Oh man,I flew combat in Viet Nam, but always wonder what WW I would have been like.
Terrific video, got my right leg thumping! But anyone know who built these? I'm interested in an Airdrome Aeroplane DR 1 replica in the future, but can the Warner fit on it?
I'd like to know more about these replica planes, specifically what power plant do they use?. Unlike a WWII monoplane it would be fairly easy to build the airframe of a fighter like the Dr.1 since it is mostly wood and canvas, assuming one had the requisite woodworking skills, materials and plenty of time. But the engines! Obtaining an original Oberursel Ur.II 9-cylinder rotary engine (a clone of the French Le Rhône 9J) must be a real feat!
Sorry if this is an ignorant question, but isn't the swastika on the baby blue plane a mirror image of the swastika we know from Raiders of the Lost Ark and other German films/history books?
@timrichter9 The swastika is used either right-facing form in counterclockwise motion or its mirrored left-facing form in clockwise motion. Earliest evidence of swastika ornaments dates back to the Indus Valley Civilization of Ancient India. Swastikas have also been used in other ancient civilizationsd. It remains widely used in Indian religions. After a brief surge of popularity in Western culture, the counter clockwise swastika was adopted as a symbol of the German Nazi Party in 1920
@timrichter9 First of all none of the panes have a swastika on them, they have what is called a maltese cross which was the german imperial army air corps sign in WWI the german swastika was WWII under the nazi party
@t110d93 there were no nazis in the Great War, furthermore it was a symbol of good luck at this time. there was a hockey team in Canada in 1912 known as the swastikas, were they Nazis? also the U.S. 45th division wore a gold swastika on a red diamond as their patch they changed it in the late 30's for obvious reasons..... really tho... ppl can be so misinformed & prejudgemental. time to educate oneself.
@timrichter9 that's the difference between reality & fantasy, no nazis in the Great War, look it up.............here's your wake up call baby.............
Shame none have rotary engines, A private museum in Bethal PA. just put one in the air this spring, 100% full scale to prints with a rotary..... look under my name for Videos................... Great to see so many flying just the same, love the slow speed of these graceful swans
@Verdunveteran Great photos. I built a Fokker Eindecker E-III, the grandfather of the DR-1, about 40 years ago. It's in the process of being restored and will fly again some day.
When you consider how difficult those planes are to fly (let alone take-off and land), to see them in formation is breathtaking.

Wow! The video makes all of the reading Ive done on the Flying Circus go from black and white to color.
How different the world must have been when these state-of-the-art machines took to the air, almost 100 years ago.
Wonderful video, thanks for posting!

@enscroggs they are more than likely using Rotec Radial engines from Austraila. They come in 110hp and 150hp models.

"hi, my name is mmck523, and I can't be bothered to watch the entire video.
I just like telling other people that they are wrong, when in reality, it's ME !
Even though a swastika is clearly displayed on one of the Fokkers, I just tell
people they didn't see what they saw..just to screw with them. I aspire to high
government office, by the way..I think I have the "right stuff" for that. Politician
get to mindscrew people every day. I can hardly wait!

@timrichter9 That aircraft does have a swastika on it. I didn't think swastikas were used in WW1. I thought they were only after Hitler, in WW2

Just plain wonderful! Single inquiry though: Are the engines also a replica of the original?

@solverh No , they are mostly powered by more modern ( although still fairly old ) Warner radial engines .
