  • Thats a very sweet-sounding guitar! What the heck is it? BTW, this lesson and your playing is very, very good and so wonderfully soulful.. and helpful! Thank you for posting! :-)

  • Exactly what I've been looking for! :D Thanks man!

  • Awesome video man helped me sooo much!

  • What key is the backing track in? Also is this just a I-IV-V progression?

  • The non musical explanation was extremely powerfull! What a great view on it!

  • Man this is hard!

  • DUDE BEST LESSONS EVER!! seriously you get what blues soloing should be man you are a legend in lesson giving! I learned so much on just this video and I am quite advanced

  • great stuff

  • great vid man, very informative

  • that was amazingly helpful

i understand now why some licks sound rubbish in, and why my impovising sucks sometimes :D

  • very usefull! I can play anything I want but I really have troubles with improvisation and even Paul Gilbert lessons don't help at all :D so thank you very much!

  • call and response tool = solid effing gold!! thanks a lot. PS everyone go watch me shred! newest vid = The Dancing Ghost. thanks.

  • dude i cant believe it ive been looking for a good vid on phrasing for so long and this one was very helpful that whole call and response and the martin luther king thing really helped man

  • wow that Martin Luther King thing was brilliant, never thought of it that way! For others who didnt really proccess that, watch from 1:00 to 2:00, its a VERY important thing to note.

  • i like things that sound bad haha

  • great video, thanks

  • thnx man i am actually stuck on non phrasing thing :P trying to get out of it..

  • mate thanks for everything...

i want to meet you one day...and shake...your....hand...

    and maybe...buy you a beer... :P

    ...or maybe..not...(i'm only 16)

    haha....

  • Well man if you won't buy him one then I will, and I'll get two, one for him from you and one from me haha. Legendary guitarist.

  • good thinking...man ;)

    i'll owe you one....

  • I enjoy a good stout :)

  • hahaha....sure thing...

thanks for the lesson once again....

  • Thanks for everything......really appreciate it

im just 13 years old but you open a new door for me playing guitar..... thanks!

  • It's really nice of you to help us all out. You really make that backing track sound GREAT! Where did you get it?

  • Just wanted to add that Clapton is an absolute master at effective phrasing, especially on his work with Cream.

And the call and response concept is really vital. Many other musicians use the concept as well. For example, Bill Bruford (drummer) uses it all the time in his playing.

  • Been playing blues guitar for 10 years and these are the best lessons hands down, nothing comes close. The way he explains things so clearly is extraordinary.

    Thanks!

  • that was really good and helpful..ive realized that the quicker people become aware of the concept of phrasing the easier it is to pick it up...before it was just ah so this is the key we're in so ill just play this scale up and down...thanks again!

  • well done man, your videos are excellent. i'd recommend this style of learning over "classical" lessons any day. by the way, can you say where you get these nice backing tracks?

  • Do you ever use volume swells? I use them sometimes. I don't want to be a Roy Buchanan copycat. But you should do a short lesson showing people how to effectively use them.

  • Stevie awed us. You are showing us how! As a bass, rhythm guitar and harp player, I now feel like I may actually learn to play lead guitar. Thanks so much for the youtube stuff!

  • thank you so much. that was awosome i cant tell you how much i appriciate these free lessons.

  • Could you please provide a backtracking so we can practice and appreciate this whole lesson?

    :)

  • What kind of Guitar is that?

  • ever since i started watching your vids i CANNOT put the guitar down. thanks for sharing your expertise and im looking forward to buying some of your dvds. keep rocking GUITAR GOD

  • I just learned more about playing guitar and improvising in those 8 minutes than I've ever learned before.

  • how did you get sooo good?

  • I'm thinking about doing a free series next called "How I learned to play guitar"

  • Please do! Would be greatly appreciated!

  • that would bad ass.

  • Great job on this vid Anthony!.......That's what I call cool instruction!.......oops!...deleted my previous comment because I called you Steve.

  • Comment removed

  • Great tuition , Them blues boxes have really helped me out ;thanks. You look like a young Eric Clapton :)

  • I get that sometimes. Him and Tom Greene.

  • Nice.

  • Great!

  • bravo!

  • Way to break it down Anthony. Never fails

  • These four lessons are by far the best i've ever seen. I see now that this stuff is just as, if not more important than memorizing licks and phrases. You've really given my playing a huge boost. 1000's of dollars worth of dvd's wouldn't teach as much as you have. Paying for your lessons is certainly worth it. Thanks a lot.

  • Thanks for the kind words.

  • your lessons are the best ive seen . i still cant play lead but i am trying . i enjoy watching , thanks for taking the time to show us.

  • We were all "trying" at one point or another. Can't get to 'doing' without 'trying' :)

  • Could you do a more detailed lesson on the rake technique? It's very tricky to do correctly, because many harmonics ring and make it sound like a mess.

  • This IS playing with soul!

  • i watched that same bridge video in my fluid mechanics class!!!!!

  • Soul playing man. That John Mayer feel is so sweet on Guitar, please more of these lessons. :)

Thank you for helping people that want to be as good as you!!

  • Always worth watching, particularly if you are fairly new to playing.

  • Tacoma bridge?

  • you are awesome i have been watchin your lessons for like a year now and... damn.

  • Your lessons are excellent, thanks very much for doing this!

  • On a positive note this was VERY helpful, and I really hope you continue with this type of lesson. On a negative, that bad example sounds a bit too familiar to me-if you know what I mean.Guess I need a bit more practicing.

  • I should have made it more clear that I wasn't trying to say that that lick sounded entirely bad, it was just that I wasn't thinking about if it fit, I was just playing it because I knew it. That's what I'm trying to get across. Didn't mean to imply that people who play that lick sound bad, because it's a good lick, when used in the right context :)

  • Haha the "bad" example of phrasing sounds like my playing. Thanks for the awesome lesson. I really liked your analogies. I live about 30 minutes away from the "Galloping Gertie", which is the old Tacoma Narrows Bridge I think you were talking about when you described the principle of resonance. Small world!

  • That's the one! I couldn't remember the name of it until you mentioned it. It's a great example of that resonant frequency concept. Although, one usually hopes that your song doesn't fall apart like the bridge did......

  • lol speaking of songs falling apart, do you have any recommendations for good resources (books, videos, etc) going into more detail about utilizing chord tones within a solo? Thanks again!

  • I never had any books or anything so I wouldn't know what to recommend.

  • you have amazing feel!!!

    great licks!!
