I'm visiting India for the very first time in about 3 weeks; I'm so excited! I don't know what to expect though. Does anyone have a advice to give before I go? Thanks
take some witch hazel or acquim (i think thats how its spelt) hand sanitiser because washing your hands under the sink is still really dirty. dont drink tap water, even in the shower. brush your teeth with bottled water and only drink the same, make sure the lid is sealed before you drink because sometimes it can jsut be tap water.
if you give money or food to one beggar, be sure that 10 more will follow once they see you do that. you will get stared at in india and it can be pretty unnerving but they are just curious in you and nothing bad will come of it.
if you want to give to beggars, try buy them food as opposed to giving money, and if you want to give alot, give it to a beggar who isnt begging as such (some jsut do it for sport like kids on their way home from school) give it to the families under a 1m x 1m tarpaulin who have 5 people sleeping there, they need all the help they can get
Thanks a lot. I believe that I am staying at a friend's house who is a doctor. Do the same rules apply at a doctor's home and the water? Are table manners any different there compared to the west?
umm to be safe, yes, the tap water is drinkable after you have lived there for awhile because you get immune to the bugs, same with the food on the street, dont have it early on in your trip, wait a few weeks. and yes table manners, right hand is for eating and left hand is wiping your bottom when you go to the toilet, so DO NOT i repeat DO NOT use your left hand to eat unless they are in which case they probably are not using their left hand for the toilet so its ok
I hope that you don't feel as though I am bombarding you with all of these questions. It's just that I'm departing very soon and I want to leave a good impression with this family. What is the average temperature in Feb. in northern India? I'm having a hard time packing because I don't know wether to pack cloths for winter, summer...
hi nah it's fine, you need to be prepared as possible for india, it's rather hectic! umm i was there in december and it was hot, so feb i think it will still be hot-ish or warm, so short sleeved things, but DEFINATLEY take long sleeved things to protect from the mosquitos, and take aerogard tropical strength and malaria tablets. where in northern india are you going? what cities/towns?
Enlighten me, please. How much preparation do I need for a week's stay? What do you mean by hectic? I'm from the South Bronx and I've been to Mexico a bunch of times; do any of these places compare? I know that I'm going somewhere between Dehli and Dehradun; I'll probably wind up staying in Dehradun, but I'm not too sure. I really appreciate your help.
oh well just preparation i mean, your going to see deformity of beggars and povery everywhere and the smell is horrible and people are dirty and just its very different to everywhere, but people are nice and when you get there, you can't fix everything that you see, eg you cant feed every single beggar or give everyone money, so find some people who you think deserve your help most.
and hectic as in traffic does not stop for you, taxis are extremely fun and yeah, if your walking round stay on the footpath if you could call it that
that part with the gaylord icecream stand at 4:36 was hillarious!LOL
