I really love martial arts and can’t believe that “Films of Fury” finally came out on demand! It has such great fight scenes and some really cool clips from some of the best martial arts movies ever! bitly .com/uBGPir
I wish ppl would stop playing the race card with this series. Would Bruce Lee have done a better job portraying the lead character? We will never know but David Carradine did the role justice
get fucked u fucking noob. carradine was shit, he can't even do matrial arts, a ten year old monk would drop the fat kunt. as for u ur a dead shit, there is no comparison between bruce lee and carradine LOL to u faggot kunt
Most people don't know the truth when it comes to how Carradine got the lead. Many mistakenly believe that Bruce Lee was passed over because the producers didn't think an asian lead could carry a show by himself. Wrong..it was someone in Bruce Lee's entourage that convinced him not to take the part because they thought it would pigeon hole his career and he wouldn't get good films later. Carradine also had a more established career at this point as well.
I'm not one to lower myself into a racist verbal mud slinging match as people are people to me. I do not see color, only the person before me. If there are those who wish to bring race into the topic of who was best for this or that part on a particular tv show or movie all I can say is life is short ... Get over it. Both Bruce Lee & David Carradine were outstanding in what they did ... Enough said.
My favorite show of the early seventies. It was not only dramatic, but thoughtful as well. Caine only used his martial arts to protect himself or others, he was never the aggressor. Phillip Ahn, Keye Luke, and Radames Pera provided solid supporting roles. I have the entire series on DVD. My favorites: Blood Brother, Superstition, The Ancient Warrior, Empty Pages of A Dead Book, and The Spirit Helper.
All in all Kung Fu was a great series. It really doesn't matter who played what part or who should have played what part as the show had a special magic to it. At least to me. Buddhist & Taoist teachings are what drew me in more than anything each week.
Though the issue of race rears it's ugly head here regarding this topic. we should give the show credit where it's due. Kung Fu more than anything was a show about life & how true love between people has no color.
I dont know why all you guys are compaering bruce lee and david carradine.it is not relevent here. why cant you talk about this great great epic tv serious.
of course if you are not Buddhist you may not be able to understand the real essense of this show. been a buddhist i can say i am amazed how david carradine interpret some highly idealistic buddhist philosophies very iffectively.
but all credit must go to the director of this wonderful wonderful tv series.
The orginial series ran from 1972 to 1975. I had just started to study martial arts when this show came out so it had something special that drew me in. Not so much the martial arts but more important the flashback scenes. It was & still is the only show had any kind of message of wisdom even if it was on a basic level.
Bruce Lee coundn't have pulled off the part as his intense nature was not suited for the role of a humble monk. David Carradine though not a martial artist did fit the part.
Much as I loved this series in the day, it sort of makes me wince to see how every single part of Caine's life was portrayed by obviously non-Asians. Carradine was good, though, I'll admit. Here ins one example of an update I would like to see, so long as Asians were cast for every level of his life, AND the name should seem at least a bit more Chinese!
For those saying Bruce Lee was too intense for this role are ignorant of the man. He was an actor and I'm quite sure he could come off as calm. The facts are that Hollywood of the 1960s and 1970s were not comfortable giving a starring role to an Asian man so they settled on David Carradine. This role was written for Bruce Lee but Holly wood was scared to go with him.
Who would think that the Caine of "KUNG FU" will end up dead as being a sexually perverted lonely man in a Bangkock hotel! All that ancient oriental wisdom taught to him in the Shaolin Temple really went to wasted, didn't it?!!!
As a young boy his was my first contact with real Spiritual wisdom, it's a classic series , I wish they would show it more so the kids today might get a chance to find something of true value in our currently desolate wasteland as far as spirituality goes.
It was clearly disrespectful to Asians not to have had Bruce Lee play the part he helped to create although David did do a good job. I love the temple scenes with Master Po. RIP Bruce Lee and David Carradine
@Psikonort I don't know how you can make a broad assumption about what I know or don't know from one comment I made.
I what I do comprehend that that "Kung Fu" is Bruce Lee's brainchild and was developing it in the beginning. That is a fact.
My issue is with the choices the producers made. They chose a man who knew nothing of Kung Fu (physically nor philosophically) before this show and was arguably considerably less talented than Bruce Lee. That is my issue with this show.
@Psikonort I apologise my friend, you are right, It was Bruce Lees Brainchild and I recall it was important to him to include the Full Picture and relay the Philosophical & Spiritual roots that are an inherent part of Kung Fu & as such why Mr Lea wanted to include them in the series. I mistook you for being either a race obsessive or Martial Arts thug ; As you rightly say alot to assume on one statement. I think DK's acting relayed the Buddhist nature of the Character really well though
Sad Bruce got booted from this role & he was told early it was his! Bruce Lee would have been DYNAMIC as the lead, making better fighting sequences as a true martial artist being AUTHENTIC for the role. Asians hardly ever get a chance in American TV or Movies, especially in this early racial phobic era of the 70's! Like Ibringthetruth1 says "it's money and fear that people would not watch Bruce therefor the white guy". BUT FALSE..Bruce should have got the role & believe would have been GREAT!
That would suck to have like eight spears chucked at you! And that old blind dude kicks ass! "Beware the grasshopper! When you are asleep, it will crawl onto your face, and barf up that icky brown stuff on your cheek!" So sorry, master fu! I never did like the nephew of the emporer, anyway! "Go to the US. I have a cousin in San Francisco who has a laundry. You will work there, and solve white folks problems by kicking ASS!"
David Carradine was the only person that was right for this part. Bruce Lee couldn't have done the part justice. His personality by nature was way too intense to play the part of Caine. @CelticCaine If you think Bruce lee would have been too intense for basically what was HIS own show....watch Bruce Lee's performance in Longstreet. Or the unused opening in Enter the Dragon. And I don't mean just the martial arts scenes. Bruce Lee had a deeper understanding of the spirituality of Taoism and Kung Fu than the entire writing staff that worked on this show.
People who think Bruce Lee was just about punches and kicks probably have never read anything written by Bruce Lee.
@CelticCaine: Amazing. The amount you are wrong is in direct proportion to the amount that you are disrespectful. David Carradine won this role due to discrimination and racism. This show was Bruce Lee's creation, and Carradine wouldn't have had a part to play if Bruce Lee had not created it.
Bruce Lee would've been able to play the character he created.
@CelticCaine Shows how good an actor Dave was. You don´t need a Kung Fu expert (Bruce Lee) to play a Kung Fu master. Same as you don´t need the real superman to play superman...just a good actor.
@CelticCaine much respect to caradine, but Lee wasn't right for the part? HE INVENTED THE PART AND THE WHOLE SHOW!!!! I never liked this show. i always wondered why it was a boring white guy. My dad used to love this and made me watch it. i always fell asleep cuz it was almost as boring as star trek next generation. if it was lee it would have kicked major ass! racist media sucks
@CelticCaine PLEASE!!!! Bruce Lee created the part for himself, racist a_ _ Hollywood denied US a side of Master Lee we'll never know. Bruce succeeded at everything he touched, Kung Fu would have been NO DIFFERENT. Bruce's EVERLASTING BRILLIANCE would have touch us in a different way, his legacy story would have different chapters, but at the end of the story, Bruce Lee still will be the GREATEST MARTIAL ARTIST EVER KNOWN.
@CelticCaine I so disagree with this. This is the same false mentality that the producers had. Bruce was an actor. He played a role that he didnt even do martial arts but got beat up so saying that he was too intense doesnt hold water. The west wasnt ready for an Asian hero. David was horrid in this role. Horrible fight scenes and everything. Ugh!
Who cares if Bruce Lee was not ask to play this part, a white man as David Caradine made the story more interesting. He was good in this television show and I loved watching it when I was young back then. Boy do I feel old right now, getting close to 50!
@patsaxon i never missed an episode of kung fu . i am also 50 yo this year . i learned a lot form this show. most of all it was just a really good show . today's TV shows are just garbage
Me and my roommates never missed an episode of Kung fu in our college dorm back in '72. Good clean horsing around with lots of empty pizza boxes after the show.
I hate when people uselessly spam these videos with their dislike for Carradine. Okay, maybe he wasn't the best martial artist, and maybe he had some personal problems, but the show was good nonetheless. If you don't like it then don't watch it.
What are you talking about he didn't know any martial arts and the show kung fu it was bruce lee's Idea he was very pissed off when he found out they stole his idea.
I Wonder if "Hollywood Studios".....actually kept their promise with Bruce Lee and had him star in this show...how much more of a success would this show would have been....
Racism :( they didnt want a chinaman to star in their show it would not have been "good for bussines at the time". If they did pick bruce lee instead this would still be playing on many channels today.
Yeah, it probably would've had a better impact but it would've done nothing for Bruce Lee's vision of martial arts movies. He would've been solely concentrated on this.
Fuck man ,where does the time go ? I was a kid when all this shit was new...almost like the 80's and 90's didn't even exist... and here I am 45 in 2009. what is 45 supposed to feel like ?
BULLSHIT! He was a shitty actor and an even shittier "martial artist." He beat out Bruce Lee for his rightful role just bc he was a white-boy, in a racist world plain and simple! Then he died his white-boy depraved, faggot death in stockings and high-heels! Truth fucks your head up don't it? FUCK D. Carradine & anyone who thinks he was great! Long live the Master Bruce LEE! FUCK YOU!
Clumsy-ass awkward prick perpetrating the fraud! No acting skills--no physical skills, no martial arts skills--& he died like the faggot he was! Caucazoid shit! Truth hurts! Now a black man will at last, at least try to fix what you devils did to the world, much to your chagrine! Truth hurts don't it? Now talk your shit, it won't change TRUTH!
I live in the neighborhood, I had Sex with your Mom in my Garage. You've been in my Garage, hey a few beers and your Mom becomes a Freak, non-stop Sexual Action!
Go for it if you're that desperate---meanwhile, I've had both your little sisters. Nothing like an 18 year old and a 19 year old at the same time! Stupid fuck. Carradine could not act, do martial arts choreography, much less real martial arts, plus he was a drunk-ass, drug-addict cheater, liar, and pervert. All FACTS. Yet ppl praise him bc of programming and nostalgia. Ppl are stupid sheep who do what they're told by the TEEVEE. And you're the sheep's asshole. Rate away-Truth still won't change!
You're girlfriend is SWEET, she LOVES my Bench press, she lays on it BUCK Naked legs in the air, I Drill her Non-Stop for 20minutes. I would probably last Longer but the way she Grabs my Ass, I Have to Cum in her FACE..
You mean my ex-girlfriend? Boy did she gain weight after I left her--she was so hot bf I dumped her. It makes sense you take my fat-slob sloppy seconds. You fucked her for 20 min? Damn, I don't know what's more pathetic-fucking a fat slob or lasting only 20. When she was a ten I wrecked that shit for hours. Guess your little wee-wee can't hack it. Figures-you're a fag anyway so just come out of the closet fun-boy. Meanwhile I'll move on to your niece, not a bad piece of white trash to hump & dump
Pretty Good. There is no doubt in my mind that you've gotten your ASS Kicked too many times to count. You are an INTERNET TOUGH Guy. I live in NEW YORK...any time your in town / or live in the area lets meet. You can look straight into my Face and call me Fag / Fun-Boy. Doing it on the internet is pathetic. White Trash? I'm Black Bad MotheRFucker. Lets meet... YOUTUBE WARRIOR...
LOL looks like the troll got riled up--touched a chord? LOL. "Let's meet..." LOL yeah right, like you'll be there--a fucking 12 year old fat punk talking shit. Look at your troll baits that started it all & it's enough to know you're just a piece of shit that got OWNED at your own game! Now cry yourself to sleep in your momma's basement in the fetal position bitch. And STFU.
@Ibringthetruth1 At that time Kun fu was a Chinese art form, so looking at it in reverse, if the white was pitching a Karate movie or Tv series in china maybe he would have gotten the role. I do understand your perspective and agree with you. although I feel not having Bruce Lee star in HIS Tv series was OUR LOSS. =(
Go onto googles Kung Fu series guide which sets out some of the quotes from each episode. It is simply mind blowing to understand the philosophy the series is based on.
No Gemma, he mean't it in simpler terms, Each new day something new to the tongue and something new to the touch..please no rudeness..that is too easy to be...
When dear David was living in our beloved Toronto,Canada whilst shooting the Legend Continues,no matter how lame it was,he knew that....He told us one thing I will share with my Y.T. friends.David said ...'Always touch a new surface each day of your life, experience its texture and always, always taste a new flavor, each day of your life'.
From my understanding alot of it was adapted from the sacred book call Tao Te Ching. Why don't you give it a read and apply it and find it for yourself if it works or not. You don't want to at least experiment with it to see.
This brings me back to when I was a young child. My mother and I would always watch Kung Fu together and it was something I looked forward to. RIP David.
It is a damn shame David Carradine has passed away. Yet another great actor we have lost, but at least we have his films to remember him by. May he rest in peace, an his spirit live on forever.
Bruce Lee lost out to Carradine for the role...36 years later they can now both talk about the thing in peace. One was the real deal the other an actor...respect to both.
I can't tell you how many times I've cited the philosophical bits from this show in my office to make a point to my bemused staff.
All you need to know is right there, Master Po and Master Han.
Amazing for a prime time network show in USA to be able to do something that had such meaning. The beginning bit is so evocative walking across the desert alone.

I hate when people uselessly spam these videos with their dislike for Carradine. Okay, maybe he wasn't the best martial artist, and maybe he had some personal problems, but the show was good nonetheless. If you don't like it then don't watch it.
WatashiWaMono 2 years ago 3
What are you talking about he didn't know any martial arts and the show kung fu it was bruce lee's Idea he was very pissed off when he found out they stole his idea.

I Wonder if "Hollywood Studios".....actually kept their promise with Bruce Lee and had him star in this show...how much more of a success would this show would have been....

Racism :( they didnt want a chinaman to star in their show it would not have been "good for bussines at the time". If they did pick bruce lee instead this would still be playing on many channels today.
skeecats 2 years ago
@skeecats
Racism or dumb audience that can't relate to an Asian.
It's demographic programming. It's common.
Bruce lee would have made it really great.
Ibringthetruth1 2 years ago
Yeah, it probably would've had a better impact but it would've done nothing for Bruce Lee's vision of martial arts movies. He would've been solely concentrated on this.
butterp7 2 years ago
If they had done that, I guess the show would have been less successful in the US but more successful internationally.
cancerbero8 2 years ago
Prob not a success at all because of the enormous amounts of racism that caused him to be dropped from the show in the first place.

FUCK YOU!
FUCK YOU!

Yet ppl praise him bc of programming and nostalgia. Ppl are stupid sheep who do what they're told by the TEEVEE. And you're the sheep's asshole. Rate away-Truth still won't change!

We agree partially.
It was not done to get the Asian guy.
It's money and fear that people wouldn't watch Bruce therefore the white guy.
Lets look at it in reverse, would a white be considered for a Kunfu role in a chinese martial arts movie or Tv series.
Probably not. These producers are killing themselves because Bruce Lee became a megastar and the DVD sales would have been great. Their LOSS.
Lesson learned.

Lies - pretty made lies.
I loved the movie when I was a teenager, and it inpired me to make martial arts by myself, that's the good effect.
But all in all - just HOLLYWOOD-LIES, not a really help for real life! You're no hero, David.

Lee was a great Martial artist..perhaps the best of all time, but not a marginal actor at best, and probably would not have passed a screen test here.
But a great idea, nonetheless.
Show got ruined by too many idiots needing to see more and more violence...must be NRA Members...

RIP David.
