What the hell is that, what a puss ass jump too. Please God don't let these people ruin the sport of motocross. I rather have a Barbie Jeep, why didn't they test it off a 180 ft. double, lets see how it does on a 10 ft. face
Petro still kicks butt in energy to weight ratios over batteries. But my hat is off to the people who are laying the ground work for what is our inevitable future. As for this comparison, at 125 lbs. Shouldn't they be comparing it to a smaller MX bike?
uh i ride a yz450f and unless this zero bike pulls wheelies at 65mph i dont want it. 36' jump my little sister jumps that far on her crf100 hahahahahahahahah. pretty cool though. i just wouldnt buy one
i'm from holland, and i just read in the newspaper that some cities buy electric off road bikes to take down the illigal motocross in quiet areas, they hardly make sound, and no toxic fumes either. so i think it's a pretty good solution, also for the dirtbikers. in my country for instance, many motocrosscircuits are closed just because they wanna built a couple of houses near by, if everybody has a dirtbike that's electric, it wouldn't matter anymore because there almost no sound!
All the nay sayers should keep quiet for a second and think. You should be supporting an american company and an emerging tech that hasn't had the years of development time and multi billion dollar companies supporting it. Besides its cheap to run, little maintenance, light weight. As soon as the battery develops over the next 5-10 years charge times will be nearer half an hour and ranges over a hundred miles per charge, with speeds surely to increase over 100mph, then zero bikes will laugh
I understand where you all are coming from but keep in mind that this was just the prototype. Give it time and if it makes it long enough then you may just get that perfect electric dirt bike. If you look at the 09 model year you can already see improvements. I just hope the company can survive long enough to a real solid dirt bike.
That 10 foot difference is gonna make a difference if you wanna race that thing. If you go off a double a little too slow on that electric thing, you're gonna case it.
you can hear the whole thing rattling around like its gonna break. it has no weight so there will be no usable flex in the frame. real MX bikes are solid and flexible in specil ways. IF IT CAN SURVIVE THE DESERT 1000 WITH NO PROBLEMS, SUCH AS FRAME CRAKING, MAYBE JUST MAYBE IT WILL HAVE A CHANCE AGAINST RIDER ABUSE....also it looks hideous.
In the powersports market, I personally that the combustion engine will be around a lot longer than what you think. KTM has made a full size mx bike powered by electric, but so far the protype response by the market hasn't been a very good one.
first bike with a single rear shock? Please! That's a yzf, not a yz. hmm since when did yzf's have left sided kickstarts and brake pedal. Something smells fishy. The jump contest was a joke. If you got any higher than 2 feet on that thing you'd bottom it out. It's like an oversized mountain bike.
I bet if keith jumped on the yzf he would be able to out jump the electric no problem, you cant compare 2 riders that are in a different class and justify the results!
This is awesome! This will change everything in our sport. We will be able to MX parks in the city and not have to worry about noise. This is huge in Europe and will be very popular here soon. This is very good news. I live in the city and will be buying one for sure!
the idea of an electric bike is interesting but why do they have to lable everything "green". I dont really care about green becasue it is just a bunch of environmentalist advertising hype.
Just think of it as zero maintenance, with a removable power source that any one can do not just mechanics, and cheap as chips to run...30 dollars from newyork to L.A
damn i hope im not riding when the electric bikes take over. they are so gay.the only reason that yz didn't go bigger off the jump was because it was a older guy on it and probably has a family so he can't get hurt or he wont be able to work
that thing is sooo sick!!! i want one lol.....PS the beach they were at during one point sure looked like santa cruz and i live right up the street from there if that near twin lakes (-;
The lack of engine noise and exhaust smell might be an issue if there are nearby residents, but in an SVRA off-road park, ordinary bike noise and smell shouldn't be a problem. I like the ring-a-ding my 2-stroke makes and enjoy the sweet smell of burned 2-stroke oil mixed with racing gas. Environmentalists typically do not apprecialte off-road sports in general, so the "green" factor may be a non-issue IMO.I still think this is an amazing machine and admire the technology. What spark arrestor?
Considering the standard dirty makes a shit load of noise and everyone complains, and these things are silent which opens up a whole new riding paradigm, and yet have the power and top it off no emissions, then my only comment is, buy stocks in Zero Motorcycles, these things will be improved on and tricked out to no end in the future, awesome work.
still doesn't change the fact that it's an oversized electric mountain bike. By no way or standard will the zero bike every compete with modern mxer's. I could possibly see the new ktm having something as far as competition. As far as noise, ride on closed course tracks. That's what dirt bikes are made for. As long as you're within zoning ordinances you're legally fine.
The exhaust note of the Zero bike just sends chills up my spine.

completly silent
FULLY automatic no clutch no gearbox
it feels more like a powerwheel then a motorcycle
dont WASTE your money the battery will die after few years making the bike worthless

He could of based it on a Vespa and proven a point.
Ck out elec drag bike, S10, Elec RC heli's, etc.
10 years ago they were just ideas.
Battery, and motors have advanced 10 fold since.
To discredit any step taken to advance an idea doesn't make sense.
Everyone just witnessed one of the steps.
No one is going out to their garage and pulling this off over night.
Everyone should be cheering him on, for actually getting this far.
That's Huge dedication and funds.
Let alone the fun factor.
