Lets be honest though, this version sucks ass, it sounds like its been done with rolf harris on stylophone... the point of NGD is that is magestic and symphonic, huge in its scope and perfect in its arrangement.... this sounds like the berverly hills cop version!!!
@casinodelonge Very true. I think the real reason for their move to a more commercial sound post NGD was that they struggled to recreate live largely studio written songs from Empires & Dance, Sons and Fascination and NGD itself. It was always a great experience seeing them live when showcasing those albums, but the recorded versions of those live sets betrayed a very weak and threadbare production. It begs the question how much of the studio sound was their's as opposed to the producer's?
The zenith before it all went awfully wrong. You can hear the clues here of the horrors that lay ahead. But for a few moments they were the Best Band In The World. Kind of like Suede, but with genius synth sounds.
Sorry, I'm just kidding - Belfast Child is way better than this flabby, self-indulgent bilge. What on earth was I thinking?
When I went away to college, one of my first evenings there, a group of friends and I went to dance in the middle of the campus and this song was pumping out of the huge sound system. Knowing what I know now, I wish I could go back to that point and live it all over again! College in the middle late 80's was fantastic!!
what do you mean "were a great band".........seen them in dublin a couple of weeks ago and they were alive & kicking..........they live and breathe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Without question the New Gold Dream(81-82-83) was their best album by far...I remember when the vinyl album came out (in US) the vinyl was in the orange color. After many parties I had to get new one. But this around the vinyl was in the regular black color.
Also the earlier albums were the top of the crop...
Yeah Jim when he was a kraut rock liberal was cool. Then he went all bigoted Celtic FC on us all like other closet CFC celebrities. After that the end was not long. Great band for a while though.
There are better versions of this on 'you tube' yet this has a lot more views. Not sure why. Ah yes, perhaps coz they r younger in this vid n therefore are deemed 2 b 'cooler' looking ie. Jim has black hair and is thinner. Nah, this version is too lanquid and lacks the passion and energy of later versions. It's also too minimalist and lacks richness of sound.

Ah the old Oxford Road Show, what a programme that was shame they haven't had the sense to release some of the artists performances on DVD.
