  • they need to get this in the studio before its too late

  • I've always enjoyed how the Irish performers pull together to do concerts and other performances. They don't seem to have the huge egos so often seen in the entertainment world. That multi-celebrity concert for Ronnie Drew was incredible. One more reason to love Irish music!!!

  • over 1 million whoooo deserves it!!!!

  • you should google singer songwriter John Hutchinson - Fallen Angels - Irish Grandmother- Austrian mother - Father fought at Arnhem - disowned by family when he left home as a kid - when asked about his parentage he said - in war films as a kid I could take anyside - we always won - German - English- Irish- Then decided I didnt give a shit who won - cos the common folk always lost x

  • MEAKD !!! you obviously dont know ANYTHING about my Country , it's history, much less it's muscians, you my friend, would be hung from the nearest lamp-post to speak that way about Christy Moore if u were in Ireland ! What an ignorant idiot u truly r regarding Ireland ****---

  • Gaybo chiming in with a load of yo's at the end, I forgot he liked to do that a lot, I don't miss him though.

  • old shane hasnt a bar in his grate :L

  • Fucking makes me proud to be Irish, one of the lucky ones born.

  • I want to write something clever and profound, but all I can think of when I hear this song is the image of my grandfather being taken away to castlebar hospital in an ambulance. I was on holiday in Mayo when I was young with my family. It was the last time my grandfather saw his homestead and his family. I have never seen someone so humble and frightened and aware of their own fate.

  • Great song, beautiful xxxxx

  • moore is such a Gobshite

  • trev hahaha

  • I'd love to sit with Shane in some old fashion pub with an open fire and have a good talk with him :)

  • I'm back listening to this. It is my favorite version of this song, I just love the balance between Christy Moore's voice and Shane McGowan's. Love this!

  • Great song

  • Shane McGowan sang at my uncles funeral as the coffin went out of the house... it was a very beautiful moment

  • Where does the respect for Shane McGowan come from from great traditional musicians like Christy Moore? Or is this just sort of a publicity stunt?

  • @CrimsonEmpire Man, Shane McGowan is a great traditional musician, and his drink problem doesn't make him any less of one.

  • @CrimsonEmpire There was a time when Id have agreed with you but then I listened to Shane. He is pure poetry living the life of a poet. Read his Wiki.

  • @CrimsonEmpire what do you mean where does it come from? Its Shane McGowan!

  • song is a great thing... song can unite people put joy in peoples hearts make people able to love again and make people feel proud the world would be nothing without song you can sing your pain away through song and be happy through song.... and thats what ireland has done passed down its history from generation to generation through song

  • @Svargedorath Shane is English....

  • @Seaniemol40 try telling him that

  • @Svargedorath Your comments are a bit miss guided..

  • @STFCstoneroses holy shit, i didn't remember this comment of mine :D

heh, yes, it's "miss guided" indeed = )

  • @Svargedorath what about a scottish one, !! iam drunk,, !! fuck the pope !! and the queen !!! CUNTS !

  • @Svargedorath Behave.

  • @Svargedorath stop ya dribbling you knob

  • @Svargedorath dry up

  • @Svargedorath Up vote this guy!

  • @Svargedorath Mate, half of Britain has an Irish grandparent. They built the railways and worked in the factories and stayed. There is likely as more Irish blood in the UK than there is in the Republic. This simplistic, comic book and ignorant view of history what pisses other nations off about Americans. The Irish have had a huge influence on the UK. Duke of Wellington, perhaps the greatest British national hero, pure Irish.

To say the Brits hate the Irish, nonsense.

  • @TheEskimosPantry I have nothing against British people, my comment was just humorous, don't take it seriously. I respect Britain as much as Ireland, both countries have damn amazing history and past ..

...and one more, folk music, yeah great folk music = )

  • @Svargedorath Ahh ok, sorry I flew off the handle there a bit. I just find that the majority of divisive comments regarding the political situation in the UK and The Republic are made by Americans who have never been to either country and don't really understand the complexity of the issues involved. It puts me in mind of a story about Mickey Rouke walking down the Shankhill road and gettign his IRA tatoo out thinking the "Irish" would love it.

It is great music yeah. :)

  • @TheEskimosPantry Hahahaha someone actually done that

  • @TheEskimosPantry Well said Mucker

  • @Svargedorath shane macgowan is a fucking legend...had a bev with him once...he fell over...xx

  • @Svargedorath omg u are the best m8 ;) words of wisdom lol ;) well keep getting drunk with the rest of us :) and make sure its guinness lol ... and just enjoy life as best u can :) thats all we can do :) us irish :)

  • @Svargedorath

I love the Irish too, but I don't think that the British dislike him that much!

His biggest audience is from England; He can sell out a London gig faster than he can in his homeland, and has been an inspiration for many years to Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish musicians.

One British accent is Northern Irish, but is British so you hate it!?

I can only blame your state of mind for your "enthusiasm", but try and be more "informed" in future, yes?

  • @Svargedorath Great comment, legendary, Can't beat the guiness :)

  • @zerocool200200 heh :D cheers to you my friend ;)

  • @Svargedorath . I'm with you brother !

  • @Svargedorath you know one of the singers was born in London :)

  • Derryman here. I've just never got the hype around Shane McGowan's voice. Sure he can pen a good song, but if it was anyone else singing in the way he does they'd be crucified for ruining a beautiful song.

  • God bless fkn Shane!

  • @fecesonfoot yeah ok. off back to america with you. We're here to listen to a great song, not listen to a dimensia suffering, skitsofrenic, Dublin 4 idiot

  • @fecesonfoot youre retarded

  • next thursday YEOWW!!! cant wait :D

  • @fecesonfoot "cos your mammy is sucking my cock" i think you have just shown to the youtube community that not only are you a fuckin fool you have a terrible sense of humor and extremely immature. i can only guess at your age, 15 maybe.

  • @fecesonfoot you have some serious problems

  • Ireland unfree shall never be at peace!

  • @MrTonymccann1 neither will Ireland on Guinness lol

  • I remember seeing this live and by god i never forgot it. I found out later thats its an abbreviated version of the actual song. there is a few more verses.

  • You irish guys are the only ones wich can heal the broken soul of my people.

We got raped, misused, they bombed us to death for financial interests, they burned our culture they burned our love to our home, our fathers our woods.

They burned our Gods and Memories.

"They" are the same wich raped your land, your home and your freedom.

But you kept your culture, a thing wich connects every soul deeply. We lost it for ever. It`s so sad, i could cry.

a celt from the black forest

  • @AshtarKommando No "they" didn't it is still there just look deep enough within yourself and until you find it con soul yourself with real music. ;)

  • shut up gaybo u knobhead :P

  • Christy is outstanding but shane just "has it" even though he's drunk as f*** his voice is just *couldntfindwordtodescribeit*

  • WOW

  • up down!

  • i agree you can feel the XP points in Shanes' voice......

  • i love the fact that you can hear gay byrne goin mental for it at the end

  • @clawlesslawless

Sorry Clawless - This man was an talentless little poseur who pretended to go "mental" at the end of every song.

Thanks for uploading - great duo for a great song.

  • the smoking ban has prevented future great collaborations like this, shane needs his fag

  • @tyronegaa Just don't say fag to an American, they might think it's something else. LOL Typical homophobic Americans, LOL

  • two of the best voices chastamatic mad bastards on one stage. would love to see it

  • Shanes voice is like a million souls singing from a thousend years!!!

  • @reditch fact

  • @reditch wat a fantastic way of puttin it :) wel said. 2 of these are fuckin class together 2 :)

  • @reditch Probably the truest statement I've ever heard

  • Brings me back to when I was 15, and for the first time I went to an Irish pub (in Holland) just to have a nice evening without any expectations. From that moment I started to listen to irish music more often. And of course having more visits to irish pubs.

  • I keep coming back to this video. The only thing better would be if Damo were in it too!!!

  • Happy St Patrick's Day to all of you

  • Oh to have been in the audience that night, the energy and passion still comes through all these years later. It lifts to another level when Shane removes the sun glasses, Christy acknowledges this, and he picks up the intensity when he next comes in, but the final line has to one of the most passionate lines that ever left Shane's mouth. I sing along word for word, line by line every time I listen and watch this but I can never make the final line, it's just too hauntingly perfect. SM = Genius.

  • That is what ya call music

  • @redasho1 i don't like shanes style of singing it seems too affected and trashy whereas the dubliners have better versions

  • I am PROUND TO BE IRISH!

  • Offical queen visit to ireland, weve recieved an opology from the british government but not an ounce of regret from the queen.

  • @GBYRNE123 ??? huh?

  • 33 Brits have watched this video .......

  • @MrConeman now 34

  • @MrConeman

    hahahaah !

  • @MrConeman fact

  • @MrConeman who gives a shit still a classic

  • @MrConeman Brit singing this song, you mong.

  • @Jstand1 Considering Shane and Christy are both Irish....no.

  • @MrConeman Considering Shane was born in England. No.

  • @Jstand1 Considering Shane was born in England, to Irish parents, before moving back to Ireland. Yes.

  • @MrConeman Point proved. Potato cunt.

  • @Jstand1 I don't like potatoes actually. I don't know if Shane does, but it's pretty likely considering he's Irish.

  • @MrConeman He does indeed. Only mashed though. Not the traditional Irish way, pretty similar to himself really.

  • @Jstand1 I'm glad he's not famous for his food habits then, and famous for his very traditional Irish music. :)

  • @MrConeman Me too. Fucking genius. Can't hide the fact that he's British born though, probably wouldn't appreciate bellends like you making such comments either.

  • @Jstand1 I never denied that he was born in England though did I? In fact I pointed it out quite blatently, it doesn't stop him being Irish, and it doesn't stop him considering himself Irish. So no, he wouldn't appreciate bell ends like you telling him he's a Brit.

  • @MrConeman ...you are fucking twat man.. you have absolutely no idea what goes on in this country never mind know a good Irish song when you hear it...and you neednt bother your hole replying to this because i have no interest geting into a slaging match with a complete retard like yourself...

  • @MrIrishfreedom You're the fucking retard if you can't see that I said that in jest. I mean you are monumentally fucking thick. I am Irish born and raised so yes I do know what goes on in "this country" because I've lived in it for the past 22 years. Cull yourself.

  • @MrConeman Cull myself??? Idiot...

Tell me.. how could i know if you said something 'in jest' or not..

i dont know you or ever do want to,so if some rejected spawn of a

fucking inbred whore wants to write something one way and expect others

to understand he ment it 'in jest' well then you will have to expect to be taking up wrong sometimes..

  • @MrIrishfreedom Look up the meaning for Cull you moron.

And look, I can't be bothered arguing with you, I just can't. The fact remains however that you misread me, and jumped out of your seat like a fucking impatient child, it was your mistake not mine. Yes, I appreciate it can be very difficult to tell if someone is joking or being sarcastic when you read it online, it was a misunderstanding. Just don't go shouting someone out over something so fucking stupid, and you'll avoid things like this.

  • @Jstand1 if a dog is born in a stable it doesnt make it a horse you dumb ignorant bastard calling this a brit song you have to be british

  • @MrConeman Does this include me? LOL

  • @NipperM846 Only if you pushed dislike :P

  • Comment removed

  • I'm surprised that Christy remained on the wagon with Shane around?

  • I love absolutely anything Shane sings, but I'd never heard of Christy Moore. Wow--from California, too many miles from Spancil Hill & all of Ireland, damn...

  • @stjulienlepauvre

You never heard of Christy Moore. Hard to believe. Have a listen to his songs Ordinary Man and Missing You. They're classics.
