Go get a real education kids! My dad was an I.B.E.W electrician and I quit 2 years into my apprenticeship when I realized that I would never want to do this for the rest of my life. Way too much B.S. Well at least I didn't work for a non-union shop - those guys are just miserable for the rest of their lives.
i am a proud IBEW member, but i do have to disagree with them saying the ABC and IEC are poor apprenticeships. i went through IEC and my instruction was very good and in depth. first year was all basic theory, and residential applications. second year was trigonometry, print reading, in depth AC theory, third year was motor control and low voltage systems, and fourth year tied it all together with prep for the state journeyman exam (and plenty of code each year).
@Doug19752533 IBEW too. I volunteered one Christmas season for the hall. All they kept saying was " If the reporter talks to you, it's IBEW, IBEW". I never volunteered again. I do HFH volunteering, but I'll never wear an IBEW shirt. I do it because I have the time, and I have the skill, and someone needs my help. I won't do it to support the illusion that we can do no wrong, or the IBEW is the end all in electrical work. Shame my leaders can't understand this.
"I qualified for an interview and showed up nicely dressed, and received my "sorry, we chose other candidates" letter in the mail a few weeks later."
They detected your bad attitude at the interview. I'd work with a 18 yr old apprentice with a good attitude over a college grad with a bad attitude any day. Our job is not rocket science, we want good people in our union who are easy to get along with.
The training that is provided in the union is top notch,BUT If you are the best pipe bender you will always be installing pipe. The diveristy of ibew electrcicians leave allot to be desired. I've worked with electricians from union & non union. The training is only good when its applied. The best profesional is 1 that is able to excell at all aspects of the trade. From outlets,to 3000 amp gear,Generator installs to fire alarm systems. The more exposure to these systems makes a better tradesman.
@pjselec This is not true. I am an IBEW apprentice and our local is really into moving apprentices (and even journeymen when necessary) around to get them proper training on everything. I've heard of Journeymen getting sent back to the hall from jobsites for not being able to bend pipe, then getting sent right back with the employer told to teach them how to bend pipe effectively. Beats the hell out of "training" from scab contractors.
Maxrocks1-You need to read my 1st sentence in my comment. To the apprentice who is still learning the trade. I've been in the trade since 1982. I hold my journeyman's & Master electrical license. I've worked with union & non-union tradesman. I just want to say that we are all profesionals in the work we do. weather the tradesman is union or not. You should remember that! The electrical trade is very diverse. The more you know, the more interesting the work is. Thanks for getting into the trade.
I guess I'll decide how I feel about IBEW's hiring practices after I see whether I get selected as an apprentice this year. But the union job itself? Sounds like as good a deal as you can get.
i guess you are a low wage no benfit having scab who would like nothing more then to drag everyones conditions down so your boss can buy himself another house while you eat bologna you must love him very much i bet you would s his d you scab
Im just happy being a Union IBEW member, i like the people there , we dont do scumbags, i like having HUMAN RIGHTS and not dealing with corporate pieces of shit and SCABS. I hate scabs, especially organized scab crossovers, ROTATE YOUR SHOP RATS!!!!

I worked in a non union outfit for 4 years before being organized. The level of education is undescribable compared to the only work exp i got from non union shops.
@Blobsterss The "best apprenticeship on the planet" is with UA, not IBEW. In recent years, IBEW has been known to organize in a multitude of hoods and ex-convicts, which has severely depleted their talent pool. I was accepted to UA as a third-year HVAC fitter/mechanic apprentice based upon my prior education. Therefore, your "bad attitude" and "can not hack it" conjecture does not hold water.
I work for a corporation . . and they FUCK us over !.. they're laying us off and sending everything overseas ! .
Non Union people basically do the same shit ! . .they employee bottom of the barrell shit heads and pay them shit !
And there employees walk around with a bloated head thinking hey . .I got two weeks paid vacation , and basic health insurance . .BUT YOUR GETTING PAID SHIT
You're better off getting an engineering degree and designing the f*cking systems. At least you'll have a desk job and won't have to work with drug addicts all day.
Spoken like a man whose never had to work both and compare. Working with your hands beats the fuck out of a desk job any day. And with IBEW you make plenty of money doing it. I wish my factory's union were half this good.
@remmyjable Engineers are one of the most common jobs that are outsourced today. And a degree doesn't guarantee any specific job. IBEW members are drug tested regularly.
You'll never get into IBEW unless you're somebody's brother-in-law or a crackhead.
I have an AS in Electrical Technology, an AS in HVAC Technology, and I scored near perfect on the aptitude test. I qualified for an interview and showed up nicely dressed, and received my "sorry, we chose other candidates" letter in the mail a few weeks later.
You should see some of the tattooed dumbasses they let into IBEW. Labor unions will be an antiquity soon anyway.
