Government officials, because of terms, don't actually have to answer to the people and rarely fulfill their promises. But since the end of the cold war liberals have reverted to type - check out William Gladstone on Wikipedia and compare what he says with modern libertarians like Ron Paul. Remember throughout the 19th Century Liberals were in control and look at the terrible conditions in Victorian England.

@darknight651 None of them - they're all the same - but perhaps the remnants of social democracy might remain longer with liberals in charge - only because they don't want to appear uncaring to their hand wringing supporters. So in that sense you'd have to plump for the democrats or labour. But in the final analysis they also roll back the welfare state but more subtly than the republicans and Tories. Ideally we should vote for socialists or social democrats.
