consist of one year of: Bio, Gen. Chem., O. Chem., Physics, and often Calculus. I'm an anthropology major and am taking these classes as well.

  • Yay! Same here! I am Biological Anthropology and Neurobiology/Physiology.

  • @MGKYA A pre med major does not exist. There are merely pre-med students who take required classes.

  • @batmanpronz well i think they actually do exist at some schools...just not most schools. It might not really be a major but you declare yourself premed and you dont declare a major

  • @batmanpronz Yes, I'm aware of that. That was my point. However, some schools (such as mine) offer majors such as Biomedical Sciences which are the closest thing to a pre-med major. My point was that any major will do as long as the required courses are met.

  • @MGKYA my apologies. I meant to respond to another comment.

  • I applied today as a patient transporter. I hope they hire me because I really want to get some experience before I apply.

  • how about military volunteer? cause I am in army rotc and doing pre med?

  • i forgot to mention that im took and taking a lot of science classes..freshmen year i took bio..sophomore year i took physical science and chemistry..junior year im takin ap chemistry and anatomy..senior year im going to take ap bio advanced anatomy and medical assisting...is that stuff all gonna matter when i apply to premed or do i have to cut down a little bit on the sciences and go for more electives?

  • you don't have to apply to pre-med, just apply to the college that offers it. most colleges don't even have pre-med majors(I don't know of a single one that offers a pre-med major). all pre-med means is you are taking the prerequisites for med school. major in whatever you want, whether its biology, economics, history, or anything else. get good grades and have good "quality" experinces (volunteer etc) you should get into med school

  • Can someone help me like how i can get into premed...im volunteering at a hospital right now and im 16..but i don't understand how premed works...does every college have premed or...????

  • not every college. pre med is just a major you get in college. you get a pre med advisor, and they put you in certain classes that make up the pre med program. after 4 years you major in pre med. im 16 to btw, and i got lucky enough to get alllot of answers. so just ask if you have more.

  • fo'sho...is pre-med broken down into like bio, chem and what not..or like what??...and what if u go to a college that doesn't have pre-med...cuz there's barely any colleges that do...

  • yea they give you certain sciences and math to take. i got lucky and i live in seattle, WA and the university of washington has a pre med program, and is the no.6 med school in the nation. lol but yea, you do need to take a pre med program. im sure you'll find a school that offers pre med.

  • Just to clear up some misconceptions:

    1. there is no such major as "pre-med". I'm a neuroscience major who is "in" pre-med. I have a friend who is a bio major and she is also in pre-med. Another friend is an engineering major and he is also in pre-med

    2. The pre-med track is gen bio, gen chem, gen physics, and orgo. Many med schools also require english and calculus. Some require statistics.

  • which ones only acquire stats? I am a bio major and I have to take calculis which I am not happy about but I have already taken stats. Throw me a bone here.

  • Ahh...spell "calculus" correctly! Those little mistakes you make now look really bad.

  • That was a mistake by me typing to fast and not rechecking my spelling. If you'll observer, the the U is right beside the I. Again, Im sorry for this.

  • Could some one help me? I am planning on attending to medical school. I am currently a senior in high school. I was wondering: If I go to a Community College for two years, will this hurt my chances of getting admitted into medical school? will it look bad on my resume?

  • if you get very good grades in community college and volunteer at a local hospital, that will look really good on your resume. remember there are a few people in med school that are over 40 yrs old and they have worked for 20 yrs, so that might be a bad thing too. if your young, go for it.

  • im planning on doing the same thing..;)..but word is a its a little harder to get into med school from community college but its not impossible

  • Yeah.. all we can do is try our best. God knows best and inshallah we will be successful.

  • Inshallah inshallah inshallah ya rab :)

  • ameeen = )

  • Thank you for sharing. I'am currently thinking of having a part-time job or volunteering in hospitals.

  • oh and im 17, if someone can reply back with the school requirements for pre med school and stuff like that, i really want to be a doctor, if someone could reply with requirements.. that would be super cool

  • eek, this is one month late, but...to answer your question, if you havnt had it done so already...To volunteer at a hospital you still need to fill out an application, give references, and be interviewed like a real job. The hospitals have a either a separate office exclusivily for volunteers or its in conjunction with their HR department. Websites for the hospitals usually have a "volunteer" or "work with us" link.

  • Im 17 and volunteer at 2 hospital. just head on in and ask about opportunities.I work in a pathology lab and my tasks are usually small but make life easier for the doctors. also, i spend most of my time observing them and getting a hands on experience in the grossing room and morgue.

  • how do you volenteer? do you just walk in and ask if you can or what ?

  • thankyou!

  • Thank you! This rocked. I work at an ER and doing my undergrad at the moment. Volunteer work has been emphasized to me ever since Freshmen year of college.

  • I agree! Volunteer work has been emphasized to me as well throughout my undergrad career. The problem is that the quality of the volunteer programs in my area aren't up to par. I'd like to job shadow a physician if I could, but they're all so busy. Good luck with you're undergrad work. How long do you have to go?

  • I have one more semester, but I got to volunteer abroad to Japan and Romania, and it really has showed me that I don't want to be a doctor yet. I wanna do more international work than anything else!

  • How cool! What a great opportunity. Well, good luck with whatever you decide to do. Cheers :)
