pure horsepower and torque, period. I saw a tractor pull years ago and 1 tractor had a WWII aircraft v-12 engine on it. The low toned roar was incredible, it easily outpulled tractors with 4 big block v-8's.
Food for thought... How do the carburation system on these planes work? I was just thinking of how car carbs work, then came to realize that there can't be a bowl or float on these, less they flood the carb when they do a dive and/or flip. Any thoughts?
Early versions of the Merlin engine had a carburator, similar to car engines, so in a steep dive or negatige G maneuver the engine would stop or sputter due to fuel starvation. I think this was true with the Spit Mk I. Then they installed Fuel Injection and then the problem was solved. The version of this video looks like a Mk V or Mk IX, I might be wrong, but I think most Merlin engines flying today are fuel injected.
I'm no Merlin engine expert , but Wikipedia says the first Pressure Carburator was installed in 1943. A pressure carburator I understand was an early form of fuel injection as we know it foday.
@locowil you are correct, however it was quite some time before they were fitted with fuel injection. A spitfire had to flip upside down as they entered a dive.
the engine block, heads, intake for fuel system, will last forever, the only parts that need replaced would be rods, bearings, rings and pistons if they are too worn, the fuel lines and magnetos and all the gaskets also need replacing every couple of years, along with the oil pumps, there are many me-109's in germany that still have the original engines but have been totally rebuilt and work better than they did 65 years ago, the sound of a db 601 or 605 is awe inspiring
i dont class skylines, bimmers, rx7 or anything like that as rice.
rice are 4 bangers, with magnets attached so they can drive through halfords and come out with every peice of shit under the sun attached to them, oh and dont forget their half finished body kits and psi gauge's wired up to the rev counter :P

That might not be able to pull a rabbit out of a hat but the Merlin can certainly make a magical sound.

The Griffon was awsome but nothing can beat the sound of a Merlin. Its the finest engine ever made!

Only problem with that theory is that the bearcat never saw action.
axewolfjack 1 year ago 2
@axewolfjack i belive the bearcat may of saw action in korea but the french used it in the war in Vietnam in the 50s i may be wrong
SgtGrant23 1 year ago
Wrong. Spitfire-Mosquito, P-47, P-38- P-40, F-4U, F-6F, F-4F, Me-109, Fw-190 are the best fighters. The mustang blows. =)

@axewolfjack The F8F Bearcat was the best hands down. Nothing could turn with it, or out climb it

The prop seems very slow
updougdown 2 years ago
That's an illusion created by the framerate of the camera.
I've seen some clips here where it seemed the prop wasn't rotating at all. It's really wierd :P but perfectly normal

an in-line is like a 2 stroke = very fast, but not a lot of torque.
however, a radial is like a 4 stroke = lots of power and torque.
i might be a little wrong, but thats my guess.

You're so right buddy. Nothing comes close to Merlin V12s. Okay, only a few bi turbo diesel engines from tanks like the Leopard 2 sound equal.

I figured that newer ones had fuel injection to counter that. Thank you for that. When was fuel injection first put on the planes, do you know?

which was taken from me-109 technology * DB-601-605, direct injection , people that do not know this think it is something new

what`s the difference? Who do you "say", to start a airplane propeler?
nomad1545 3 years ago
propellers are engaged with the crankshaft with no clutch between, you would move your hand in a vertical circle
