Thats a very sweet-sounding guitar! What the heck is it? BTW, this lesson and your playing is very, very good and so wonderfully soulful.. and helpful! Thank you for posting! :-)
DUDE BEST LESSONS EVER!! seriously you get what blues soloing should be man you are a legend in lesson giving! I learned so much on just this video and I am quite advanced
very usefull! I can play anything I want but I really have troubles with improvisation and even Paul Gilbert lessons don't help at all :D so thank you very much!
dude i cant believe it ive been looking for a good vid on phrasing for so long and this one was very helpful that whole call and response and the martin luther king thing really helped man
wow that Martin Luther King thing was brilliant, never thought of it that way! For others who didnt really proccess that, watch from 1:00 to 2:00, its a VERY important thing to note.
Just wanted to add that Clapton is an absolute master at effective phrasing, especially on his work with Cream.
And the call and response concept is really vital. Many other musicians use the concept as well. For example, Bill Bruford (drummer) uses it all the time in his playing.
Been playing blues guitar for 10 years and these are the best lessons hands down, nothing comes close. The way he explains things so clearly is extraordinary.
that was really good and helpful..ive realized that the quicker people become aware of the concept of phrasing the easier it is to pick it up...before it was just ah so this is the key we're in so ill just play this scale up and down...thanks again!
well done man, your videos are excellent. i'd recommend this style of learning over "classical" lessons any day. by the way, can you say where you get these nice backing tracks?
Do you ever use volume swells? I use them sometimes. I don't want to be a Roy Buchanan copycat. But you should do a short lesson showing people how to effectively use them.
Stevie awed us. You are showing us how! As a bass, rhythm guitar and harp player, I now feel like I may actually learn to play lead guitar. Thanks so much for the youtube stuff!
ever since i started watching your vids i CANNOT put the guitar down. thanks for sharing your expertise and im looking forward to buying some of your dvds. keep rocking GUITAR GOD
These four lessons are by far the best i've ever seen. I see now that this stuff is just as, if not more important than memorizing licks and phrases. You've really given my playing a huge boost. 1000's of dollars worth of dvd's wouldn't teach as much as you have. Paying for your lessons is certainly worth it. Thanks a lot.
Could you do a more detailed lesson on the rake technique? It's very tricky to do correctly, because many harmonics ring and make it sound like a mess.
On a positive note this was VERY helpful, and I really hope you continue with this type of lesson. On a negative, that bad example sounds a bit too familiar to me-if you know what I mean.Guess I need a bit more practicing.
I should have made it more clear that I wasn't trying to say that that lick sounded entirely bad, it was just that I wasn't thinking about if it fit, I was just playing it because I knew it. That's what I'm trying to get across. Didn't mean to imply that people who play that lick sound bad, because it's a good lick, when used in the right context :)
Haha the "bad" example of phrasing sounds like my playing. Thanks for the awesome lesson. I really liked your analogies. I live about 30 minutes away from the "Galloping Gertie", which is the old Tacoma Narrows Bridge I think you were talking about when you described the principle of resonance. Small world!
That's the one! I couldn't remember the name of it until you mentioned it. It's a great example of that resonant frequency concept. Although, one usually hopes that your song doesn't fall apart like the bridge did......
lol speaking of songs falling apart, do you have any recommendations for good resources (books, videos, etc) going into more detail about utilizing chord tones within a solo? Thanks again!
