  • Just remember the style cooley and these other theory built players use can be a trap. They don't tend to have any soul and focus on speed and extravagance. Cooley's playing is fast and impressive but his composing isn't artistic/emotive.

I do a bit of broad reach shapes but they aren't my primary focus. Just a tip though. practice them forward legato the most and on the lower frets. Just doing a roll on the 6th on 1,3,5 will build the skill for this technique faster.

  • @JonDeth Yeah I know I only use this exercise to get my fingers and picking working in synchronicity I would like to think that my composition have a lot more soul and don't just depend on playing fast licks

  • @callamanster It's definitely a great exercise based on a grand technique but I found if you're not giving lessons daily, working in the studio, playing with bands etc then you better be willing to practice them a couple hours everyday in your leisure as they require constant upkeep. I can avoid my guitar for a couple weeks, suddenly practice for 2-3 days and defeat the speed of guys like cooley no problem.

Getting the broad finger spread at a couple days notice though, no way!

  • @JonDeth Yeah I know what you mean, I dotn usually practise licks though as I find it kind of boring I usually just learn songs from dream theater and protest the ero and stuff to expand my overall playing and give me new concepts to incorporate into my own playing, thanks for the feedback though man I appreciate it

  • @callamanster you took the time to learn Megadeth, that wins you my respect lol.

That's more the style I play, a blend of blues, jazz and classic metal. It's faster but the constant shifts don't have the flow like the neo metal sweeps ala Cooley and such so people get wrapped up in what they think is faster and more extravagant while ignoring what is more talent derived.

Obviously composing tunes like Megadeth is FAR more consuming.

  • @callamanster Just so you guys know people can show emotion through any style they want to whether it be shred, blues or even pop for god sakes, (i mean no disrespect at all in saying this your both great guitarists) if you think that playing fast and complex runs all the time in the effort of making a song shuts out any possibility of artisism and emotion from the guitar players resumé than you obviously have a lot more learning to do

  • @JonDeth ha

if your practicing only a couple hours a day

    and go weeks without playinngg

you sound like your full of shit man

    why dont you go play

you better back that talk up with a demo

  • @JonDeth you need to look for rusty cooley goofing off during lesson

  • @JBDeville yeah I never took him for a stuffy white collar musician and teacher. His internet legend and followers sure did become a bit much though! lol

  • You said its tough for people who haven't been playing long... I've been playing for 2 years and I can play this almost as fast a you!!! :D. Just kidding Call, you pwn me.

  • Where abouts in Dublin would I have to go for said lessons?

  • @MrFoley100 dun laoghaire/glenageary area

  • @callamanster Right. So if you are still doin lessons I'd love to be thought by you.

  • boring, string skip and use the octaves instead,

  • You need to pad the springs at the rear trem cavity. This is causing some large resonance bleed at 1:03 - 1:05

Wrap a pice of soft cloth interlacing the springs twice over and staple it in place.

Less distortion by the way, your notes will have much more definition.

Try to apply your playing to scalar patterns and perhaps layer an extra fifth to each leading note with your right hand, also mix up the patterns to keep the passage fresh sounding. Try layering the accents.

    Have fun :)

  • GARGOYLE LICK!!!

  • nice vid, I might use that as my warmup. it works with different speeds so I can build up.

could you maybe do a lesson on "canon rock" or play your variation of it?

  • wich amp do you use

    NICE

  • Hey could you do a lesson over stuff like Children of Bodom like their solos because i have a hard time doing some of them like Are You Dead Yet but you did a good job on that one

  • this sounds alot like something heafy would do but keep it up

  • how do you find that stretch when you're standing up?

  • Hey, if no one else likes this kinda stuff kepp doing it for my sake. I have never been able to play anything close to that till now. Thanks for the pointers. Keep the lessons coming.

  • nice work man, you should keep doin the lesson vids

  • ,\../ FK YEAH

  • whats this about Trivium going back to Drop D

BTW i think this would have sounded cooler if you kept it in key, sounds a bit chromatic. Then people can use it in their solos etc

  • so simple, yet soooo awesome sounding

  • this is crazy good but i got one question wat kind of effect do you use to get your high notes so distorted

  • keep doing these lessons!

  • That was awsome and will deff help me with big stretches. You should keep making these. and could you make one on tapping thats like one thing I suck at the most.

  • thats a pritty cool lick you got going there callan i just tryed it finding it hard because i have extreamly small hands :L and is sprained my wrist on my right hand so im finding it hard to do .. Hopefully ill get it :)

  • Ah just work at it, i havent got particularly long fingers, neither did dimebag and a good few others just gotta get use to it

  • yeah i will but my wrist is fucked :L but yeah maybe next time could you do one on sweep picking? because i love your sweeps :L and i just abou have most sweeps nailed.. well ones like hangar 18 and lepper mesiah but yours look harder so if you could do one next time that would be awesome :) cheers dude

  • Will do man ;)

  • thanks dude :D

  • NicEE

  • your lick is similar to dimebag's solo on the song domination by pantera. the second part. the frets are the same but the pattern is differnt. anyways cool stuff.

  • Great innitiative with the lessons :] One thing though, I can barely hear what you're sayin, if at times at all, and the volume wont go any higher.

Sounds like a nice warmup. I think I remember seeying Matt Heafy play that or simmilar somewhere on youtube.

  • yeah will try sort that out for next time, dont think Matt has done one like this, i wrote this lick myself, but he may of done one similar its jsut good for the stretches and picking

  • nice...
