IC...so red squirrels are evil then, 'cause they eat baby birds? Maybe you oughta fry your cat too. Don't get out your hippie gun there Clem...I just think it's stupid. Did u know that animals eat other animals? If u intend to put an end to this disgusting practice you've got your work cut out for you. (also scientists have determined that baby birds rarely frequent bird feeders)
@mastahchin "That's like saying I should kill my dog for killing mosquitoes".
No dude...that would be weird....but you can electrocute your dog if you want...there are many products on the market for that. What I'm talking about is luring random creatures with bait (so we can observe nature without actually going anywhere) and shocking the ones we don't care for because they behave in a manner that doesn't sit well with our sensitivities. All I said is it's stupid and I'll stand behind that.
@Edwinward Relax, man. I'm all for the circle of life and that crap. But I buy sunflower seed for the birdies, not the squirrels. The birds are what I want more of in my yard, so I get to make the call on who get to eat and who gets zapped. You can start the red squirrel welfare program if you want to attract that kind of vermin to your neighborhood.
@wailbn Yeah I kinda popped off, but thank you for abandoning the 'defender of the weak' argument. I feed birds too and I'm sure if I was up to my ass in squirrels I'd feel differently about running them off, but I don't know how much that thing hurts and I'd go another route. There are some bad people doing very bad things to animals. I reserve anything approaching actual outrage for those guys. The squirrel outreach program will launch in the fall of 2012. peace
Not likely, a bird would land on the metal perch itself, and since it would not be also touching a "ground" it would not have a current flow through its body, like when a bird sits on a high voltage power line. The squirrel on the other hand, made metal to "ground" metal contact, thus getting shocked. Weather the metal dish or the metal perch is the material with current, I don't know. 8^)
@designthewerks Actually, normally the voltage between the perch and the dish is only 9 volts, but when the circuit senses low resistance, like a squirrel or a human, it kicks up to about 250 V, 500 Hz. But birds are really high resistance (I measured a pet parrot with an ohmmeter once; guess it's those odd scaly dino feet!) from beak to feet, and they won't set it off.
@2degucitas See my reply to designthewerks. Big birds like blue jays and woodpeckers routinely stand on the dish and eat from the ports without ever setting off the circuit; it only gets the squirrels. Perfect!
If you want to stop them from eating your bird food, then put chilli powder on the seed, the squirrel's hate the chilli and the birds can't taste it. Failing that ........SHOOT the fuckers!!!!!
@takadi I believe you might be thinking of Britain. Their red squirrels are endangered (and they are a different genus & species) because the American Gray squirrel is displacing them. The type of red squirrel in the video is very common and actually endangers songbirds in suburban settings. Also, the shock doesn't harm them; they just don't want another one!
Yes we're trying, by keeping defenseless baby birds from being eaten by the occupying red squirrels. We tried feeding the squirrels tofurkey, but that ended up attracting a bunch of hippies to the back yard.
Fun fun fun

@Edwinward wtf does frying his cat have to do with deterring pests? That's like saying I should kill my dog for killing mosquitoes.

So, just curious, can a bird shock itself the same way???

@carlsberg1964 This person is correct. Birds are incapable of tasting capsaicin, the chemical that makes up the key ingredient of pepper spray.
